I've often said that if I knew what I know now when I was playing football, I would've been a star. Of course that was 50 years ago.

I mean, these tryouts can often uncover kickers... you know that guy from highschool soccer team X (or europe) that was a set-ball specialist and has a cannon for a leg and shows up and says " I have been practicing kicking footballs for 2 months and can kick 65-yard balls accurately. Here let me show you..."

Maybe, although I doubt it. This is likely more about generating excitement for the students

I think this is great. Like others have said, not much will probably come of it, but maybe you'll get some walk on practice squad types. Just because you try out doesn't mean you'll earn a scholarship, but there might be some high school talent who wasn't good enough for D1 and decided to pass up D3 ball in order to get an education at Syracuse. Maybe now those guys can fulfill their dream of playing football in college by being on the practice squad or just an extra body at practice that doesn't count against the 85 scholarship limit, while at the same time getting their degree from SU. In any case, I think it's nice to just see these things advertised, and to not see the program so closed off to anyone not walking through the football facilities at Manley.

Does the title SPRING tryouts imply there may also be a SUMMER tryout?

Georgia and Texas AM carried rosters close to 130 strong, while Syracuse has hovered around 105 players on their roster. To get to 125 players you have to have at least 40 walk-ons. I think we had 21 or 22 last season. Do we have twenty more lockers in the locker room?

This Spring Tryout is only two weeks away. Not much time for an interested player to get ready.

I absolutely love this. Nothing may come of it as far as players, but it's just a breath of fresh air to see the program doing something like this.

Great PR. Bunch kids come to the tryouts. If even a couple make it as walkon it creates instant buzz with the students and community.

We had a guy in my dorm in 84 walk-on the football team. It was just that, players for spring practice. He was a nose tackle and played in the spring game (will we have a real spring game this year instead of what Babers did?). He practiced during the regular season and got to stand on the sidelines in full uniform for home games. I am not sure if he ever got into a game though.

Walk-ons serve many roles in a program. Initially they are used on the scout teams that the first team offense and first team defense practice against as they prepare for games. This allows scholarship players to focus on the gameplan. Every year it seems like a couple of walk-ons work their way into contributing roles on special teams. Last season Ryan Dolan played more than 100 snaps on special teams and in 2022 AJ Calabro played close to 100 snaps on special teams.

You may remember AJ Calabro. He was a captain when we played Rutgers in 2021. The game was played on the 20th anniversary of 9-11. In honor of his father, Sal Calabro who was a firefighter for NYFD and passed away at the twin towers that day, AJ was named a captain for the Rutgers game.

I was at that game. It gave me chills to watch AJ walk out that day as a captain.

While at Syracuse AJ Calabro received a scholarship award in 2022 from the Markus Paul Foundation. The Markus Paul Foundation was founded in 2021 after Markus' death in 2020. The foundation has awarded scholarship funds to walk-ons in the football program since its establishment; AJ Calabro in 2022, and Nate Wellington in 2023. I'm looking forward to seeing who the Foundation recognizes this year.

AJ Calabro is currently in law school at Rutgers and is the founder of Calabro Sports Counsel. Calabro Sports Counsel represents athletes in contact negotiations, NIL deals, brand development and marketing.
