Welcome to Greenpeace Day!

It was 40 years ago that a ragtag group of hippies first set sail from Burrard Inlet in an attempt to stop the U.S. government from blowing up nuclear bombs off the coast of Alaska. Worried the testing could trigger devastating tsunamis, the young environmentalists initially called themselves the Don't Make a Wave Foundation, but soon ended up themselves making waves of their own under their new nom de guerre, Greenpeace.

The Greenpeace Foundations has since become the worlds largest, independent environmental organization and famous (or infamous, depending on your point of view or stock holdings) for taking a hands-on approach to a variety of important issues ranging from global warming to rainforest deforestation, overfishing and commercial whaling.

Mayor Gregor Robertson has proclaimed Sept. 15 the anniversary of the group's maiden voyage, to be Greenpeace Day in the homegrown heroes' honour. It's a day Barbara Stowe, the daughter of original founders Irving Stowe and Dorothy Rabinowitz, didn't expect would ever come.

Donovan McNabb among 3 Syracuse football nominees for Pro Football Hall of Fame (PS; Owens)

Former Syracuse University star Donovan McNabb is one of 10 first-time eligibles on the list of nominees for the Pro Football Hall of Fame's Class of 2017.

The list, which includes 94 former players and coaches, was released Wednesday night. McNabb joins two other former Orange players, fullback Daryl Johnston and kicker Gary Anderson, on the list of nominees.

Former Syracuse wide receiver Marvin Harrison was part of the Hall of Fame's Class of 2016.

According to the Hall of Fame website, the list will be trimmed to 25 semifinalists in November and 15 finalists in January before the Class of 2017 is selected in February.

McNabb was quarterback for Syracuse from 1995 to 1998, and went on to play 13 years in the NFL. McNabb played 11 seasons for the Philadelphia Eagles before finishing his career with stints in Washington and Minnesota. McNabb threw for 37,276 yards and 234 touchdowns in his NFL career.

Johnston played for SU from 1985 to 1988, and was a two-time Pro Bowler in 11 seasons with the Dallas Cowboys.

Anderson played for SU from 1978 to 1981 and kicked for five teams in a 23-year NFL career.

In addition to McNabb, first-time nominees include LaDainian Tomlinson, Hines Ward, Brian Dawkins, Jason Taylor, Chad Johnson, Olin Kreutz, Joey Porter, Derrick Mason and Bob Sanders.

Wednesday Morning Practice Report (thedailystampdede.com)

The Bulls continue their preparation for Saturday’s game at Syracuse.

The Bulls practiced this morning in full pads as they work toward getting ready to face off with the Syracuse Orange on Saturday at the Carrier Dome.

We only got to see the cool down session at the end of practice, but Quinton Flowers, co-offensive coordinator T.J. Weist, and defensive coordinator Raymond Woodie did speak with the media afterwards.

Quinton Flowers on the Syracuse game last year:

“Everything turned around in the Syracuse game. It goes goes back to when Coach T gave me the ‘Go’ word and I did what I was expected to do and what my team was looking for and we came out with a victory.”

On the difficulties of away games:

“Just like when we play at home, we still have to lock in even though we’re on the road. Everyone has to what they have to do. Whatever Coach calls we have to just execute the play. And if we do that, we should come out with a victory.”

On getting recognized as the AAC Player of the Week:

“It was very good, but at the end of the day I still have to stay humble like I always was before. Growing up my mom always told me, ‘Just stay focused and do what you have to do,’ and that’s what I come out here and do every day.”

On leaving plays out there on Saturday and the potential of the offense:

“Even though I left plays out there and (could) still be the Player of the Week, it just shows you that there’s more yards we can put up out there. We’re gonna try to get it this week.”

Syracuse football: Dino Babers lists Orange’s three keys to success vs. USF (TNIAAM; Gilberg)

And other big takeaways from the ACC Coaches Teleconference.

Syracuse (1-1, 0-1 in ACC) will look to rebound from its blowout loss against Louisville last week when they take the field against the USF Bulls (2-0; 0-0 in AAC) Saturday at 3 p.m. ET. Syracuse coach Dino Babers addressed his team’s recent woes and necessary adjustments while appearing on the ACC Coaches Teleconference Wednesday morning.

Here are the biggest takeaways.

Keys to Success

The Orange may be a 14.5-point underdog entering Saturday’s matchup against USF, but if college football has taught us anything, it’s to never underestimate your opponent as crazy upsets occur on a weekly basis.

For Syracuse to pull out the surprise win on Saturday, Babers said his team will need to limit their turnorvers, win the kicking game and play better defense – the latter of which he emphatically emphasized after he saw his team give up 21 points to Louisville within the first five minutes last week.

“We’ve got to play better defense,” Babers said. “You can’t give up 21 points that fast in a football game and always be able to fight yourself back to a situation where you have a chance to win. We’ve got to find a way to play better defense early and come out of the gate ready to go.”

Phillipsburg's pro football hall-of-famer gets shrine in county hall, too (lehighvalleylive.com; Novak)

Jim Ringo is already in the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio.

Now, the 1949 Phillipsburg High School graduate is being honored in his home county's hall, too.

Ringo, who played center for the Green Bay Packers and Philadelphia Eagles between 1953 and 1957, is among the seven people named to the Warren County Hall of Fame for 2016.

The group, which includes local business figures and volunteers, will officially be inducted at an Oct. 29 dinner at Hawk Pointe Country Club in Washington Township. The hall began in 2010.

The announcement released Wednesday provided some background on this year's inductees:

Jim Ringo (posthumous): A Phillipsburg High School Class of 1949 alum, Ringo graduated from Syracuse University in 1953 and played in the NFL for 15 seasons, making the Pro Bowl 10 times. Ringo played in 182 straight games, a record at the time. He later became the head coach of the Buffalo Bills for one season. His ties to Phillipsburg remained strong and retired PHS coach Bob Stem said Ringo voluntarily came back to the school every year to teach skills to the high school players. Ringo died in 2007 at the age of 75.
