10.13.12 - A Piscataway Beatdown

21 posts before your response... you're slipping!

His days here are fast waning. He's one of those guys who pined for a "rivalry" with SU as if rivalries could be created out of thin air. He won't be here for basketball season that's for sure.

The "at least for a while" is a head nod to their fantasy that Rutgers will eventually be picked for the ACC or the Big 10 or now the SEC. No takers yet for all that potential market that has done nothing for the Big East.

I'm thinking rutgers has trouble scoring more than 20 against our D.

We return 8 starters from the conferences top scoring, pass, and total defense including the Big East defensive player of the year in Greene(LB). Along with him are Bednarik and Thorpe watch list canidate Logan Ryan(CB) and Butkas list canidate Beauharnis(LB). Senior Scott Vallone will anchor the interior DL. Ex Giant Keith Hamiltons son 5 star recruit D Hamilton will add to the depth at DE postion. We should be the best defense in the BE again this season.

Tell me about the SU defense and why you think they will be great...

I think you guys are more apt to go 3-9 this year.

After going 1-6 in the Big East last year SU is far more likely to go 3-9 then RU. Lets be real here...

Doubtful. And unlike your token attempt, we play a tough schedule this year.

I'm confident SU will rise to the occasion. Not so sure about rutgers.

Syracuse returns 8 of their top 10 tacklers and every single impact defender including every linebacker and the entire defensive line save 2.

Of 27 defenders who registered a tackle last year 20 return.

Rutgers scoring against Syracuse under Marrone - 19, 13 and 10.

Against regular season D1 foes in 2011 Rutgirls average 22.75 ppg. Not really an offensive juggernaut.

So your most talented defensive player, who is gone, had no impact at all on your D last year? Your linebackers were very good a few years ago but I wasn't impressed by any of them last year and they seem undersized. Not sure why it is a strength having them all back this year other then a year of experience. Your Dline lost its most talented player and seemed to have trouble reaching the QB last seaason. Your corners are unproven so not sure what to expect there. Seems you are counting on a lot of youth/unproven players in order to be better on D.

We absolutely need to improve on O. I like the way our Oline is shaping up(which has been terrible the last few years) and if we get servicable play out of the QB postion we have the talent at the WR and RB postion to put up more points this year.

Syracuse scored 16 and 13 against Rutgers the last two years under Marrone and our D will be better this year. Not really much to speak of on your end from the "Saints offensive guru"either...

Hmm maybe you blocked it out. Do you remember this linebacker from last year? He's not even a starter...

Our best player on D is returning...

Strong Safety Shamarko Thomas will eat your children (if Chris Christie hasn't gotten to them first.)

This is the same reason we like our D. The Dline is shaping up and we have talent at the CB/S/LB positions to stop a lot of teams. What killed us last year on D, were injuries to Jones and secondary.

I feel bad for the Houston fans. They won't know what hit them. Assuming he finds any.

If you're talking about Chandler Jones he was not the most talented defensive player and only played in 7 games. While he had some good games he hardly made an impact on the defense for much of the season. He didn't play in the rutgers game.

Phil Thomas might be the bigger loss. He only played in 10 games and led the team in tackles and INTs but we're deeper at safety and the kid who started in his place when he was booted returns. In fact Wilkes had 9 tackles against rutgers and finished 7th on the team.

You may not have been impressed with our linebackers but Spruill was 2nd team All Big East. DDavis was a true freshman and Vaughan was a rookie regarding playing time. All 3 finished in the top 5 in tackles on the team. The 3 combined had 177 tackles and 25 tackles for loss. 3 of the 4 backups all played substantially.

Our secondary is just fine and has depth. Our DLine is huge and will be just fine against your pourous and uproven line.

I don't see at all how you conclude we're depending on youth/unproven players in order to be better on D. I already pointed out that we return 8 of the top 10 tacklers on the team and 20 of 27 who recorded any tackles. Many of whom were playing for the first time last year.

Well, he did pretty well against the coach on your end, you know--the "best coach in your 'program's' history," winning 2 out of 3 and completely blowing a chance to bitch slap you three years in a row.

This I don't understand. Your defense played will last year, specifically coming up with HUGE turnovers in big spots. I respect them for that. They played solid coverage but they didn't touch our QB all game either.

Now as for our defense. Chan Jones didn't play against you last year. Our front 4 and LB's that did held your RB's to 59 yards on 30 carries. They also sacked your QB once and tackled them in the backfield outside the pocket 6 more times for -51. That was all 3 undersized LB's playing their first year in those positions that did that. The fact that we return everyone that did that to you, a year older/stronger,bigger, should at least concern you. Our secondary will also have our best safety (also didnt play against you last year) returning. Oh, we've also added some JUCO's and transfers to the rotation as well.

If we score 20 we'll win. We'll score more than 20 on you this year.

Honestly, I still haven't recovered from last year's game. brutal loss... brutal.
The Orange handed that game to them last year, they were not close to a good team. It was disgusting.

What killed us last year were special teams, stupid penalties, a game-ending fumble and a pick six drop by Thomas.

Can't forget the dropped touchdown pass that was intercepted at the goal line. I'd go so far as to tag that Reason Number 1 for the loss.

I must have had a mental block about that one - too painful.

That play [and what transpired next] was definitely the turning point of the game. We're about to go in for a TD, with all the momentum going our way, and probably building what would be an insurmountable lead for RU's inept offense. Instead of scoring, we have a fluke interception that bounces off of Kyle Foster's shoulder pad.

Then we stuff them inside the 5 yard line and force a punt. All is not lost--because they have a short punt from the back of the end zone, our punt returner is inside their 50, and we're going to get the ball back in great field position. But for some inexplicable reason, out coaches have the players try to block the punt [a terrible call given that game situation], and they commit a roughing the punter penalty which gives RU a first down. They get the ball back, and dink and dunk their way down the field for an eventual TD that closes the lead we'd built and puts them back in the game.

That series of events was indicative of how that entire second half went for us. Painful, because we were better than them, and we should have beat them for the third consecutive year in a row.

Shoulda, woulda, coulda...

As in- if not for a terrible shank of a short field goal we should have won in 2010 as well.

All that matters is the W and Ls. Looking forward to see who proves it on the field in 2012!

2-1 in the Marrone era against Rutgirls. Soon to be 3-1, after which we'll leave your sorry program in the dust for good after the season.

Now go get your shinebox.

Have a winning record for the last decade against you in the Schiano era and can't wait to have our first year coach Flood send you out the door with another L...

Big deal--have fun living in those GRob salad days, where your program flirted with the lower ends of mediocrity. That's all over with now. You're a third rate program who'll be stuck playing in a third rate conference.

Also, I know that Rutgers fans are delusional, but in case you haven't notice there's a new Sheriff in town, as Coach Marrone proved against that schaudenfraude coach you guys had. And Flood is a boob--after we beat you this year, proving beyond a shadow of a doubt that SU has once again surpassed your program for good, we'll leave you to your fate in a football conference that will be the equivalent of the A-10 in hoops.

The Big 10 ain't walking through that door--hope you have fond memories of that one basically irrelevant Thursday night win over Louisville you had a few years back, because it is all downhill from there!

Wanna go farther back? Didn't think so. Good luck on your quest to win your first conference title though.

Not for nothing, but for me personally the best part of moving to the ACC is no longer having to endure the Rutgers obsession on this board.
Handing Rutgers a coveted rival status because of a few down years, always seemed needy & pathetic to me...I just never quite got it.
