George McDonald Played WR at Illinois

NC State Hires George McDonald to Coach WRs (backingthepack.com; Wolf)

Dave Doeren is making a minor change to his coaching staff, replacing wide receivers coach Frisman Jackson with George McDonald, who worked in that same role at Syracuse. McDonald also spent time as the Orange offensive coordinator this season before gettingdemoted to position coach.

Why was McDonald demoted from OC to WR coach at Syracuse? You would have to ask head coach Scott Shafer. Syracuse was coming off a six-point effort against Louisville at that stage of the season, though the Orange would have hit double digits if a certain individual caught the dadgum football in the hotdanged scorin' zone. Syracuse went 1-6 after McDonald's demotion.

McDonald was hired by Syracuse from Arkansas prior to the 2013 season. He did not take his demotion well. He was brought on board by Shafer as offensive coordinator and associate head coach, so yeah. Nobody in that situation's going to take a demotion well.

"If I would've known I was only going to get 18 games to be offensive coordinator, I would've stayed at the University of Arkansas," McDonald said on Tuesday night. "I would've never came here."

McDonald quickly apologized for that remark, but the writing was obviously on the wall--he wanted out. Dave Doeren offered him an eject button and he took it.

NCAA Will Reimburse Athletes' Families for Travel (PS; AP)

The College Football Playoff will help pay for the parents and guardians of Ohio State and Oregon football players to travel to the national championship game in North Texas on Monday.

The NCAA granted a waiver Tuesday that allows the College Football Playoff to provide a reimbursement of up to $1,250 per parent or guardian that will cover hotel accommodations, travel and meals.

"This will really help because parents really want to go out and see their kids play," said Ohio State safety Von Bell, who is from Rossville, Georgia. "They make a lot of sacrifices and there's a lot of money spent. Traveling from the South, because they come up here for every game, is a lot. The gas and everything. It's really a blessing to hear that."

Ohio State played last week at the Sugar Bowl in New Orleans in the first College Football Playoff semifinals. Oregon played at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California.

The NCAA also announced it will provide a similar reimbursement to the families of athletes who compete in the men's and women's basketball Final Fours as part of a pilot program.

Syracuse making an announcement at 3 p.m. regarding indoor practice facility. I wonder what it will be.

I would venture a guess that it has to do with naming the building.

Syracuse Names Indoor Facility the Ensley Athletic Center
Latest athletic facility named for three-sport star Cliff Ensley following multi-million dollar gift
Syracuse University will name the new indoor practice facility the "Ensley Athletic Center," on behalf of Cliff Ensley, a walk-on who earned a football scholarship and became a three-sport standout at Syracuse in the late 1960's. Ensley's multi-million dollar gift, combined with previously announced major gifts from Dick and Jean Thompson and others to be announced later this year, made the construction of the 87,000 square-foot practice facility possible. The facility also includes a 7,600 square-foot entry pavilion which houses meeting space and restrooms.

Ensley earned the 1969 Syracuse Athlete of the Year award, an honor that had previously been given to Jim Brown, Larry Csonka, Floyd Little, Ernie Davis and Dave Bing. Ensley is the last three-sport letter-winner for the Orange, earning honors in football, lacrosse and wrestling. A defensive back, Ensley set interception and special teams records for the football team and was a team co-captain and Most Valuable Player as a defenseman for the 1969 lacrosse squad.

"To have an individual who walked-on at Syracuse, and through hard work and determination became one of our great student-athletes – and competed in three different sports, give the lead gift on this building is wonderfully fitting," said Director of Athletics Dr. Daryl Gross. "The Ensley Athletic Center is where thousands of student-athletes will work tirelessly to become the very best they can be and reach their fullest potential. Cliff is a living example of that – excelling in sports, business and life."

Ensley, who resides in New Jersey, is the founder and CEO of Leisure Merchandising Corporation. His wife, Sue, serves as the Executive Vice President. He is the chairman of the Board of Directors of the Travel Goods Association, the national organization representing manufacturers, distributors, retailers, promoters, sales representatives and suppliers of luggage and travel products.

The Ensley Athletic Center official grand opening will occur later this year, however several Syracuse teams are currently using the building in preparation for the 2015 seasons, and football players will begin individual workouts when University classes start next week and for Spring practice that will begin in February.

The Ensley Athletic Center took seven months to construct, and is the latest major investment in the Syracuse Football program's facilities. Previously, the football program unveiled renovated locker rooms, theater, training facilities and cafeteria. In addition, the Hall of Fame and student-athlete lounge were also renovated. In the coming months, the football program will renovate offices and meeting spaces for student-athletes.
