In the spring of 1928, Disney asked Ub Iwerks to start drawing up new character ideas. Iwerks tried sketches of various animals, such as dogs and cats, but none of these appealed to Disney. A female cow and male horse were also rejected. They would later turn up as Clarabelle Cow and Horace Horsecollar. (A male frog, also rejected, would later show up in Iwerks’ own Flip the Frog series.) Walt Disney got the inspiration for Mickey Mouse from a tame mouse at his desk at Laugh-O-Gram Studio in Kansas City, Missouri. In 1925, Hugh Harman drew some sketches of mice around a photograph of Walt Disney. These inspired Ub Iwerks to create a new mouse character for Disney. “Mortimer Mouse” had been Disney’s original name for the character before his wife, Lillian, convinced him to change it, and ultimately Mickey Mouse came to be. The actor Mickey Rooney claimed that, during his Mickey McGuire days, he met cartoonist Walt Disney at the Warner Brothers studio, and that Disney was inspired to name Mickey Mouse after him. This claim however has been debunked by Disney historian Jim Korkis, since at the time of Mickey Mouse’s development, Disney Studios had been located on Hyperion Avenue for several years, and Walt Disney never kept an office or other working space at Warner Brothers, having no professional relationship with Warner Brothers, as the Alice Comedies and Oswald cartoons were distributed by Universal.

Bonnies Fade Late,. Lose at Syracuse (buffalonews.com)
Outmanned and undersized, St. Bonaventure (1-1) gave Syracuse all it could handle for 30 minutes Tuesday night. But the Bonnies (1-1) simply wore out and dropped a 79-66 men’s basketball game to the Orange before a Carrier Dome crowd of 21,379.
After an early 5-3 deficit, Bona led until freshman forward Tyler Lydon’s three-point basket tied the game at 54-all with 9:03 left. The Bonnies managed only four field goals the rest of the way.
“In the first half, we did what we wanted to do offensively and defensively,” said Bona coach Mark Schmidt. “In the second half, Syracuse exposed us a little defensively. We had some opportunities to push the lead out a bit more, but I thought our effort for the most part was what we wanted. If we continue to have that kind of effort, we have a chance to be pretty good.
“The” Syracuse zone “is unique and I thought we did a good job in the first half, but not as good of a job in the second half. It wasn’t our offense that lost the game. Giving up 50 points in the second half won’t win too many games.”
Senior forward Michael Gbinije kept Syracuse close as the Bonnies built leads of 19-8, 32-21 in the first half and led 45-35 after a Denzel Gregg dunk with 15:42 left. Gbinije, who finished with 23 points, scored nine of the next 19 points as Syracuse built a 69-59 lead. The surge was capped by another three by Lydon. Syracuse then scored its next eight points at the free-throw line to close it out.

Gbinije Leads Cuse Over Bonnies (AP; Frank)
Michael Gbinije scored 23 points, Trevor Cooney had 17 and Syracuse overcame a listless first-half to defeat upstate foe St. Bonaventure 79-66 Tuesday.
Freshmen Malachi Richardson added 15 points and Tyler Lydon 13 for the Orange (2-0).
The upset-minded Bonnies (1-1), who last defeated Syracuse Jan. 26, 1981, enjoyed a 35-29 halftime lead and extended its lead to 45-35 on a slam by Syracuse native Denzel Gregg at 15:42.
The Orange then went on a 34-14 blitz over the next 12 minutes. Five points by Gbinije, who slammed home a Richardson air-balled 3-pointer at 13:03 brought the Orange within 3 at 48-45. A 3-pointer by Dion Wright as the 30-second shot clock expired extended the Bonnies lead to six.
Syracuse went on a 12-3 run and took its first lead of the half on a driving layup and foul shot by Cooney at 8:34. A 3-pointer by Lydon, his first of two in the half, tied the game at 54. SU then outscored the Bonnies 19-8. The run included seven points by Lydon and six foul shots by Cooney.
The Orange outscored the Bonnies 50-31 in the second half. Gbinije scored 13 in the second half while his running mate Cooney had 12. Gbinije finished with six assists and four steals.Jaylen Adams led the Bonnies with 16 points and seven assists. Dion Wright had 13 points.St. Bonaventure took a 35-29 lead at the half.

The warmer-than-normal November has been snow-free so far in Central New York, but that might change early next week.
A "substantial cold snap" will descend on Syracuse Monday, said AccuWeather.com meteorologist Ben Noll, and that could be enough to produce lake effect snow.
"This is going to be coldest air of the season so far in much of Central New York," Noll said. "I would not be surprised if by Tuesday morning you have maybe a few inches on the ground."
Any snow that falls won't stay around long, he said, as high temperatures rise into the high 40s by Wednesday, the day before Thanksgiving.
The National Weather Service also said snow is possible early next week.
"We may see our first widespread snow event for Monday," said Ray Brady, a weather service meteorologist. "It doesn't look particularly heavy, but it's too far out to get into any details."
Syracuse had a trace of snow on Nov. 14, but that's it for the month. Normal snowfall for November is 9.5 inches. Since records began in 1902, nine Novembers have had no measurable snowfall.
The only snow in Syracuse so far this year was 0.4 inches on Oct. 18. That day, areas of Oswego County got hit with 9 inches of lake effect snow.
