Top QB Recruit Alin Edouard Will Re-Join Program for This Season (PS; Bailey)

More than two weeks into preseason camp, Syracuse freshman quarterback Alin Edouard is still home in Miami dealing with what SU head coach Scott Shafer has called a family issue.

On Monday, Shafer said that while there is still no timeline for Edouard's arrival, he has no doubts that the highly touted signal caller will re-join the program for the start of the fall semester.

"Hell yeah, he's coming," Shafer said. "We've got to get him in before school starts.

"Whenever the timing is right for him and his family, he'll be here. We'll stay behind him all the way."

With the first day of classes one week away, it seems Edouard should be back in Syracuse soon. He participated in summer workouts, drawing rave reviews from starting quarterback Terrel Hunt, but has not flown back from Miami since then.

Syracuse Orange Season Preview (espn; Fortuna)

...
Best-case scenario for 2014: Hunt evolves as a passer and as a runner, orchestrating an offense that has made it known it would like to push the tempo in 2014. Unlike last year, the Orange enter the season knowing who their No. 1 quarterback is, and that proves beneficial as they race out to an early 3-0 start. The front seven steps up and Syracuse is able to steal a win during a tough three-game stretch against Notre Dame, Louisville and Florida State, emerging on the other end ready to tackle a final month that concludes with road contests at former Big East foes Pitt and BC. Syracuse improves in Shafer's second season, hitting his goal of at least eight wins, and the future looks bright for a program looking to emerge as a legitimate No. 3 team in a top-heavy Atlantic division behind FSU and Clemson.

Worst-case scenario for 2014: Hunt struggles to command the offense with more responsibility, the defense can't seem to make up for the loss of Bromley up front and the Orange get eaten alive by a tough schedule. A trip to Wake Forest provides a reprieve during a five-game stretch that features the aforementioned teams above plus Clemson on the other end. No matter, though, as a physically beaten team staggers into the final month with only NC State as a winnable game. Syracuse wins four games, its worst season since Doug Marrone's inaugural 2009 campaign.

They said it: "I was happy with the way we finished the season. I thought both Terrel [Hunt] and the wide receivers did a nice job finishing up with the victory over Minnesota in the Texas Bowl, but we need to take it to the next level to get to the next level. We're always going to really work hard to run the football. I believe in running the football, I believe in stopping the run. I think that's where it starts with our philosophy. But in this day and age, you've got to be able to open it up, and we put the onus on our passing game, our wide receivers, to take their game up." -- Shafer, on the passing game becoming more explosive

Say It Ain't So Jerry. CBS Bowl Projections Leave Syracuse With No Bid (PS; Carlson)

Syracuse's modern-day football tradition includes the Carrier Dome, Varsity Pizza and polishing up a good ol' chip on the shoulder.

Orange fans planning to play the national disrespect card this season need look no further than CBS' bowl projections to get into regular-season form. Jerry Palm's bowl bracketology has Syracuse failing to reach a bowl game for the first time in three years.

Adding further insult to the Orange, both Boston College and North Carolina State are projected to qualify for postseason games. Two weeks ago, CBS' experts predicted the Orange to finish anywhere from fourth to sixth in the Atlantic Division of the ACC.

H Back Brisley Estime is Primed for a Break Out Season

Why SU Football Will Finish 2014 with a 5-7 Record (TNIAAM; Cassillo)

Hey, you guys remember this series for the last two years, right? TNIAAM's football staff is going to toss out a bunch of scenarios for you. You might agree with some. You'll probably disagree with some too. Today's my day and I'm going with the insanely negative 5-7. Might as well start yelling at me now before reading the rest of this piece...

Week-by-Week: Where I tell you what Syracuse does each week in order to get themselves a 5-7 record, therefore messing up a third straight trip to a bowl.

Villanova Wildcats: Syracuse comes out with minimal energy and finds themselves down 14-13 at the half. Following a spirited lecture by Scott Shafer at halftime, the team puts it together for the final 30 minutes and grabs a 30-21 win. Trying not to get antsy about what a close score like that could mean, Orange chalk it up to summer rust... W (1-0) (0-0)

at Central Michigan Chippewas: After a season in which CMU quarterback Cooper Rush took a ton of sacks, he begins 2014 as well-equipped as any player to deal with Syracuse's blitzing defense. Early on, he burns the Orange defense for a couple touchdown passes, putting SU on its heels and out of its element. Syracuse's Terrel Hunt is able to rally the team for a 34-20 lead, but a late run by the Chippewas almost ties things up. SU gets out 34-27. Worry is ratcheted up a notch. W (2-0) (0-0)

Maryland Terrapins: Finally able to stay healthy, Maryland starts 3-0 for the second straight season, and comes into the Carrier Dome looking to extend that record to 4-0. They mange to do it with ease, unfortunately. With Stefon Diggs and Deon Long actually on the field, the team's speed takes advantage of the Dome's artificial turf and SU's questionable secondary, and the game is never in question. The Terps win, 48-20. Syracuse is finally a "very bad football team" against Maryland. L (2-1) (0-0)

NCAA Football Preview - Syracuse Orange (ledger-enquirer; Haynes)

...
2014 ANALYSIS:

OFFENSE: - The Orange return eight starters on the offensive side of the ball, led by junior quarterback Terrel Hunt, who took over the reins of the team around week 4 a year ago. A dual threat with the ability to win with his arm or legs, Hunt finished 2013 having completed 61.2 percent of his passes, for 1,638 yards and 10 touchdowns, while ranking second on the team in rushing (500 yards) with seven more scores.

Gone is leading rusher Jerome Smith (914 yards, 12 TDs), but senior Prince- Tyson Gulley (456 yards, four TDs) will take on a bigger role this time around and a deep pool of runners like Adonis Ameen-Moore and George Morris should keep the backfield fresh.

As far as the passing game, Hunt has the luxury of the top two receivers returning to the fold in Ashton Broyld (6-3, 223) and Jarrod West (6-2, 209). Both big targets, Broyld led the team with 52 catches, for 452 yards in 2013, while West added 26 catches, for 397 yards and one TD. Sophomore speedster Brisly Estime (5-9, 172) could become a favorite target as well.

An improved passing game is something Shafer is counting on this season.

Coach P Gets a Gatorade Bath After SU Beat Kansas State in the Insight.com Bowl in 2001. It marks the last time Syracuse played a game as a team in the Top 25

When Will Syracuse Return to the Top 25? (PS; Axe)

The annual release of the Associated Press college football Top 25 has become an undesired reminder for Syracuse football fans.

The routine goes like this.

The poll comes out.

SU fans glance at the poll with a faint hope they have received a vote or two in the "others receiving votes" category.

Nothing.

Then the thought occurs to them.

Walk-On DB Alex Schoen Has Left the Team for Financial Reasons

SU Adds New Walk-On From FM High School (PS; Mink)

Syracuse added a new walk-on to the program in linebacker Nate Kadah.

Kadah played high school football with coach Scott Shafer's son, Wolf, at Fayetteville-Manlius before enrolling at Le Moyne College.

"Loved football," Shafer said. "Had to endure some tough times at home, lost his dad, a great man, and went to Le Moyne. Probably could have gone anywhere he wanted academically, decided to go to Le Moyne to be close, help his mom get through a tough year and he reached out and said, 'I sure would love to play football again.' I said, 'Why don't you come on over?'

Walk-Ons Schoen and Jakubowski Leave the Team (PS; Mink)

A second walk-on player has left the Syracuse football program in recent days.

Alex Schoen, a sophomore defensive back from Short Hills, N.J., has left the team, according to assistant athletic director for communications Sue Edson.

Freshman punter Evan Jakubowski, from Wheaton, Ill., also recently left the team.

Schoen is still enrolled at Syracuse, according to the university directory. Jakubowski is not, and his Facebook profile indicates he is studying at Miami (Ohio), one of the schools he considered throughout the recruiting process.

Duke WR Jamison Crowder is an AA Candidate at WR

6 Impact Receivers in the ACC for 2014 Season (PS; Stevens)

Tyler Boyd, Pittsburgh: In any other year, Boyd would have been an obvious ACC rookie of the year winner. Alas, his 1,174 yards and seven touchdowns receiving coincided with Florida State quarterback Jameis Winston's monster debut.

Boyd scored his touchdowns early, but was still effective even after Devin Street was hurt late in the season. Boyd had 27 catches for 353 yards in the Panthers' last three games, effectively answering how well he could handle extra attention.

Jamison Crowder, Duke: It will be difficult to top last year's 108 receptions, an ACC record, but Crowder should again be one of the league's best wideouts. He's a major part of Duke's offense, a unit that might find in plenty of barnburners if the loss of linebacker Kelby Brown proves as damaging to the Blue Devils' defense as some suspect it might.

I see in the ESPN college game they dont give AB as a choice for a SU rcvr but they do have flemming.

I have to think that was done to give a senior player some credit and honor...
