Welcome to National Bathtub Day!

Although plumbing systems for bathing date back to around 3300 BCE, the earliest found bathtub dates to about 1700 BCE, and was found in Crete. Some sources claim that the first modern bathtub was invented in 1828, possibly even on Bathtub Day, but most likely that is a based on a made up story from H.L. Mencken. Bathtubs can be either built-in, sunken, or free standing, and many are made from bonding porcelain enamel on cast iron, a process that was started in the 1880's. The clawfoot bathtub was wildly popular in the late 19th century, having originated in Holland in the mid 18th century. It lost its popularity in the second half of the 20th century as the built-in version was ascendent.

Syracuse is slight underdog vs. Duke (247sports.com; Bailey)

Syracuse football is slotted as a 2.5-point underdog against Duke, its upcoming opponent, in William Hill's . The Orange (1-2, 1-2 ACC) will host the Blue Devils (0-4, 0-4) on Saturday at 12:30 p.m.

SU is coming off a bye week while Duke lost to Virginia Tech 38-31 on Saturday -- its closest contest one month into a winless season. The projected total for the game is 49 points.

Syracuse is 2-1 against the spread thus far in 2020, weighing in as substantial dogs in early season road matchups against North Carolina and Pittsburgh. Dino Babers and Co. entered last weekend's matchup with Georgia Tech pegged to lose by 7.5 points before defeating the Yellow Jackets 37-20.

Babers is hopeful that his team will be fresher after a week off, particularly starters who took on a heavy workload during the first three games after a truncated offseason. The injury toll for Syracuse has already been heavy with All-American junior safety Andre Cisco suffering a lower-body injury during warm-ups two weekends ago. Cisco and redshirt junior Eric Coley are both injured in the secondary while redshirt freshman running back Jawhar Jordan sustained an injury versus Georgia Tech and redshirt junior guard Dakota Davis has been out all fall.

Breaking down Syracuse football and ACC with ESPN's David Hale (the juice; podcast; Cheng)

It’s hard to believe that we are right at the midway point of the 2020 college football season. It’s been a wacky ride so far, and to make sense of it, we spoke to ESPN college football writer David Hale. It seems like the college football playoff is headed toward Clemson, the Big 10 champion, and the top to SEC teams (Pac 12 and Group of 5 be damned).

David also breaks down the state of the ACC. Can anyone stop Clemson? How did Pitt lose to NC State? Did Syracuse finally fix its offense? We go through that and more in this week’s Juice on the Cuse Podcast.

Editor in chief Brad Bierman then joins me to preview this weekend’s matchup against 0-4 Duke. Syracuse will be trying for its second win of the season on its home stand, and Brad also gives his outlook on the entire ACC.

Brad closes the show by talking about the start of college basketball practice, while I talk about an upcoming autobiography from Syracuse legend and NBA Hall of Famer Dave Bing.

Film room: Duke football will need to set the edge against Syracuse (dukechronicle; Levitan)

Sean Taylor? Sigh

Duke will travel to Upstate New York to face off against Syracuse this Saturday. With the Blue Devils looking to avenge last season's devastating 49-6 loss to the Orange, the Blue Zone has you covered with some film study:

Following their fourth defeat in as many weeks, the Blue Devils will travel to the Carrier Dome for a battle with Syracuse this Saturday. The Orange (1-2, 1-2 ACC) are looking to build off an impressive first win against Georgia Tech in which their defense forced four interceptions, while Duke hopes to turn a matchup with its weakest opponent yet into the team’s first victory. But if Duke hopes to finally enter the win column this weekend, they have plenty of cleaning up to do, particularly when it comes to their rushing defense.

This past Saturday, Virginia Tech running back Khalil Herbert became the latest beneficiary of a Duke defense that is yielding a league-worst 193.5 YPG on the ground. The graduate transfer from Kansas had a career day, tallying 208 yards on 20 carries and finding paydirt twice on a pair of long fourth-quarter runs. Opposing quarterback Braxton Burmeister never reached double-digit completions, but he never had to: the Hokies still scored 38 points behind a fearsome 324 yards rushing as a team. After yet another defensive collapse, it is officially time to wonder, what is going on with Duke’s struggles against the run?

One aspect in which Herbert excelled this weekend was his ability to bounce to the outside for long runs. The Blue Devils have struggled to keep opposing running backs between the tackles all season, and the reasons for their struggles are quite evident on tape. One of the most important concepts for any defense is what coaches call “setting the edge,” and it is one that the Duke defensive line has struggled mightily to employ thus far. Let’s take a look at this tactic in action with Nick Bosa, one of the best in the business.

David Cutcliffe Press Conference Quotes: Syracuse - Duke University (goduke.com)

Duke football head coach David Cutcliffe met with members of the media virtually on Monday afternoon for his weekly press conference.

The Blue Devils head to Syracuse, N.Y., for their fifth contest of the 2020 season at Syracuse. The game will be broadcast on RSN with Tom Werme, James Bates, and Abby Labar on the call. Kickoff is slated for 12:30 p.m. The game can also be heard on the Blue Devil Sports Network from Learfield IMG College through the TuneIn app or goduke.com

David Cutcliffe Duke Football Head Coach
(Ref.: Opening Statement)
"As I said after the game just referring to the last game -- it's been a little bit of a repetitive feeling as you come up and why have you gotten beat. The inconsistency of our team falls and lies on the head coach. The inconsistency of our offense lies, in this case, on the head coach. You look at everything you're doing and we're doing that. But most importantly, we don't lose spirit. We don't lose our work ethic. Not as easy as people might think when our players are doing everything we're asking them to do and between school and football there really is no other time for them. I'm very proud of their Sunday's, of how they approach getting back ready. Obviously, it's Monday our day off. We've spent a lot of time over the last two days now moving forward with Syracuse.

"Syracuse is a really good football team. Dino Babers does a great job. He's a great coach. They've got a new defensive coordinator with a pretty complex system. Obviously, with their offense they're going to play fast. They're going to spread the field. They've got some good football players and an outstanding quarterback in (Tommy) DeVito. A big challenge for us and a year ago, they came down here and spanked us pretty badly. Another big challenge. The fifth ACC game in a row. It is what it is. It's 2020. We're not going to run from the challenge. We are going to run to the challenge. We look forward to getting on the practice field tomorrow and getting our football team better in every aspect."

Syracuse Football: Even with week off, roster remains a bit banged up (itlh; Adler)

Some question marks persist for Syracuse football on the injury front as the Orange prepares to host Duke this coming Saturday afternoon.

Syracuse football, after picking up its first victory of the 2020 campaign against Georgia Tech on Sept. 26 inside the newly renovated Carrier Dome, had an opportunity for its players to get an extended period of rest due to the Orange (1-2) not competing this past weekend.

But even with the two-week lapse in between its defeat of the Yellow Jackets and when its home affair this Saturday afternoon versus winless Duke will transpire, there is concern about whether pre-season All-American safety Andre Cisco and several other ‘Cuse guys can suit up in the Orange’s Atlantic Coast Conference clash with the Blue Devils (0-4).

Duke hasn’t prevailed in a game so far in the fall term, however, the Blue Devils have managed to keep things close in several of their league encounters.

Recruit of the Week: Justin Lamson (SI; McAllister)

We are introducing a new feature here on AllSyracuse.com, part of the Sports Illustrated network. Every Tuesday we will unveil our "Recruit of the Week." That include a detailed breakdown of the player, how they project to Syracuse if they're a commit or would fit at Syracuse if they are uncommitted, a look at their recruitment if they are uncommitted, and more. Our first such prospect is Syracuse quarterback commit Justin Lamson.

In the video at the top of the page, SI All-American's John Garcia Jr. breaks down Lamson's strengths, weaknesses and provides a player comparison that should have Syracuse fans excited about his future.

Recruit of the Week: Justin Lamson
Position: Quarterback
Height/Weight: 6-3, 210 lbs
School: Oak Ridge (El Dorado Hills, CA)
Recruiting Status: Committed to Syracuse
Other Notable Offers: Boise State, Louisville

Positives: "There is a lot to like about Justin Lamson, and this is independent of the fit at Syracuse," Garcia Jr. said. "From an athletic profile standpoint, Justin's got a lot going on. 6-1, 6-2, right around or above 200 pounds. He's a physically developed kid from a height and weight standpoint. He's a great athlete. This year, especially if you're a Syracuse fan, you see what a lack of a great athlete does to your quarterback position. It's sort of minimizing in this modern age. Justin doesn't have to worry about that. he's a really good athlete. Comfortable running with the football and throwing on the run, which is more important in this scenario when projecting him to the next level.

Chandler Jones nears 100 sacks (Syracuse and CNY in the NFL) (newyorkstateupstate.com; Herbert)

Former Syracuse football star Chandler Jones is nearing the 100-sack mark in just his ninth NFL season.

Jones had four tackles for the Arizona Cardinals Sunday in a 31-21 loss to the Carolina Panthers, but still has only one sack in four games this year. Cardinals coach Kliff Kingsbury told ESPN that other teams are planning for Jones more after his 19-sack season last year.

Still, the 30-year-old linebacker could become one of the 10 fastest players to record 100 career sacks if he gets three more by mid-December — Jones' 97 sacks are the most in the league since 2012, his rookie season. He and the Houston Texans' J.J. Watt, with 98 career sacks, would be the 35th and 36th players to record 100 sacks since the NFL began keeping track of the stat in 1982.

Georgia Tech Football: Is Friday A Must Win for Georgia Tech? (yellowjackedup.com; Callaghan-Croley)

If the Jackets don’t win on Friday night against Louisville, it could very quickly become an ugly season on The Flats.

Entering Friday, the argument could be made that the game is a must-win for the Yellow Jackets but in the same token is a must-win for Louisville. A loss on Friday for either team would drop them to 1-3 on the season after both got off to good week one starts before putting in back-to-back disappointing efforts in weeks two and three.

For the Yellow Jackets, the season got off to such a good start, upsetting Florida State as a double-digit underdog. After starting off well against Central Florida the next week, the Jackets got too sloppy against the Knights and eventually saw UCF pull away to a 49-24 blowout victory in the Jackets home opener.

Then two weeks ago, the Jackets traveled to Syracuse and put in one of the most disappointing efforts of the Geoff Collins era, losing 37-20 in the Carrier Dome.

Column: College football sending wrong messages vs COVID-19 (AP; Newberry)

C'mon, college football, you've got to do better.

Coaches must set an example by wearing their masks. Fans shouldn't be cheering from their seats or mugging for the cameras without face coverings. Schools must mandate safety checks for anyone entering the stadium.

That's the only way they're going to get through this most tenuous of seasons — somewhat safely, at least — in the midst of an unchecked pandemic that has already claimed more than 200,000 American lives.

The biggest game of this past weekend produced all sorts of disturbing images. Georgia, the third-ranked team in the country, requires fans to wear masks when they enter Sanford Stadium and while they're on the concourses, but they can take them off at their socially distanced seats.

So, naturally, hardly anyone was wearing a mask while watching a 27-6 victory over Auburn in the first top 10 matchup of the season.

Sure, Georgia was following Southeastern Conference guidelines, and school officials insisted that they maintained a safe environment for an outdoor event, but the message was not a good one.

Especially when Bulldogs coach Kirby Smart seemed to spend most of the evening with his mask dangling beneath his nose or down around his neck.

ACC football radio crews calling audibles with their on-field reporters sidelined (journalnow.com; Dell)

More fans are being allowed into football stadiums around the ACC. But one segment of the game-day experience that still can’t get a spot on the field is your favorite school's radio sideline reporter.

For Wake Forest, Dave Goren has been relegated to watching the game from the Marvin “Skeeter” Francis press box with socially distant journalists.

“I miss feeling the game,” said Goren, a 15-year veteran on Wake Forest's Learfield IMG College broadcasts. “And I miss talking to the players in the post-game because that’s where you can get to know them.”

Even as Gov. Roy Cooper's Phase 3 now allows 7% fan capacity in stadiums, guidelines developed by the ACC's COVID-19 medical advisory board for game days deemed radio crew sideline reporters as non-essential. Goren has not been part of Wake Forest's broadcasts this season.

Stan Cotten, in his 24th season as the play-by-play voice for Wake Forest, says there’s an obvious void in broadcasts without Goren on the sidelines. Cotten and analyst Lary Sorensen fill the air time but can’t seek Goren's insight at key moments.

Clemson's Swinney Doesn't Worry About ACC's Perception (SI; Boland)

In a year that has featured a number of oddities, the newest may be the fact that the Atlantic Coast Conference is currently the premiere league in college football.

With the addition of Notre Dame this season, the ACC currently features four teams in the most recent AP Top 25 ranking. That is more than any other conference.

Winds could hit 50 mph in Upstate NY: Better take in those Halloween decorations (PS; $; Coin)

Your pumpkins and gourds should be OK outside, but you might want to let the air out of those inflatable jack-o-lanterns and bring the wreaths inside on Wednesday.

Wind gusts of up to 50 mph are expected Wednesday afternoon in Upstate New York, especially east of Lake Ontario. Those gusts could be strong enough not only to tear down Halloween decorations, but to also knock down branches and trees, causing scattered power outages, the National Weather Service said.

The weather service has issued a hazardous weather outlook for most of Upstate.

“These strong wind gusts may result in a few downed trees and wires,” the weather service’s Binghamton office said. “A few strong to severe thunderstorms are possible with gusty winds and small hail Wednesday afternoon as well.”

50 mph winds, eh? Wouldn't it be nice to have an indoor stadium for the football team to practice in on days like today?

Indeed.

Syracuse has 3. More than any other school in the country, and probably the world.
