the game and not complain about it every year as if our program is cursed in this area or somehow it's the fault of the S&C guy. If you roll out smaller inferior athletes versus bigger and better ones you also increase the risk of injury.. That said, they will always exist every year and are not an excuse for such poor performance

Or over-use guys.

when you have depth you live with it.. when you dont you complain. How many teams were playing their walk on QB and 3rd string FR center with success ?

Look at the pros. A team like miami went from rushing for 200 a game to 75 when the center went out and a backup pro center is much better than our 3rd string kid is ever going to be.

To lose the starting QB several years in a row when we dont really run him nearly as much as some teams do is just bad luck.

Mahoney is no longer a walk on and is our 2nd string QB? That's my whole point. How many teams had to play their 2nd string QB? Countless

We had to play a walk on qb last year as well. Somehow, that wasn't made an excuse when we fired the coach.

Kids who aren't physically ready to play at this level are getting thrown in there out of necessity and that will cause injuries. Over-use certainly will too, as Cubs mentioned. When you have Alabama and Ohio State depth, you survive injuries, when you have Syracuse depth you don't.

Depth on the Dline takes a jump next year. A year older and stronger and with experience and then hopefully add 2-4 FR into the mix. Same for the Oline and thats where we need it.

He is only not a walk on because our 2nd string quit and the 3rd string lost his job. His elevation to 2nd string was by default.

Again, he our 2nd string QB most teams end up playing their 2nd string qb at some point and actually played decent.

A walk on QB for a third year head coach and a walk on QB who fit the option system they were running. Shafer and company were certainly put in a tough situation but no one can say the program seemed to be heading in the right direction. Injuries are just a symptom of the illness of this program: not nearly enough ready to play P5 players.

Had some injuries, but also had our LBs all season, our RBs & WRs all season (except for Ishmael out for a couple of games -- and we had depth in Cornelius). We had depth in the secondary -- the ones who went down were replaced by comparable DBs. At C and OG -- we actually had some depth.

The bigger problem was lack of ACC level talent at the top of the depth chart.

How many other programs lost their starting QB 3 years in a row? Who else also lost 1st AND 2nd string centers this year, a guard, starting safety, starting corner, second string corner (for a time), and starting defensive tackle?

These kind of injury lists are not common. Not common at all. It's not an excuse. It is, however a reason this program is not able to do as well as possible

14-23 was why the former HC was fired. If Dino is 14-23 he will get heat from the fanbase. The former HC also was hired to continue the Marrone momentum which he didn't. Also this year's schedule was harder than last years.

I know it's frustrating that we're back in the Groundhog Day of disappointment. But Mahoney would have been Shafer's backup this year, in his 4th year. That's a problem. Maybe Dino will face the same problem (God I hope not). But can't really fault him for what he inherited at QB.

It appears so far that he's doing what's needed to stockpile talent at that position. He needs to get it done, and get them ready to play. I believe he will.

The Dungey health issues do seem to be some bad luck, at least for Dino. So many QBs run so often in college football. But ours seems to get hit harder than anyone. The Nebraska QB's "concussion" on the same day as Dungey vs Clemson was due to him diving to a yard marker and banging his head on the turf. Not sustained from a tackle.

Sucks to end yet another season with more Ls than Ws, but have to believe that it will get turned around with this coach. And that he won't go anywhere, no matter how much the unhelpful local media seem to be promoting it and trying to sound smart.

Excuse or factor... call it what you will but they do exist as a part of football and they do impact performance. Shouldn't they be discussed and scrutinized like every other part of football that affects performance?

When its the same guy getting injured over and over again, and its your most important player, it gets frustrating.

Shafer also was victimized by the previous coach not recruiting a d-1 qb. Our current head coach did not have the same liability. Shafer also had a winning season, including a bowl win against a Big ten team in his first year. It wasn't because Marrone left the cupboard full. In 4 years, Doug didn't recruit one d-1 qb. And in the 3 years that Shafer was here, we didn't exactly fill the NFL draft with our choices. I love Syracuse university and hope that Babers can get us back to where we were in the 90's. Time will tell. The Va Tech game was great. But we barely beat UConn and Boston College. His first year was what it was. It was hardly a great success that some here want to think that it was. He was behind the 8 ball for sure. The next couple of years will tell the tale. Let's also see how we finish this recruiting class. Bnoro says that we could lose some of our recruits. That would be very bad.

Didn't Doug Marrone recruit Terrel Hunt to Syracuse? Wasn't Hunt the QB that Shafer used in 2013?
Shafer was 14-23 and hired to continue the momentum he failed and was rightfully fired last year.

lol Did you watch the games? Do you think Hunt was a d-1 qb? Could he have played qb for any team in the ACC? Shafer winning 7 games with him is something for Shafer should brag about.
