Welcome to Syracuse Wins Third National Championship in Men's Basketball Day!

SU News

Trill Williams is one of the most talented and exciting players on the Syracuse football team. He starred at Stepinac High School where he became a four star recruit prior to joining the Orange. Now he is set to welcome one of his classmates to campus, as former Stepinac basketball star Alan Griffin is transferring to Syracuse from Illinois. The two are friends dating back to their time in high school.

"In high school, we had lunch together all the time," Griffin said. "We had a couple classes. We just be laughing and stuff. Not in class, but always in lunch we would joke around and stuff. Our relationship is close. We kept in touch and would text each other to make sure we were doing good. Then when he found out I might be transferring to Syracuse, he texted me 'slide to Cuse' which means come to Cuse basically. He was just telling me how good the program was and that we could be reunited basically."

Trill's dad, Tre, provided further insight into their relationship.

"They talk constantly. He's one of Trill's close friends," Williams said. "They have pretty much the same demeanor and for them to be the best at their high school you couldn't tell. Imagine having him and Trill in the same class. So they pretty much hung together."

Syracuse quarterback Tommy DeVito returns for his second year as the starter. Can he help the Orange exceed Las Vegas' expectations and make a bowl game?Dennis Nett | dnett@syracuse.com

https://www.syracuse.com/orangefoot...-caesars--releases-early-2020-win-totals.html (PS; Bailey)

While the college football world is waiting to see how the coronavirus pandemic will affect the 2020 season, oddsmakers in Las Vegas rolled out an annual offseason projection on Monday.

Caesars released early win totals for every Football Bowl Subdivision team, penciling Syracuse football in at 5.5 victories.

ACC, Big 12 and Pac-12 wins from ⁦@CaesarsEnt⁩

— Chris Fallica (@chrisfallica) April 6, 2020
Caesars listed nine Atlantic Coast Conference programs with higher win totals than the Orange, led by Clemson (11.5) in the Atlantic Division and Miami (nine) in the Coastal Division. Three other Atlantic Division programs are projected to make a bowl game: Florida State (7.5), Louisville (7.5) and Wake Forest (seven).

SU, coming off a disappointing 5-7 campaign in Year 4 of the Dino Babers era, is expected to undergo significant change this offseason. Babers hired defensive coordinator Tony White to install the 3-3-5 system he learned at San Diego State under Rocky Long, and he reunited with offensive coordinator Sterlin Gilbert.

But spring ball was cut short after three practices as Syracuse’s campus shut down due to the pandemic. Now Babers and Co. are waiting to learn when they can return to in-person team activities, as well as if and when their season will begin. And if games do take place, the Orange could be at a disadvantage based on its lack of practice and conditioning time.

Orange Watch: Fondly remembering former Syracuse football coach Frank Maloney - The Juice Online (the juice; Bierman)

Item: Syracuse athletics announced through his family that Maloney died Monday at his Chicago home at age 79. He served Syracuse honorably between two college football Hall of Fame members, Ben Schwartzwalder and Dick MacPherson. Maloney led the Orangemen to their first bowl game victory in 18-years with the 1979 Independence Bowl blitz over McNeese State, was the SU coach in Archbold Stadium’s last season and the Dome’s first season, while mentoring 19 Syracuse NFL draft picks over seven years.

The old adage in coaching is don’t be the one succeeding a legend. It’s almost always a no-win situation.

Instead, it’s better to be the person who succeeds the person who succeeds a legend.

Case in point. After 25 years in which the brilliant Ben Schwartzwalder crafted an eventual Hall of Fame career, brought Syracuse its only national championship in 1959, was prominent in his guidance of the first African-American Heisman Trophy winner, Ernie Davis in 1961, s story later portrayed on the big screen by actor Dennis Quaid in 2008’s “The Express,” but was later stung by the “Syracuse 8” racially-charged player boycott in 1970, signaling the Coach Ben era on The Hill was shortly coming to an end.

In came Frank Maloney following the 1973 season. A ‘Michigan Man’ to the core under Bo Schembechler, Maloney played offensive guard for the Wolverines in the early sixties, then was an assistant at UM from 1969 until being hired by Syracuse.

Wanting to completely distance himself from the Schwartzwalder era, Maloney, much to the chagrin of many close to the ‘Cuse program, changed the uniforms in year one. Out was the signature orange helmet, replaced by a mundane white helmet with a blue decal and the letters “SU” in orange, and the familiar blue jerseys replaced by orange, a look that lasted only three seasons before the return to orange helmets and blue home jerseys.

All-time Best Team by school (RX; HM)

All-time Best Team by school

Breaking down the greatest single season from each ACC college football team
A look at the best individual seasons produced by all 14 ACC teams (plus Notre Dame) from CBS Sports - here are their picks:

1940 Boston College (11-0)
2018 Clemson (15-0)
1941 Duke (9-1)
2013 Florida State (14-0)
1990 Georgia Tech (11-0-1)
2006 Louisville (12-1)
2001 Miami (12-0)
1997 North Carolina (11-1)
2002 NC State (11-3)
1976 Pittsburgh (12-0)
1959 Syracuse (11-0)
1995 Virginia (9-4)
1999 Virginia Tech (11-1)
2006 Wake Forest (11-3)
1988 Notre Dame (12-0)
I actually covered this topic in July of 2018 [LINK] and the only team I'd change from that article is Clemson (from the 2016 team that went 14-1 to the 2018 team that finished the season 15-0 and throttled Alabama 44-16 in the national championship game). No one else really has any new "best ever" team, IMO.

There is one point of disagreement between my list and CBS' list: the Virginia Cavaliers. I picked the 1989 team; they picked 1995. Here are the relevant stats:

1989 Cavaliers 10-3
lost to #2 Notre Dame, #15 Clemson and #11 Illinois
beat #12 Penn State and #18 NC State
tied for 1st in the ACC (with Duke, but won head-to-head)

Clemson favored to rule ACC, win national title (ESPN; Purdum)

The Clemson Tigers have won five consecutive ACC championships, going 43-2 in conference play during that stretch, and oddsmakers expect the Tigers' ACC dominance to continue this season but aren't convinced that coach Dabo Swinney's squad is the best in the nation.

Caesars has installed Clemson as a giant -600 favorite to win the ACC championship game. The Tigers are the second-largest preseason favorite in a Power 5 conference since 2010, behind only the Clemson team of last season (-650).

Clemson's season-win total opened at 11.5 at Caesars , with the vigorish tilted toward the over, meaning the Tigers are favored to complete a third straight unbeaten regular season. Clemson's win total is the highest in the nation.

With quarterback Trevor Lawrence and running back Travis Etienne returning -- and a seemingly smoother path through conference play than other contenders -- the Tigers also have emerged as the consensus favorites to win the national championship. At DraftKings' , more bets have been placed on Clemson to win the national championship than have been bet on any other team.

Jeff Davis, director of trading for Caesars Sportsbooks, says while Clemson is the favorite, Ohio State and Alabama are higher up in his power ratings.

College Football Conference Realignment: Minor Improvements or a Major Overhaul (shakinthesouthland.com; Kantor)

In 2025, the Big 12’s grant of rights, which ensures the conference owns each member’s TV rights, expires. It’s possible we see another round of realignment then. The ACC’s agreement is longer, and other conferences; agreements vary, but for the sake of this article, I’ll highlight a couple of conference realignment wishes I have as if these would happen in the 2024-2027 time frame. I’ll paint a somewhat realistic scenario (minor realignment scenario) and a pie in the sky scenario (six 12 team conferences). Let’s start with the more realistic one:
