Minnesota hiring Nick Monroe

Read the interview with Nick closely. Focus on his answer about being passed over for the DC position at SU.
His answer, non direct but with huge lines is indicative that being passed over was definitely a major part of his decision. Im not saying he still doesn’t leave BUT. If he would have been named DC at SU he would be making 800k or so. In addition he would have the title of DC .
Instead he was left with an assistant title, less money, and not even
The title of Co-dc.
My two cents. IF he had been elevated at the same time, PRE bowl game as our DC Minnesota doesn’t even offer him as there is no way or almost no way He leaves a DC title at SU for a CO DC title at Minneapolis. Especially since the DC is a young guy who isnt leaving soon.
If you follow a natural coaching progression the only way Nick becomes a DC and stays in Minneapolis is if his friend takes another job.
Otherwise Nick will have to move away from Minnesota in order to take a DC job.

I firmly believe Nick stays if he had been named DC prior to the bowl game.
Dino is in win now mode. Not time to break in a first time dc.

recruiting fallout is a tomorrow problem

Let’s not forget. Losing Monroe we lost a recruiting specialist, only. Is that a big deal, absolutely. But this idea we should have promoted him to DC to keep him is baffling. We hired an absolute sure thing for DC. What else do you want. We were supposed to hire a guy who’s completely unproven as a DC by a coach who’s never promoted him before. It makes no sense.

I agree on hiring Long, but as far never being promoted, Monroe was named defensive passing game coordinator last February.

I meant a promotion to DC. I should have been more clear what I meant by promotion. Or Co-DC even.

Even Uncle Luke is asking him where he is going

Exactly. Having 2 first time coordinators is a huge gamble, especially for someone needing to win now.

This is what happens when you don't promote guys.

If we didn't rally against BC (still would have played a bowl game we may have won) is there any chance White is HC with Beck and Monroe OC and DC?

Are we better off?

Any chance? Yes. Better off Yes i would think so. But there was the buyout.

No. Not a chance. 1) White was gone. 2) Dino wasn’t going anywhere. 3) I really like White and he did a great job at SU, but if he is viewed as a potential HC why did he leave for a DC position and not a HC spot?

Ask yourself this, how were we able to replace White so quickly with Long but it takes an extended period of time to replace Monroe or Beck (after he replaced Anae)?

All three eventually left for family reasons.

It’s gonna be a long offseason but it’s time to move on.

Nick worked his butt off for this opportunity and I'm very happy for him, he's earned it.

As for replacing them SUdad...my best guess is that it'll happen after the Feb signing day.

well does he wanna come home or close to home to be near family cuz that's what's important they all say, not the $, then change ones mind when the big $ offer comes leaving said family? Not saying that's necessarily bad as I'd likely do it too for the $ we're talking about, but when hired they should all skip the parts about how family was the main driver, dream job, etc. Just shut up, do it and count their $
Because every decision everyone makes can only be about one thing, right?

I consider many things when making a major life decision and money hasn't always been the top factor. I suspect Monroe considered a number of factors too.

yeah you're right, get it, just bummed man, we're so close as a program to turning the corner, but it always seems like one step forward, two steps back with all this stuff...#frustrated

Why is this horse being beaten? Does anyone have elderly parents? The guy is basically going to be with his mom and dad and have his dad's old job.

In that nomadic life that seems like a dream.

Anyone who thinks Long is not a better choice than Monroe as defensive coordinator is not rational. The two are not even in the same stratosphere. It’s time to move on. Dino needs to make two great not good hires. His job is depending on it.

Agred 100% on the Long hire and Monroe taking the new job was the right thing for him to do at this time.

Dino's job depends on him getting to another bowl game next year. Sure he needs to hire two new position coaches and he needs to do a good job replacing these guys but even if he hits it out of the park it doesn't change any of the expectations on him for next year. That's kind of the issue. Tough to hire guys recruiting for beyond tomorrow when there are no guarantees, tough spot to be in but this is on Dino as he needs guys that can make an immediate impact
