Groundbreaking alternative paper Village Voice shuts down

Back in the day, the Voice had, IMO, some of the best arts criticism around. Music, movies and theatre. For the last 20 years or so, I've been surprised that it was able to limp along.

No longer cutting edge, though...

My fave feature was Christgau's Consumer Guide. Short, one-paragraph reviews of albums. I particularly loved his one-sentence review of an ABBA album:

"We have met the enemy, and it is them."

RIP. Basically what the New Times in Syracuse was modeled after - which I believe now leaves the New Times (launched around 1969) one of the oldest publications of its kind.

The VV helped move music from all-teenybopper to some teeny-bopper/some more...whatever.
