Possible Portal Point Guards

Any big and/or surprising names?
Only thing I’ve been hearing is…JP and Reynolds are the top targets and they are waiting for Tenn to end and Straughn is in talks with his people (Reynolds) and if he hits the portal, unless we get completely outbid, the assumption is he’s ours. Now, they arent just sitting around only waiting for those two scenarios, they are working their back door channels to find out players prices and demands. All because its not being twitted out, doesnt mean Red and Straughn arent grindin. So really nothing new, they are keeping their cards close

I know some people may disagree but Reynolds and Estrella would be great gets IMO.

Interesting that Red and Straughn doing all the recruiting… wonder if that means Griff is heading to Siena too

Those would be TERRIFIC gets. And I agree about Estrella [been sitting on this news for a bit].

Reynolds's perimeter skills would be a massive, massive upgrade from this year's gang that couldn't shoot straight.

But these moves wouldn't alleviate my concern about lead guard [and I recognize that Reynolds probably needs to show more playmaking to have a shot at the NBA, but he isn't a natural 1].

But these moves would be solid as hell, and would make us forget about some of the outgoing players quickly.

I agree they would be terrific gets. The big unknown here is can Westry play some point?I have no idea, but I think Reynolds could initiate the offense.

Reynolds, Bell, and the Starling from the second half of last season might be the best shooting team we've ever had, and they'd be a lot more athletic than Girard, Boeheim, and Swider, the current best shooting team we've ever had.

Carlos at point?

Will be interesting to see how it unfolds.

Which harkens back to my earlier question: is Red comfortable going into next season with two combo guards again to run the offense? Is that what his "style" / system is? Or is that just the system because that's what the personnel restrict us to? Is the somewhat stagnant iso ball a function of not having a legitimate lead guard, or by design?

And Westry is indeed an unknown. Risky to rely upon him [I think he is a versatile player, similar to Quadir, who can certainly handle the ball in similar fashion, but maybe not a full-time point].

You want NIL $ and great players. Get Adam Weitsman and Kent Syverud to play nice together again.

I'm sure Adam would like his picture taken with several of his boys he would be paying A LOT of money to along with sitting floor side with ICE -T.
I wasn't sure how I felt about posting this as I knew many were not on board with Weitsman. I should have followed my heart in that I don't think we need anyone but our alums to donate money.

Thank you for showing your objections to my post.

Straughn is cruitin

You figure Maryland is out with Mack now that they added the Belmont kid. So I still think we could be a player there even if a big dog or two gets involved. But landing Reynolds would be fantastic.

Watch Westry’s Auburn YouTube highlights. They’re against mid majors but he just looks so fluid and has great passing instincts and very good driving ability. And he was apparently looking very good last fall in practice before his setback. I get that his injury history is a real concern but if he’s healthy, look out. He could have Q’s role next season but less erratic.

Better defender maybe not as explosive driving/ scoring

Those two and the Hofstra PG would make me feel pretty happy. Would still like reinforcements on the wing too but those three would give us much needed beef inside, shooting, and PG skills.

I wouldn't mind seeing more offense go through Brown. We need Reynolds and Starling to do the ball handling, which I think they can. But we might not be using Brown correctly if we have an old school PG who needs the ball in his hands all the time.

And if we bring in a legit center allowing Brown to play 25-30 minutes at the 4, we could run 3 guards for 15-20 mnutes with Westry/JJ being the 3rd bigger athletic guard?

You think thats another angle, with 3 ball handlers, there is less of a need to have a pure point? Between Brown plus Portal Center/Mcleod we have plenty of size/rebounding (Mcleod was our leading rebounder per 40)

Might be nice to actually see Reynolds actually linked to us before we count on him. Maybe have him enter the portal as well.

I think it's a possibility, but I'm in the camp of not wanting to expect too much from Westry considering he hasn't played the last two years. He has a skill set that would really help us however, without a doubt.

I also think Estrella is pretty much the perfect guy to pair with Brown assuming he makes the sophomore jump, which means you can play Brown, Estrella, and Freeman in any combination and have it work offensively while being able to go small or big defensively depending on what is needed. Then you have the specialist McLeod who can stop anyone from scoring at the rim against us for whatever 10 minutes Red chooses.

Skill wise, I think it's a well built team. It would all be about player development from that point to try to get players like Westry and Estrella to where they need to be.

I'm not making any predictions about Reynolds specifically, more talking about how I think a 'combo guard' or maybe more specifically a non-pass-first point guard can work with next year's team, so long as he can handle the ball.
