Things I Learned at USA Basketball: Notes on Mike Hopkins, Jim Boeheim, Orange Madness and More (PS; Ditota)

...
1. What separates NBA players from NCAA players: Shooters. Everybody in the pro game can shoot it. It's stunning to see.

I watched 6-foot-9 Chandler Parsons drain 3-point shot after 3-point shot at West Point. I watched Steph Curry sink about 10 straight threes during Wednesday's pre-game warmups with his gorgeous, effortless stroke.

Everybody talks about the size, speed and athleticism of the NBA game, but for me, the biggest difference is how well NBA players shoot the ball.

2. Jim Boeheim seems relaxed and approachable: Team USA members (voluntarily) sat beside Boeheim and chatted and joked with him.

That seemed in stark contrast to the reactions of his Syracuse players, most of whom seem awed or maybe intimidated by their head coach. Of course, Orange players have reason to keep their respectful distance from Boeheim — he controls their playing destiny and the arc of their careers.

3. Derrick Rose is wildly popular: I had no idea.

Andy Rautins Signs with Italian Pro Team (PS; Waters)

Former Syracuse basketball player Andy Rautins will play for Cimberio Varese of the Italian Basketball League this season.

Rautins' agent, Austin Brown, confirmed the agreement.

Cimberio, historically known as Pallacanestro Varese, plays in Italy's Serie A as well as the prestigious EuroLeague.

For Rautins, who played at Syracuse from 2005 to 2010, the decision to play for Cimberio Varese is a move up Europe's basketball ladder. Last year, he played for the Fraport Skylines in Frankfurt, Germany. He averaged 17.6 points per game and made 42.4 percent of his 3-point shots until injuring his ankle.

Hakim Warrick Will Work Out with NBA Champion San Antonio Spurs (PS; Waters)

Hakim Warrick will continue his quest to return to the NBA with the San Antonio Spurs.

The former Syracuse University star confirmed Friday that he had been invited to a workout with the reigning NBA champions. Warrick will have his workout with the Spurs on Sept. 1.

Warrick, who played at Syracuse from 2001 to 2005, spent eight years in the NBA. The Memphis Grizzlies took him with the 19th pick in the 2005 NBA draft. In addition to the Grizzlies, the 6-foot-9 forward has played for the Milwaukee Bucks, the Chicago Bulls, the Phoenix Suns, the New Orleans Hornets and the Charlotte Bobcats. However, he last played in the NBA during the 2012-13 season with the Bobcats.

Warrick averaged 7.0 points in 27 games for Charlotte, but the Bobcats traded him to Orlando in February of 2013. The Magic released him two days later.

Report Says Italian Team Declines to Sign Eric Devendorf (PS; Ditota)

A report from a European basketball website said today that former Syracuse basketball guard Eric Devendorf will not be signed by an Italian basketball team because of "medical tests" that apparently indicated Devendorf was not healthy enough to play.

"Proger BLS Chieti (A2 Silver) decided against signing 27-year old American guard Eric Devendorf (193-82kg-87, college: Syracuse) after the medical tests. They revealed that the guard is not fully recovered from the recent injury."
The story at eurobasket.com did not specify the injury, though Devendorf had been recovering this summer from back surgery. He had the June surgery to repair a herniated disk in his lower back and told Mike Waters his tolerable level of pain enabled him to return to the basketball court earlier than his projected September start date.

How the NYS Fair Helped Introduce the Belgian Waffle to America (PS; Cazentre)

No Ongenaet

Only one place in the United States still serves "authentic" Belgian waffles exactly as that treat was introduced to Americans at the New York City World's Fair in 1964.

You'll find them at Maurice's Belgian Waffles, in the Dairy Products Building at theNew York State Fair.

"You guys in Syracuse are lucky -- you have the true Belgian waffles," said MariePaule Vermersch, whose family masterminded this international import. "No place else can say that."

At the State Fair, where words like "authentic" and "original" are slapped on just about everything, this may be the real deal. Here's how it happened:

In 1964, Vermersch and her parents, Maurice and Rose, arrived at the World's Fair site in Queens and set up a booth serving the popular street food from their home in Brussels, Belgium's capital.

Young the Giant is a Change of Pace at the NYS Fair (review; PS; Baker)

Young the Giant don't have a chart-topping single. They don't have sexy dancers. They don't have any celebrity fame to speak of. What they have is an eclectic sound, a soulful front man and a knack for performance. And that was more than enough for a gleeful performance at Chevy Court at the NYS Fair.

Yes, the indie rock band from California proved a refreshing change of pace at the Fair Sunday night.

There were no gimmicks. No shameless self promotion. No "put your hands up" refrains. No choreographed dancing. And no cover songs. Their music did the work. It was an unabashed rock show, led by front man Sameer Gadhia's aloofly artistic passion. And it was one of the high points of a musically diverse weekend at the Fair.

Gadhia poured his soul into the microphone, pulling at his shirt as he belted out one soaring refrain after the next. His voice burst with heart as it filled the less-than-full lawn at Chevy Court.

NYS Fair Attendance Remains Strong; Still Nearly 5K Ahead of Last Year (PS; O'Toole)

Attendance continued to soar Sunday at the New York State Fair.

Officials said 83,438 people passed through the state fair's turnstiles on Sunday, 381 more people than last year. In 2013, 83,057 attended the state fair on the fourth day.

Sunday's attendance marked highest first-Sunday attendance in the last five years and the third highest in the last 10 years.

"Absolutely perfect fair weather brought crowds out for a day in the sun," fair spokesman Dave Bullard said in an email.

So far this year, 4,920 more people have attended the first four days of the fair than during the same time period last year.
