Hofstra / Vermont and Yale Scrimmages

Sorry is this real? Are we really to believe Ivy League teams don’t pick up a stick until February? Aren't there captains practices and aren’t those not so different from “real practices”? This tweet seems inappropriate for an official account to put out.

There are definitely Captain's practices

Definitely promising considering last years performance. Do wonder how long they played starters for. Giving up seven first quarter goals is not great but good to see the team battle back.

I'm sure they did full on starters for three quarters at the very least. This tends to be a serious scrimmage given how close it is to the start of the season.

Ivy Schools don't start "official" practice until Feb 1.

Think post was being facetious but there is truth in that there are no formal practice under coaches. As Powell said, they do hold plenty of captain practices and their leadership is strong. They are always sharp on offense from day one.

Starters will go 3q at least maybe even into 4q given close score. Believe they played 5q last year which allowed Cuse to dress up loss by dominating last qtr with subs after being down 17-6 after 3q

Yale is a top four team .12-11 after 3q is alot better than 17-6 but shows that squad still has some strides to make FF weekend .

Hearing many more positives than negatives. Issue early was Cuse had too many turnovers that led to several broken plays that Yale scored on and our transition D was just so so but close defenders is settled D actually won their individual matchups agaisnt their attack which is amongst the best . On offense, ball moved well and Cuse would have put up several more if Starr was not on. Cook looked terrific and our fogos did very well agaisnt TD . Very reassuring.

Biggest story of the game came at the Faceoff X, where Jacob Phaup not only held his own against TD Ierlan -the best FO in the nation - but actually won the matchup. Phaup said he has a list of the top 16 FO guys in the NCAA - highlighted at the top was Ierlan.

SU’s first line attack looked very strong. Griffin Cook tallied a cool 4 goals, and after being held scoreless vs. Vermont a week ago, Chase Scanlan tallied a pair of goals. Scanlan said he dealt with a small ankle problem vs. VT, but looked and felt 100% today

Drake Porter started slowly, but picked up his form in the second & third quarters. Luke Strang looked excellent as the backup, so there should be no problems for ‘Cuse in net this year.

In the end, outside of a 7-1 Yale run at the end of the first quarter, Syracuse looked all the part of one of the top teams in the nation. The 18-14 score line is a little flattering, but this team can go with anyone, anywhere, anytime.

Final Attacking stats from @CuseMLAX’s scrimmage with Yale. G. Cook: 5 Points (3 Goals, 2 Ast) C. Scanlan: 5 Points (2 Goals, 3 Ast) O. Seebold: 4 Points (2 Goals, 2 Ast) S. Rehfuss: 3 Points (2 Goals, 1 Ast) The first line Midfield registered just 2 points.

It may be Groundhogs Day, but in the Ensley Athletic Center on Sunday afternoon, two teams with preseason top-10 rankings and Memorial Day aspirations battled in a closed scrimmage that had a late spring feel.

No. 8 Syracuse defeated No. 3 Yale 18-14 behind a strong performance from the Orange attack unit. The teams reset scores at the end of each quarter, but the two teams played mostly starters through three quarters in a tightly contested matchup.

Griffin Cook led the scoring with a hat trick and three assists, while Chase Scanlan also registered five points (2-3) and Stephen Rehfuss (2-1) chipped in three more as the starting attack combined for 13 points in three quarters of action. Owen Seebold came off the bench to score twice and add two assists as well.

Additionally, Jacob Buttermore (2-0), Andrew Kim (1-0), Brenan Curry (1-0), Jamie Trimboli (0-1), Peter Dearth (1-0), Andrew Helmer (1-0), Mikey Berkman (1-0) and Matt Magnan (1-0) also got into the scoring mix.

One of the more impressive numbers on the day was the 'Cuse faceoff unit combining to go 17-of-36 against TD Ierlan and company. Ierlan, one of the best faceoff men in NCAA history, managed to win only 50-percent of his restarts, while Jakob Phaup was SU's best on the day, going 11-of-18.

I think as others have noted, outside of the 7 goal first this was an excellent outcome for SU. Most importantly I didnt hear anything about injuries and the Phaup news is beyond encouraging. Still things to work on for sure but the early returns are as good as we could have expected and not to toot my own horn but I've been telling this board about Cook for probably 4 or 5 years now, look out kid is ready to bust out. Need to try and keep Phaup relatively healthy and find the right combo at close but this team is definitely on the right track.

Coming into season, three largest questions for me were cook and refusss taking next step, the two open cd spots and play vs the premier fogos. Appears all are being answered well

Agreed Jeremy. The emergence of Cook in these 3 spring scrimmages has been impressive. He never looked comfortable at midfield last year and he had limited runs at attack where he showed promise. Coming into the fall, he was my pick for the 3rd attack spot. His continued development will take pressure off of Rehfuss from a dodging standpoint. Also, very pleased with Phaup's results, 61% against Yale is outstanding.
