Welcome to Valentine's Day!

Valentine's Day originated as a Western Christian feast day honoring an early Saint named Valentine. It is still an official feast in some denominations, although the day was removed from the Catholic General Roman Calendar because not much information was known about the Saint. The day is now also a cultural and commercial holiday centered around romance and love. It is celebrated in many places around the globe, although it is not a public holiday. Symbols associated with the day are the heart-shaped outline, doves, and the figure of a winged Cupid.

2023 Rookie Profile: Sean Tucker, RB Syracuse - Dynasty Nerds (dynastynerds.com; Cooper)

Sean Tucker was a 3-star recruit at running back coming out of high school. A converted track star, he was only listed at 186 pounds coming into his freshman year at Syracuse, and he wasn’t expected to be an impact player in his first season.

However, injuries and COVID-19 opt-outs led to opportunity, and he quite literally ran with it. Producing over 700 total yards as a true freshman earned him a bell-cow role as a sophomore. He bulked up without losing any of his track speed. As a result, he produced over 1,700 total yards and 14 TDs in his second season.

Along with that massive production came a lot of exciting traits on tape and quite a bit of NFL buzz. Unfortunately, he got a new offensive coordinator in his final collegiate season. He wasn’t quite as successful in the new system. Although it felt like a letdown compared to his previous season, in reality, it was still a great year. He still posted over 1,300 yards and caught almost twice as many passes in the new offense. The hype has faded quite a bit on Tucker this year, but I still believe in him as a prospect. Let’s get into some of his strengths and weaknesses.

JMA Dome renovations: First look at Miron Victory Court renderings (TNIAAM; Ostrowski)

The longtime home of Syracuse Orange football, basketball and lacrosse has received major upgrades over the last few years and will continue to add more in the next stages of its massive renovation project.

One of those additions is a new building that would connect the Dome to the adjacent Barnes Center at the Arch. Thanks to this proposal made by SU to the City of Syracuse’s Zoning Administration Office, we have our first look at what that could look like.

The Miron Victory Court - described as “an enclosed pedestrian thruway” - would run entirely from the northeast to the southeast end of the Dome. The structure would add two enclosed entrances to the Dome, expand its footprint, and help to address the issue of narrow concourses. These images were released by the Syracuse Landmark Preservation Board following a meeting discussing the project earlier this month.

Turning Pro Football Into a Dominant Force | Colgate Magazine (colgate.edu; Aquije)

Howard Katz ’71 is known as the NFL scheduling guru.

For his work as senior vice president of broadcasting and media operations with the NFL, Katz received the 2022 Pete Rozelle Radio-Television Award, which is presented by the Pro Football Hall of Fame each year to recognize exceptional contributions to radio and TV in football.

Katz oversees a department that develops the league’s schedule and selects games for prime time. In the 2021–22 season, 24 of the top 25 broadcasts for national ratings were NFL games, and much of the credit is given to Katz.

“Howard has been sneaking into your homes for 40 years, and you haven’t known it,” Dick Ebersol, former chairman of NBC Sports and longtime friend, said when Katz was inducted into the New Jersey Hall of Fame. (Katz grew up in Livingston, N.J.)

At Colgate, the economics major wasn’t thinking of a career in television; Katz planned to be a lawyer. But an unexpected event spun his life in a different direction — taking him to places like ABC Sports and ESPN before he joined the NFL and turned pro football into a dominant force in American TV.

Sports media was a student hobby for Katz, who managed the sports content for WRCU and Colgate News. He also did the play-by-play for Colgate football and basketball.

When Katz was a junior, Colgate hosted the college hockey championships in Syracuse. He was an assistant to the University’s sports information director, who was tasked with overseeing the press room for the tournament. A couple of days before the tournament, the director’s wife gave birth to their first child, causing the director to miss the event.

Katz was left in charge. He managed the press room on his own and did such an exemplary job that his work caught the attention of others. Unbeknownst to Katz, a year later, the sports information director at Syracuse University recommended him for a job with ABC Sports. Katz interviewed and was offered a position as a production assistant.

“It seemed like something that would be interesting and fun,” says Katz, who, at the time, figured he could work at ABC Sports for a year or two and then move on to law school.

He ended up spending three years at ABC Sports, working his way up to associate producer. Afterward, Katz joined Trans World International (TWI), where he was exposed to different aspects of the TV business. Following nearly a decade at TWI, he became the president of Ohlmeyer Communications Company (OCC). The man who hired him was Sports Broadcasting Hall of Famer Don Ohlmeyer, who knew Katz from their days together at ABC Sports.

Jeff Brohm’s Contract–How it compares to UofL’s personnel and the ACC (BRL; Powell)

Despite turning down the head coaching position at his alma mater in November 2018, Jeff Brohm decided it was finally time to come home to the University of Louisville. In December 2022, Brohm left Purdue University and signed a six-year, $36 million deal with UofL to become their next Head Football Coach.

The former Trinity standout previously played quarterback at the University of Louisville for Head Coach Howard Schnellenberger from 1989-1993. He then returned to UofL in 2003 and spent the next six years there as an assistant coach under Bobby Petrino and Steve Kragthorpe.

In 2014, Brohm went on to become the Head Football Coach at Western Kentucky, leading the Hilltoppers to 30 wins and just 10 losses during his three seasons at the helm. In 2017, he accepted the head coaching position at Purdue University, and managed to breathe life into a program that had not won more than three games in a season since 2012.

While in West Lafayette, he managed to reach a bowl game in four of his six seasons with the Boilermakers. His teams at Purdue also earned three victories over top 5 teams, a feat the University of Louisville has not managed to do once since 2016. Jeff Brohm would cap off his career at Purdue being crowned Big Ten West champions in 2022.

He now looks to bring excitement and enthusiasm back to a Louisville football program that has been stuck in mediocrity since the departure of Lamar Jackson in 2017.

Here we will take a closer look at Jeff Brohm’s contract and how it compares to other coaches in Louisville football history, and how it compares to other coaches in the Atlantic Coast Conference.

Base Salary

Jeff Brohm will earn a base salary of $5 million dollars over six years, which increases every year by $100,000. The list below shows the former Louisville quarterback’s annual salary from 2023-2028.

Syracuse’s round hotel - part of the skyline for decades - listed for sale at auction (PS; $; Hayes)

Syracuse’s round hotel — a part of the city’s skyline since 1969 — is up for sale, according to an online auction site.

The Crowne Plaza, 701 E. Genessee St., is listed for auction on a digital real-estate marketplace called LoopNet. The listing was created Feb. 6.

The 277-bed hotel, which became a Crowne Plaza in 2010, is just a few blocks east of the county’s 200,000-square-foot convention center complex and a few blocks from University Hill, home to Syracuse University and three hospitals.

The 20-story hotel is well known in Syracuse for its unique round shape that’s clearly visible from I-81 and I-690.

The hotel previously changed hands in 2016, when a Florida company bought the property for $15.2 million. The hotel continued to operate as a Crowne Plaza.

We stayed there in September of 2011 for the Thursday night opener against Wake Forest. Wake stayed at the hotel as well. There were elevator issues and they were worried about getting to the Dome on time.

I had a good experience there last summer in August. Enjoyed my stay and it was an easy walk to Armory Square.
