1-and-1

Don’t even get me started on the possession arrow as another stupid rule. It’s called a JUMP BALL for a reason. That needs to change before anything
Agree 1 million percent. Not to mention if you win the opening tip, the other team gets the possession arrow. How about at least awarding the arrow to the team that won the tip? It’s almost like you’re punished for it

1) The 1-&-1 is outdated, totally agree it should be eliminated. I’m kinda surprised it’s hung on as long as it has.
2) I’m mostly ambivalent on quarters vs halves. I would like to see how it would effect breaks in play and TV timeouts - I suspect the only way quarters will be implemented is in a format which allows more commercial breaks to get crammed in. I would not be a fan of that impact on the game.
3). I think people clamoring for the return of jump balls have forgotten what a cluster they were pre-1981. It may be that the best way to remind people what a bad idea jump balls are is to bring it back for a year. I have a lot of confidence it would last as long as challenging pass interference did in the NFL.

How about adding injury time as international soccer does?
Or adding a Kyle Rule on free throws (Or Roberson Rule for people who prefer alliteration): 4 to make 2.
And a Red Rule...techical foul against a coach who fails to foul before the opponent can shoot when the other team is down 3 in the final 15 seconds

They tried bringing the jump ball back for a year not too long ago. It was great for us because we had Warrick who won all of them (maybe that's why prople here like it?). But you are right, overall, nobody liked it and it went away. Personally Im all for things that speed up the game and get us more basketball and less proceededural stuff.

I am confused because the 1-1 rule came out in the 50s not the 70s, which is also when the game changed from quarters back to halves but that only lasted like 3-4 years.

But at that time the 1-1 was for the whole game, then they had the 2 shot for last 3 min rule, then that went back 1-1 all game. 57-58 the 1-1 rule became more like what we have now.

The FT rule changed in 72 that eliminated the Ft for the first 6 common fouls.

the 90-91s is when the 2 shot after 10 rule became what it is.

I understand the nostalgia for halves instead of quarters... but the reality is this, Men's college basketball is the only organized basketball league, at any age level, male or female, in the WORLD, that uses halves instead of quarters that I'm aware of. The ONLY one. I don't see quarters having much impact anyway, so might as well just do it.
Is there something inherently wrong with being the only one to do something?

Not to mention it’s absurd how many games I’ve seen where they get the possession arrow wrong and miss flipping it properly. It’s rarely called out but it happens way too often.

Better yet, why not let the offense choose if they get shots or the ball?

You fouled William Kyle in the bonus? We’ll take the ball, please.

You fouled Gerry McNamara in the bonus? Shots, sir.

Yeah I mean basically it would be the football approach to having a choice on taking the penalty or not.

The only problem I see with going to an actual jump is that it prevents rewarding any small guy with making a good defensive play with a tie up. In the case of a height difference, you're guaranteeing the team with the bigger guy gets possession. You see it in the NBA where the small guy doesn't even try. At least with the possession arrow, it's a 50/50 shot.
