AJ Long Lacks Not for Confidence

Syracuse Quarterback AJ Long Prepares for Debut vs Florida State: 'This is Just the Opening Passage' (PS; Mink)

It has become A.J. Long's insignia since last year, a $120 gift from his father that rewarded him for following through on a goal to graduate high school early and getting a jump start on his college career.

And Ace Long, who imposed just one caveat — it had to be done on an area of his body that wouldn't turn off prospective employers — basically gave his son a crooked look when told he wanted a Syracuse logo tattooed on his left bicep.

What if you don't stay? What if it's not what you expect or hope for?

Such a sentiment seems trivial two days before Syracuse hosts No. 1 Florida State at noon at the Carrier Dome, where Long is expected to make his college football debut. It will be a coronation for one of the faces of the freshman class, but in many ways it might only mark the first step toward the future.

Syracuse Fans Should Shift Focus to Basketball (sujuiceonline.com; Marcus)

Rachel Marcus speaks for the fair weather fans...

I could write this column and preview Syracuse’s upcoming football game against the behemoth that is Florida State. The nation’s No. 1 team is the defending national champs, and features last year’s Heisman trophy winner and one of the best players in the nation in quarterback Jameis Winston. The 2014 Seminoles may not be as good as last year’s squad, but they’re still loaded.

But…SU is playing a backup QB and has someone new calling the plays. Saying the game may not be an enjoyable one for SU fans is an understatement.

And, at this point in the year, I’ve already spoken too much about football. It’s October. In certain regions of the country, that means playoff baseball. In other places, it means the NFL and college football.

In Syracuse, the month of October not only represents the fall descent into winter, but also the sunrise of the upcoming basketball season and the sunset of the football season.

For the month of September, we act interested, and sort of are interested, in the football team. There are still traces of summer and a new season is fresh. The Dome is all pigskin, a win or two may be on the record and college football is all around.

Hope AJ is ready. FSU is a tough team to get your first taste of game action against.

Coming atcha, kid.

No doubt. I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do on the field. Gotta find a way to 4 more. Maybe Long is the spark.

This is the #1 problem the program faces Oh Lord :(

300 lb RF Ryan Hoefeld will start at center for FSU Saturday replacing injured starter Barron. Hoefeld played in the FSU Wake game after Barron was injured.

There's a real chance that FSU's offense implodes on itself. New center, allowing a ton of sacks, and their #2 QB is a WR. One good LB blitz away from disaster. Not saying we still won't lose - but man - our luck is the worst. They might be the weakest #1 to ever play in the dome - and we're trotting out a pair of freshman QB's and a new OC.

Sigh.

Nonsense. The biggest problem this program faces is a LACK OF WINS. WINNING solves all problems.
Actually, it doesn't, IMO. See all the articles out there about all the schools that are having attendance (esp. student attendance) issues. Latest one I saw was about Michigan St. And they seem to be doing pretty well lately.

Shafer says he's not concerned about past issues. Team is "buttoned up" and focused moving forward united.

Shafer deferred all injury information to the ACC-mandated report that will come out tonight.

A stern Shafer after a few George questions: "It's not in the best interest of this team to look backward, so I won't."

Shafer said Geroge McDonald's role in recruiting through the rest of the season will be the "same as if always has."

Shafer said he hasn't spoken about the Nebraska upset to the team. Rather, he showed the team tape from NCAA upsets in the last 3 games.

Shafer preached a "Why not us?" mentality to the team entering its matchup with No. 1 Florida State.

Shafer said that on every 1st-and-10, the offense wants to get four yards. Situational percentages an emphasis in practice.

Shafer: "John (Raymon) is blessed with great genetics. He does have freakish genetics."

Shafer said Raymon's injured leg tested better than his non-injured one when Denny Kellington cleared him to play.

Shafer said AJ Long's anticipation in improving. One of the reasons he's becoming more efficient.

Shafer: "We still have about a dozen kids out." ACC-mandated report issued after practice two days prior to game (tonight around 7:00).

Shafer: "I'm done answering questions (on offensive coordinator change). It's not in the best interest of this football team going forward."

Continues to sound as though two quarterbacks will focus on parts of gameplan that suit their games and platoon vs. FSU at least.

Shafer on McDonald recruiting: "The same as he always has. He's one of the best recruiters in the country... I've been pleased w/response."

You make really good points. I haven't felt this good about playing a #1 team at the dome since... Well, ever. Winston is human. He's looked like crap this season. They have a ton of injuries. Offense be damned, the defense will be the key in this one. We know Estime and Broyld at day to day, any updates?

Shafer .. we are preparing for FSU...we are preparing for FSU...we are preparing for FSU...we are preparing for FSU...we are preparing for FSU...we are preparing for FSU...

is it just me or does that OL in the top pic with AJ look like Jeremy has come out of retirement? Go Jeremy go!
