RIP John Thompson

He will forever be our most hated and yet respected adversary.

John Thompson influenced the game more than any other college basketball coach has in my lifetime. He was the biggest, most well-known figure in the college game. If you asked his peers, he would finish very high from a respect standpoint.

He graduated 75 of 77 four-year student-athletes during his tenure as head coach. He went to war for his kids, and stood with them through their adult lives. This is a huge, difficult loss for my favorite sport.

I always rooted for G'Town if we were knocked out. I say it proudly. They played the game differently. Without remorse, without apology. So did we. Those Syracuse teams of that era had some extremely talented players who played hard. Every night. And they all hated to lose. Those were the greatest of games.
