Welcome to All Soul's Day

All Souls' Day, in Christianity, is a day commemorating the faithful departed, particularly but not exclusively one's relatives.[2][3] In Western Christianity the annual celebration is now held on 2 November and is associated with All Saints' Day (1 November) and its vigil, Halloween (31 October).[4] In the liturgical books of the western Catholic Church (the Latin Church) it is called the Commemoration of All the Faithful Departed, and is celebrated annually on 2 November, even if this date falls on a Sunday;[5]on this day Catholics pray for the dead.[6] In Anglicanism it is calledCommemoration of All Faithful Departed and is an optional celebration; Anglicans view All Souls' Day as an extension of the observance of All Saints' Day and it serves to "remember those who have died", in connection with the theological doctrines of the resurrection of the body and theCommunion of Saints.[7][8] In the Eastern Orthodox Church and the associated Eastern Catholic Churches, it is celebrated several times during the year and is not associated with the month of November.

Beliefs and practices associated with All Souls' Day vary widely among Christian churches and denominations.

Syracuse Basketball Stat of the Day (DO; Dougherty)

Every day this Syracuse basketball season, Daily Orange men’s basketball beat writer Jesse Dougherty will provide a fresh team or individual statistic.

The stats will come from a mix of Kenpom.com, Hoopmath.com, College Basketball Reference and Cuse.com. The statistics appear below in chronological order with the newest at the top. This will be updated every day with the newest statistic, which will first appear on Twitter (@dougherty_jesse and @DOSports) without the “Why this matters” analysis that you can read in this post.

If you want to see a specific statistic, tweet at one of those accounts or make a request in the comment section below.

November

Nov. 2: According to Kenpom.com, Kaleb Joseph’s assist rate — which divides a player’s total assists by the total field goals made while he’s on the court — of 23.6 percent ranked 17th in the ACC last year.

Why this matters: Joseph is probably going to come off the bench to start the season, and Jim Boeheim is expecting him to be a reliable contributor. Joseph was a freshman last year, but ranking 17th in assistant rate in a 15-team conference as a starting point guard is a really telling statistic of how the year went for him. Joseph’s coaches and teammates have said he’s improved his jump shot, but he’s surrounded by capable 3-point shooters and is still most valuable as a distributor. He just needs to make vast improvements when it comes to facilitating the offense.
