Welcome to Audubon Day!

John James Audubon (1785 1851) was America's foremost ornithological illustrator. Afterstudying drawing in Paris under the French painter Jacques Louis David, Audubonstruggled for many years to make a living from his art, shuttling back and forth between Europe and the United States and supplementing his income by giving drawing lessons, turning out portraits, playing the flute or violin at local dances, and at one time running ageneral store. In 1820 he began a flatboat excursion down the Mississippi River to seek out newvarieties of birds to paint. Eventually he had enough bird portraits to publish in book form.Birds of America, produced with the help of engraver Robert Havell, Jr., contains 435handcolored plates and was published in "elephant folio" format to accommodate the lifesized portrayals of birds on which Audubon insisted. After his death in 1851, Audubon's wife Lucy returned to teaching to support herself. Oneof her students, George Bird Grinnell, became the editor of Forest and Stream magazine and in 1886 organized the Audubon Society for the study and protection of birds. Todaythere are many branches of this organization, known as the National Audubon Society, and it remains dedicated to the conservation of wildlife and natural resources. Itsmembers honor Audubon on his birthday, April 26. In some states, Audubon Day andARBOR DAY are celebrated together by planting trees in bird sanctuaries.

For Dino Babers, It is About 'Growing' the Orange Program (the juice; Bierman)

Like most college football coaches, Dino Babers can be engaging, personable, preacher-like, a story teller, and honest to a point but reluctant to share many details about his program during his interactions with the media, especially now that he’s gained the experience of embarking on his third head coaching term in a span of just five years, quickly ascending from the FCS ranks to the MAC to the Power 5 ACC, in what has been a 32 year football coaching odyssey from Hawai’i to now Syracuse.

From day one Babers got everyone in Orange Nation thoroughly energized with his proclamation (in sermon-like fashion) about the never-before-seen-in-these-parts, fast-paced offense he was bringing to his new indoor home field, and he’s had only 15 spring practices in an indoor setting to gauge the athletes he inherited and recruited to run it.

But those three decades plus of coaching, even learning alongside esteemed offensive-minded mentors such as Homer Smith, Dick Tomey and Art Briles, has reinforced to Babers the other components to winning football besides an offensive engine that always has the pedal to the metal attempting to race up and down the field scoring points.

“Any time you go to a major Power 5 conference there’s going to be more of an emphasis of what kind of defense you play, how you play in special teams, how your guys match up,” Babers said last week taking part in the ACC coaches media digital conference call after all the league programs (plus Notre Dame) finished spring drills.

2016 SU Opponent Preview: USF Bulls (TNIAAM; Weinheimer)

The Syracuse Orange football season begins in 127 days. That seems like a long time, and it is. But given the excitement around the fan base for the start of the Dino Babers era, why not get going a little early on previews? We start with our opponents, which are just as difficult as ever. Each week, we'll take a look at a team on Syracuse's 2016 schedule. Today, we continue with the::

USF Bulls
School: University of South Florida

Mascot: Bulls

#BRAND Slogan: "A high-impact, global research university dedicated to student success."

Alternate #BRAND Slogan Suggestions: "No, not the University of San Francisco." "Remember Matt Grothe?"

Recommended Blog: The Daily Stampede (welcome back, Voodoo Five gang!)

Conference: AAC

Coach: Willie Taggart, 4th year. Taggart was probably supposed to get fired last year. The team was not getting much better and the fan base was getting tired of the Bulls sitting in mediocrity for years on end. Then, oddly, Taggart's young USF squad went 8-5 and had a shot at playing for a conference title against Houston. Now the question becomes how he'll do with some real expectations in Tampa.

2015 Record: (8-5) (6-2)

Terrel Hunt Still Determined to Prove Himself in the NFL (TNIAAM; Weinheimer)

Terrrel Hunt is resigned to the fact that he will not hear his name called in the upcoming NFL Draft. The former Syracuse Orangequarterback was denied a medical redshirt which would have granted him a 6th year of eligibility, a decision that Hunt says he was "shocked" about in an article from Newsday's Kimberly Martin:

After a season-ending fractured fibula in the fifth game of Syracuse's 2014 season, he tore an Achilies tendon in the Orange's season opener last year. In November, the NCAA denied Hunt's extension of eligibility waiver for a sixth season. Hunt, who redshirted as a freshman in 2011, competed in more than 30 percent of Syracuse's scheduled games in 2014, missing the cutoff for a medical redshirt year.

"I was really shocked," said Hunt, who earned the starting job in 2013 and led the Orange to a 21-17 victory over Minnesota in the Texas Bowl on December 27, 2013. "I thought it was kind of a no-brainer."

Despite being denied a final season in Central New York, Hunt is still determined to make it to the NFL. He has been brought in for a workout with the New York Giants, and his agent has received calls from the 49ers,Raiders, Cardinals, and Eagles. Despite only having one call for a workout prior to the draft, Hunt's confidence and resolve are what keep him moving forward in chasing his dream:

Moracco has been mayor of Frankfort in Herkimer County since June 2004 and has been a sign crew supervisor with the state DOT since September 2001, according to his hisLinkedIn page.
