Welcome to All Souls' Day!

All Souls' Day commemorates the souls of deceased Christians. It developed out of All Saints' Day, and is associated with that holiday and Halloween. There are a variation of beliefs and practices observed among different churches on the day.

For Catholics, the day is for praying for the souls of those who are dead and in purgatory. In the late tenth or early eleventh century, Saint Odilo of Cluny decided that All Souls' Day would take place after All Saints' Day. All Catholic monasteries that were dependent on the Abbey of Cluny were to observe the day. Monks were to make prayers, alms, and sacrifices for those in purgatory. From here, All Souls' Day spread to other Western churches.

For Anglicans it is an optional holiday, an extension of All Saints' Day, used to remember those who have died in faith, especially relatives. It was not observed much by the Anglican Church during the Reformation, but began being celebrated again by some parishes in the nineteenth century, and was revived even more during World War I, when there was a need to mourn for those who had died in the war.

Babers can't win in 2020, but it's time for QB change (column) (247sports.com; Bailey)

Dino Babers said exactly what the Syracuse football fanbase didn't want to hear after his team's 38-14 loss to Wake Forest on Saturday. The fifth-year head coach stood by redshirt senior quarterback Rex Culpepper and all but dismissed the late-game touchdown drive operated by true freshman JaCobian Morgan.

In attempting to contextualize Morgan's success, Babers likened the possession, capped by Morgan's first career scoring strike, to a 7-on-7 drill. He took one of the few reasons for the Central New York community to keep watching games this year -- a signal-caller who could improve the program -- and scoffed at it.

"I wouldn't put too much stock on that," Babers said. "That's the end of the game. We're running out the clock on ourselves and those guys are giving him those throws. ... That's not like a real football game.

In 2020, Babers has been forced to play a hand that he cannot win with. The face and voice of a program bounding toward its worst campaign since the Greg Robinson era, he is attempting to appeal to each of the groups that he'll need support from in order to win in 2021 and beyond. But it's an impossible task.

The strongest case to play Morgan? SU always needs QB depth (stock watch) (PS; $; Mink)

Syracuse football is 1-6 after a 38-14 loss to Wake Forest on Saturday.

This week’s stock watch takes a look at the players and themes rising and falling heading into the next opponent, an upstart Boston College team that gave top-ranked Clemson all it could handle.

Stock up: QB JaCobian Morgan seeing significant time in the final month of the season

We’re going to double down on the freshman quarterback from Mississippi seeing significant time over the final month of the season.

The best argument for giving Morgan an extensive look over the next four games is it gives the staff a lens into how he’ll fit into the future quarterback picture.

Five Takeaways from Syracuse's Loss to Wake Forest (SI; McAllister)

1. Cooper Lutz Showed Something

Syracuse was without injured running back Sean Tucker in this game. Going into it, I believed he was a key for the offense to have balance. I did not have confidence that Cooper Lutz or Markenzy Pierre would be able to replicate Tucker's production. Lutz proved me wrong. He ran for 81 yards on 15 carries, a solid 5.4 yards per carry. He also had four catches for 25 yards. Lutz displayed good vision and some elusiveness at the second level. The Syracuse offense can work with him as the running back. Tucker is still clearly the best option, but Lutz proved he can play.

2. Tackling Still an Issue

There were several instances where missed tackles kept Wake drives alive. In some cases, multiple missed tackles. It has been an issue at various points this season, but improved a bit last week against Clemson. Syracuse took a step back against Wake Forest. The defense was not all bad, but this was a major issue. If Syracuse is going to get another win this season, they have to figure out how to improve tackling. For the first time, some of those mistakes were not bailed out by turnovers. Syracuse failed to force a turnover for the first time this season.

3. Run Defense Continues Improvement

That said, the run defense overall continued its solid play from last week. Remember, Georgia Tech, Duke and Liberty racked up an average of 325 rushing yards per game against Syracuse. They averaged nearly six yards per carry. Clemson ran for only 150 yards at less than five yards per carry. Wake Forest did put up 188 yards on the ground, but averaged only 3.8 yards per attempt. That is a step forward despite the tackling issues. This shows that there have been adjustments by the coaching staff in order to mitigate the defensive issues against the run. They are working, but can be even better with stronger tackling.

3 takeaways from Syracuse football's 38-14 loss to Wake Forest - The Juice Online (the juice; Biehar)

Syracuse season long woes continued Saturday afternoon in a 38-14 loss to Wake Forest. While it’s clear this is a lost season for the football team, there were still some noteworthy takeaways.

Here are three things we learned from Saturday’s shellacking:

Syracuse’s defense shows promise

The box score shows that Syracuse’s defense allowed 38 points and 438 yards, but a closer look reveals that the Orange defense had a solid outing.

It’s hard to pin blame on a defense that was on the field for 36:14 as opposed to the offense, which was on the field for just 23:46. Rex Culpepper’s two interceptions didn’t help the defense, either. One interception came with 12:32 left in the third quarter and the Orange already trailing 24-7.

Wake Forest’s Gavin Holmes returned that 32 yards for a touchdown to make it 31-7, and the rout was on, with a gassed defense allowing one more score with just over three minutes left in the fourth quarter.

But before the game got out of hand, the defense turned in a solid performance. The Orange got down early 10-0, but SU’s defense forced Wake Forest their first 3-and-out, and on the ensuing drive, Syracuse scored for the first time to make it 10-7.

Three-and-Out: Is it Time to Move On From Rex? (spectrumlocalnews.com; Columbia)

1-6, it’s a hard number to look at and it doesn’t appear to be getting any better.

The schedule isn’t getting any easier either. Louisville, NC State, Boston College and Notre Dame sill remain for the Orange.

So, what is there to look forward to? Well, if we go by what Dino Babers has said in previous comments, then development of younger players is something to keep an eye on… particularly at quarterback.

Freshman QB JaCobian Morgan engineers a scoring drive, capped off by the first TD pass of his career.

Is it time to move on from Rex Culpepper?

The short answer is yes. Which isn’t fun to say because Rex’s story is so awesome. Beating testicular cancer and becoming the starting quarterback of the Orange this year is a great feat. But the truth of the matter is… Rex is not the future of this team. That is JaCobian Morgan and Dillon Markiewicz. The two freshmen will be here well after Rex and Tommy DeVito.

Now, DeVito is more-than-likely to be the SU starter next year, but what does it hurt to get a serious look at one if not both of these young guys, and perhaps, create a competition heading into Spring-ball.

Episode 254- Syracuse Football: Wake Forest Post-Game!

Game Recap: Wake Forest Takes Care of Syracuse, 38-14 (bloggersodear.com; Foochs)

Wake Forest pretty much had this thing from the very beginning. After a 10-0 first quarter, Wake gave up one touchdown but then scored another right before the end of the half, giving the Deacs a 17-7 lead at the half. It was over soon after that, though. After a three and out for Syracuse to start the second half (aided by an awesome PBU from Nick Andersen). Sam Hartman threw an awesome strike downfield on a third and long to a WIDE OPEN Jaquarii Roberson for an 80 yard catch and jaunt to the endzone. On the subsequent play, Rex Culpepper threw a pick six to Wake’s Gavin Holmes (who pulled a muscle running into the end zone; hope he’s alright), and within about two and a half minutes, Wake’s lead went from 17-7 to 31-7. That was pretty much that. Wake’s defense continued to play strong throughout the game (including two more forced turnovers), and the offense had two more sustained drives, one of which led to a touchdown (Kenneth Walker III’s third touchdown of the day) and the other of which led to a turnover on downs when the Deacs went to convert on a 4th and 6 instead of going for a 50+ yard field goal. Between those two drives, Wake ran 23 plays and 12 minutes of game time off the clock. That’s absolutely nuts. Syracuse scored one other touchdown in garbage time in the fourth quarter, going on a 10 play, 80 yard drive against Wake’s reserves.

On the day, Sam Hartman tallied 250 yards and one touchdown on an efficient 19-33 passing. Kenneth Walker III was a monster yet again, tallying 79 yards and three touchdowns on 16 carries for 4.9 YPC. Christian Beal-Smith also did work, adding up 87 yards on 19 carries for a 4.6 YPC average. Wake Forest was 9-18 on third down and 2-4 on fourth (exactly 50% on both, what’re the odds?), and on defense, Wake Forest held Syracuse to a brutal 3-11 on third down and 1-1 on fourth. When you combine that with a +3 takeover margin for the Wake Forest defense, and honestly, Syracuse never stood a chance. It wasn’t a perfect game for Wake Forest per se, but it was pretty darn close. The best way I can describe it is that it was a methodically dominant performance by Wake on the road (though admittedly that detail is a little more of a formality this year than anything). The biggest (and really only) downside to this game for Wake Forest is the fact that Boogie Basham’s TFL streak ended at 23 games,

Axe: Dino Babers out of reasons not to start JaCobian Morgan at QB (PS; $; Axe)

Why should Syracuse football head coach Dino Babers make a change at quarterback?

All you have to do is listen to Babers' own words following Syracuse’s 38-14 loss to Wake Forest to find the answers as to why freshman quarterback JaCobian Morgan (and maybe even fellow freshman Dillon Markiewicz) should get serious reps in Syracuse’s final four games of the 2020 season.

“The one thing that I’m always going to do is I’m going to try to play for a winning season and the best way to have a winning season is to have as many upperclassmen as you can because those guys care about winning more than anyone else."

Miami football clearly third best team in ACC (caneswarning.com; Rubenstein)

The Miami football team is clearly at least the third-best team in the ACC behind Clemson and Notre Dame following the loss by North Carolina at Virginia Saturday.

The upset by Virginia over North Carolina on Saturday night cemented the Miami football team as the third-best in the ACC. North Carolina lost for the second time in the last three weeks. The Tar Heels lost to Florida State and the Cavaliers who Miami has already defeated this season.

Miami won 52-10 against Florida State and defeated Virginia 19-14. Florida State beat UNC 31-28 two weeks ago and lost 44-41 to Virginia Saturday. The Cavaliers and Seminoles are the only common opponents Miami and North Carolina have played this season. Both teams play Wake Forest this month.

Miami is scheduled to play North Carolina State and Virginia Tech who North Carolina has already defeated. None of the teams the Hurricanes have defeated this season are on the Tar Heels remaining schedule. Miami is the only one-loss team in the ACC. Clemson and Notre Dame head to their Saturday showdown undefeated.

Evaluating Clemson QB D.J. Uiagalelei's game vs. Boston College | College Football Final

ACC Football Recap: Showdown Set Between Undefeated Clemson and Notre Dame (pittsburghsportsnow.com; Vukovcan)

While at times it looked to be in jeopardy, the showdown is now set for next Saturday between two unbeaten ACC teams as No. 1 Clemson and No. 4 Notre Dame face off.

Clemson will have to beat Notre Dame without their best player as Dabo Swinney announced after their win over Boston College that quarterback Trevor Lawrence wouldn’t be cleared in time from his COVID-19 diagnosis and won’t be in uniform for Clemson.

Regardless, that’s still the college football game of the weekend and the way things are looking, those two programs could be meeting again in December for the ACC Championship.

Here’s a recap of Saturday’s ACC results plus an updated look at the conference standings.

#1 Clemson 34 – Boston College 28:
Clemson has another star quarterback on their roster as DJ Uiagalelei stepped in for Lawrence and rallied the Tigers from an 18-point first half deficit to down Boston College. Uiagalelei threw for 342 yards and two touchdowns along with running for a 30 yard touchdown. The other headline from the game was Clemson running back Travis Etienne became the ACC’s all-time leading rusher, passing NC State’s Ted Brown (4,602 yards). Clemson was also missing starting linebackers James Skalski and Mike Jones Jr., who were sitting out with injuries. In the defeat, Boston College quarterback Phil Jurkovec was 12/24 with 204 yards and 2 TD passes.

Wake Forest 38 – Syracuse 14:
Wake Forest picked up their 4th win of the season by completely dominating Syracuse on the road by the score of 38-14. The rushing tandem of Christian Beal-Smith and Kenneth Walker III led the Deacons with each averaging close to 5 yards per carry. Beal-Smith finished the game with 19 carries for 87 yards and Walker rushed 16 times for 79 yards and three TD’s. Wake Forest quarterback Sam Hartman finished the game 19-33 for 250 yards and a score. This is Wake Forest’s fourth consecutive win after opening the season with loses to Clemson (37-13) and NC State (45-42).

From Southern Pigskin's Hot Read: "Uiagalelei, Etienne Star as Tigers Rally"

After an impressive start by a good Boston College team, Clemson came back from an 18-point deficit to win, 34-28. Uiagalelei starred in relief of Trevor Lawrence, while Travis Etienne became the ACC's all-time leading rusher with 4,644 career yards.
From NBC Sports: "Notre Dame welcomes ‘Clemson Week’"

The 31-13 Irish win at Georgia Tech was needed for the week to deserve a capital W. To a lesser, but similar, extent, the No. 1 Tigers also needed to beat Boston College on Saturday... They won, despite some drama. Thus, it’s Clemson Week...

Last week we asked the question whether there was a return to normal. Perhaps we asked too soon. There’s not a whole lot that qualifies as normal this season with perhaps one exception. For years we’ve known it was either Alabama or Clemson at No. 1. With this week’s AP voters almost splitting their First Place Votes (FPV) between the two we wonder if some are losing their faith in the Tigers.

With several weekends of less than powerful statements by the Clemson defense the FPV split between the Tigers and Crimson Tide is now 33-29. Amazingly enough there wasn’t a single vote for Ohio State even though the Buckeyes have had two good showings so far.

Then, let’s take a quick look at the the latest ESPN Football Power Index (FPI) where Clemson’s shot at making the national championship is less than stellar.

Losing Faith

The Tigers have a 35.4% chance of making the playoffs and a paltry 15.8% chance of winning the national title.

  • #1 Ohio State
  • #2 Alabama
  • #3 Clemson
  • #4 Wisconsin
  • #5 Georgia

Apartment, office building proposed for Syracuse’s Franklin Square (PS; $; Moriarty)

A fast-growing Syracuse business plans to construct a mixed-use building in Franklin Square that will contain 30 market-rate apartments and more office space for the company.

Rapid Response Monitoring Services has applied to the Syracuse Planning Commission for site plan approval for a three-story building planned for 151-199 Solar St.

The building would be built on a vacant lot at the southwest corner of Solar and West Division streets. It would face Solar Street, with 107 parking spaces behind the building along West Division Street.

The first floor would contain 18,160 square feet of office space for Rapid Response, while the second and third floors would contain apartments.

The building’s facade would consist of brick and stone, with simulated historic double-hung steel sash windows.
