Shafer Family

Cam Lynch is an NFL Talent... he's still playing, for TB now.

I did not mean to discredit his abilities, but i don't think any of us saw him going to the NFL, let alone still playing years later, around his junior year. Not to say he wasn't playing well, more saying he had an absolutely monster senior season and I think HCSS is partially responsible.

There is no reason he couldn't be a great head coach. Just run this offense! I hope it happens for him

Agreed.

I am super, super glad we have Babers. And I think his ceiling as a head coach is not paralleled by anyone we have had in the position since Coach Mac. That doesn't mean he's going undefeated and winning a national title - but it does mean I think he can eventually have us at a Top 25 level.

All that being said, I think Shafer's human touch and personality is absolutely tailor made to be a college football coach. A few adjustments and learning from one's mistakes and he'd do a good job at any number of D1 schools - either as DC or HC.

Quick story about the type of guy SS is... at the time, I'm a HS OC. I meet him at the NYSHSCAA Convention at Turning Stone, literally within days of him being announced as the HC at Syracuse.

I sit next to him while Doug Marrone and Bill O'Brien are giving a presentation. He makes small talk with me as he furiously scribbles ultra-organized notes. I couldn't discern if they were in regards to his new position, the presentation or both. He takes time to take a picture with me, BS with me for about 5 min, and then sprints out of the casino.

Sunday morning he's back in the casino to give a presentation on different coverages I believe. He comes directly up to me and addresses me by first name. Laughs about how he's the HC at Syracuse and got the JV time slot at the convention to speak. Picks on everybody for being to hungover and lazy to make the presentation on time.

Over the next two years I see him at the same clinic, the SU Coaches Clinic and the SU Team Camp multiple times. He always remembered personal pieces of our conversations. He always addressed me.

Over that same timeframe, I got to know Tim Daoust pretty well too. By their final year here, they allowed me full access to practices and any film cut ups I wanted to use for studying. I simply had to call and ask.

They took this approach with any coach at any level that I ever saw them interact with. They were always willing to help anyway possible.

A lot of people may not have liked him as a coach, but, I will always defend him for many more reasons than listed here.

Wow.

I still think we haven't seen the last of him at Syracuse.

Idk why but I just think that.

Did his daughter end up going to Maryland?

Yes, and her and Jake Pickard are dating I believe.
Really ??? That's awesome!!!

I don't think you can ever find a coach who wants to win more, and do it the right way than Shaf.

This is accurate, or at least it was when I spoke with Missy. She mentioned it and I said "how'd that go over with coach?"

She said the assistants were protective like uncles, but Dad had no issues "because he knows what kind of kids he recruits".
This is funny. So Acosta sees them starting to talk, I'll leave out those details... He doesn't know what to do. Spends the next handful of hours agonizing over telling coach Shafer. Finally, decides he has to. Goes in to tell HCSS, Schafer looks at him and calmly says, Bobby you've got to trust in your parenting ability. We raised her a certain way and trust she'll make the right decision.

Also, this reminds me of the Pickard recruitment story. As you'all remember, they got snowed in and had to spend the night at their house. I believe 5 or 6 coaches total. They were convinced that this night is what sealed the deal. At one point, nervous they wouldn't make it, SS had them look into renting snowmobiles, and as they tell it, would've rented them if necessary.

I've posted before and I know it would never happen...but my kingdom for Babers as HC and Shaf as DC. Guy is a winner and a good guy through and through.

For the record, I'd love to have Shafe at DC again at some point down the road. His defenses were exciting to watch and could light teams up on occasion.
Hi! Geno Smith

Can't agree more on the quality of their character. Any time I got around him with my kids he was great.

My Syracuse man cave was featured in CNY magazine, and right after the release, Gedney called me to get my info for the Shafers. They were so impressed that they wanted to give me a bunch of stuff for my basement since they were (at the time) headed to Maryland, and didn't want some of it. 2 big boxes of stuff. I picked it up at the house, and had a great chat with Missy. I was really overwhelmed. I mean, who does that?

So what did you get? Do you have the story/link on your ManCave, would love to see it?

You couldnt even entertain bring FHCSS onboard as DC until every player he recruited has left the school (graduation or attrition). If you do, you risk a "Crimson Tide" Scenario lol

New IC head coach!!!
I know people like him as a coordinator, but I think he'd be a great head coach at the D2 or D3 level. His kids love him and play hard for him. I could see him having a great deal of success. I think he also takes pride in how they do academically.

100% and i think some of Dino's lieutenants may get looks at MAC schools if he finishes strong this year. This system can work.

There was no online presence on the piece as far as I know. Here is my post I shared on this site...
Just wanted to share...

I got a lot of little things. Pins, football, a medal from fort drum, with his name on one side. Among the biggies were the current blue helmet, and his personal Nike road bad with his initials embroidered on it.
