Syracuse basketball big man Dajuan Coleman rallies his teammates before the Orange played Villanova last season at the Carrier Dome

It is Official; Holy Cross Added to 2014-15 Schedule (PS; Ditota)

Add Holy Cross to the 2014-15 Syracuse men's basketball schedule.

The Orange will play Holy Cross in the Carrier Dome on Friday, Nov. 28. The Crusaders, who play in the same Patriot League as Colgate, went 20-14 overall last season and 12-6 in their conference. They beat Colgate twice, the second time by a single point, and lost games to North Carolina (62-54) and Michigan (88-66) as they prepared for their Patriot League opponents.

Holy Cross will return four starters this season. The Crusaders shot 35 percent as a team from the 3-point line last season and bring back its top two 3-point threats. Malcolm Miller shot 42 percent from the deep perimeter; Anthony Thompson shot 41 percent.

Coaches Say Adding Louisville Makes ACC the Top Basketball League (courier-journal.com; Bozich)

One early look at the next college basketball season, by CBSSports.com, shows four teams from the Atlantic Coast Conference ranked in the top 12 in the nation.

ESPN ups the ante, placing four ACC teams in its top eight. Mike DeCourcy of The Sporting News agrees – ranking Virginia eighth, Louisville seventh, North Carolina fifth and Duke fourth. No other league pushed more than one team in his pre-season top eight.

What do the ACC coaches who have been in Louisville this weekend at the AAU Nationals tournament think about the love that is only beginning to rage?

“Obviously with what coach (Rick) Pitino has done, what it will add, it will make this league unlike anything college basketball has seen,” Virginia coach Tony Bennett said.

Carmelo Anthony tears up when asked what he'll miss most, after his announcement that he would forgo the rest of his college career at Syracuse University. He said he would miss his teammates.

Melo on Return to New York Knicks: 'I Don't Care About the Money' (PS; Axe)

Former Syracuse University basketball star Carmelo Anthony says it was his desire to win and confidence in new Team President Phil Jackson that brought him back to the New York Knicks, not his pay check.

"I want to win. I don't care about the money," Anthony told ESPN.com. "I believe Phil will do what he has to do to take care of that."

Anthony signed a five-year deal worth $124 million with the Knicks earlier this month.

He told ESPN's Jeff Goodman that he had a hard time making his decision.

CJ Fair Rejects $200K Deal from European Team, What to Do Now? (PS; Waters)

So what happens to C.J. Fair now?

Fair fired his agent this week. Fair, the former Syracuse University forward, went undrafted in the NBA's draft last June. He signed on with the Dallas Mavericks' summer league team.

According to Fair's former agent, a few NBA teams were interested in bringing Fair into their pre-season training camps. But after Fair averaged just 4.0 points in five games in Las Vegas for the Mavericks, a guaranteed contract was not forthcoming.

Torrel Harris said Thursday that he had brought a $200,000 contract offer from a team in Europe to Fair.

Jo-Lonn Dunbar: Ramsn Have 'Clear Understanding' of What Happened in Brawl with Donte Greene (PS; Domin)

Jo-Lonn Dunbar said Friday that the St. Louis Rams have a "clear understanding" of what happened in his altercation with Donte Greene.

Dunbar and Greene were arrested last weekend for their roles in what police described as a "large-scale brawl" outside a Miami Beach nightclub. Dunbar, a Corcoran graduate, told the police he was "defending himself" from Greene and Greene's brother, D'Metrique. The altercation ended when Donte Greene, a former Syracuse University basketball player, was tasered in the rear end.

Tony Caridi Spends a Lifetime Calling the Mountaineers (statejournal.com; McCloud)

This year’s college freshmen have never heard another play-by-play announcer for West Virginia University. All of their lives, Tony Caridi has been calling Mountaineer football and men’s basketball games on the radio.

What’s remarkable is Caridi is still working at his first job out of college.

“That does not happen often in this business,” he said. “Typically a broadcaster hops around and goes to different markets as you climb the proverbial ladder. Aug. 3 will be 30 years I’ve been in West Virginia.”

Caridi graduated from Syracuse University in 1984 and got a news reporting job at WAJR in Clarksburg.

Another Tony Caridi graduated from SU in about 1973. He was a scholarship football player (tight end, as I recall) but upon diagnosis with hypoglycemia had to give it up. He was thus able to help my team win the SU intramural football championship. I think he went on to law school.
