Twilight-Zone-Day.jpg

Welcome to National Twilight Zone Day!

Twilight Zone Day is mysterious, weird, surreal and perhaps a little scary. We can think of many other adjectives, but I think you get the picture. Every once in a while, you have a day like this. And, today is designed to be that day.

The television show The Twilight Zone, was created, written and narrated by Rod Serling. It premiered on October 1, 1959. The episodes were wildly popular, stretched the imagination, and captivated viewers. The show aired from 1959-1964.

3-Star Florida CB Favors Syracuse, Will Visit Nebraska This Summer (chatsports.com; Rauf)

The Nebraska Cornhuskers offered three-star cornerback Brian Edwards (Hollywood, FL) recently, and he's already planned a vist to Lincoln.

According to 247sports, he will make the trip to Nebraska on June 11, which is the first of the Huskers' Big Red Weekend events.

Defensive coordinator Mark Banker told Edwards that they would use him at both cornerback and safety, something that is intriguing to him.

Edwards is ranked as the No. 36 cornerback and No. 401 overall prospect in the country. Syracuse is currently the favorite to land him, but Miami, LSU and North Carolina are all close behind.

Cherry Hill West CB Harrison Hand One of the Top Players From NJ in Class of 2017 (nj.com; Hunt)

If there were any doubts about Cherry Hill (N.J.) West three-star cornerback Harrison Hand going into the month of May, they have been erased, as he's proven over the past two weeks to be one of N.J.'s elite recruits.

Scouts always knew Hand could run, as he had starred in track and field up until this year.

But there were questions as to whether he was just fast or if that speed actually translates to the football field.
...

...
Hand has added offers from Syracuse, Pitt and Virginia Tech since his big weekend, while coaches from Ohio State, Alabama, Purdue and Villanova have also picked up the scent, visited his school and could offer after further evaluation.

"I'm competitive and they say they love that," said Hand. "I'm aggressive and I love to hit. I'm fast and rush to the ball, whether I read run or pass."

Marquez Hodge NFL Prospect?

Next NFL Prospects for Syracuse (todaysu.com; Holcomb)

When a program goes 7-17 over the course of two seasons, the NFL prospects are likely to be few and far between. That’s held true for Syracuse, as only one Orange player, punter Riley Dixon, has been selected in the NFL Draft in the last two years.

But with new head coach Dino Babers, that could change as early as next year. Here are three players, who with solid 2016 seasons, could see their names called during the 2017 NFL Draft.

DE Gabe Sherrod

The graduate student transfer is the only guaranteed NFL draft pick heading into the season.

At Delaware State, he was an absolute animal, recording 64 tackles, including 25.0 for loss and eight sacks last season. He finished with the second-most tackles for loss in all FCS football.

With very little depth at defensive end, Sherrod will probably start right away and will be responsible for trying to elevate Syracuse’s defensive line, which ESPN ranked the worst in the ACC. If he has a big year and the Orange defense improves, his draft stock will only rise.

Despite committing over two months ago, there have been rumors circling within the last week that Sherrod visited Michigan State’s campus and still might not attend Syracuse. However, Syracuse football beat writer Stephen Bailey of The Syracuse Post-Standard confirmed Monday that Sherrod is committed to Syracuse and will begin his graduate classes on May 21.

Gophers Interviewing Four AD Candidates This Week, Including Sean Frazier (twincities.com; Fuller)

The University of Minnesota athletics director search is in a critical phase with interviews this week with finalists for the job.

Northern Illinois AD Sean Frazier, Penn State deputy AD Phil Esten, Gophers interim AD Beth Goetz and a previously unknown name are among the final candidates being interviewed by a five-member subcommittee that will send its recommendation to university President Eric Kaler, according to sources.

Frazier, 47, has spent the past three seasons as the NIU athletics director. The former Alabama football player worked as a deputy administrator for Wisconsin AD Barry Alvarez during three Rose Bowl seasons. During his six years with the Badgers, he was a lead fundraiser and was responsible for men’s basketball, football and hockey. Frazier’s name came up in AD searches at Pittsburgh, Illinois and Syracuse, but he didn’t interview for them.

Beleaguered Penn State HC James Franklin

Reports Confirm Penn State Presence at at Least 8 Satellite Camps (centredaily.com; Rodrigue)

In the two weeks since the NCAA overruled a previous ban on satellite camps, reports and host schools have confirmed the presence of Penn State football at at least eight separate camps to be held in June, with more likely to follow.

From a structural perspective, satellite camps are hosted by a school with a rich recruiting pocket in the surrounding area and invite preps players to participate for a fee as well as members of high-level coaching staffs from around the country.

For Penn State, these include confirmation by both Bowling Green (Ohio) and Appalachian State (Boone, N.C., held at Charlotte High School; Florida’s Jim McElwain will also be a guest) of camps on June 13 and June 14, respectively. Old Dominion (Norfolk, Va.) also confirmed a camp with Penn State that, according to the Virginian-Pilot, is expecting over 1,000 participants for June 16. Syracuse will also be at the camp.

Looks like both Bowling Green and Appalachian State have confirmed satellite camps with Penn State, joining Old Dominion. More in a bit.

Recruiting site 247 Sports also confirmed a list of stops for Penn State this summer, including a “tentative stop in New Jersey on June 15,” (early reports say it will be at Fordham with offensive coordinator Joe Moorhead’s old staff), a quick stop back to home base for the Elite I Camp on June 17, and will also host the “LIONStrong 7-on-7 Passing Camp and Big Man Challenge” on the following day.

Examining the Ohio State-Michigan Satellite Camp Duel (nj.com; Hunt)

Monday, it was revealed that Rutgers will hold a satellite camp on June 8 at Fairleigh Dickinson, a small college in New Jersey, where they will be accompanied by coaching staffs from Ohio State and Temple.
The announcement comes on the heels of Michigan's plan to host a satellite camp at Paramus Catholic high school on the same day, where they will be joined by coaches from Syracuse, Boston College, Maryland, Monmouth and Pittsburgh.

But what does it all mean?

Sean McDonough Proves Syracuse Rules Sports Broadcasting (2paragraphs.com)

Veteran broadcaster Sean McDonough's move to Monday Night Football is just another ho-hum win for Syracuse University. Most people know that while watching the NFL you're bound to encounter someUSC or Alabama alum. Turn on an NBA game and chances are North Carolina, Duke and/or Kentucky is represented. Fewer people know that when you're watching a game on television, there's likely a Syracuse University grad behind the broadcast. There's even a pretty good chance that he or she is talking to you.

At Monday Night Football, Syracuse grad Sean McDonough will replace Syracuse grad Mike Tirico. The hub of the Syracuse sports media empire is the S.I. Newhouse School of Public Communications, which offers programs in graphic design, PR, advertising, broadcasting and more. But it's in sports journalism/broadcasting that Syracuse has left its ubiquitous mark. Tirico leaves for NBC, lured by the Olympics. Speaking of Olympics, Olympic specialist Bob Costas is a Syracuse alum. Radio's Craig Carton? Orange.Ian Eagle at CBS. Dick Stockton. Beth Mowins. MMA journo Ariel Helwani. Guy named Marv Albert, too.
