just cuz you're a great player doesn't mean you're a great coach.
boeheim wasn't a great player. patrick ewing was a great player.
phil jackson wasn't a great player. larry bird was a great player.
shaquille oneil was a head coach for 1 season. coach K never a pro.
etc.etc. gary gait was the greatest college lacrosse player i ever saw.

but there is no direct correlation betwixt the 2 skill sets.

bird took the job reluctantly saying he'd only coach 3 seasons. he led them to their best record ever and was coach of the year in year 1, losing in 7 games to the bulls in the eastern finals. jackson had jordan. then they won the division for 2 years and in year 3 they lost in the nba finals and he stepped down. he won about 70% of his games. i'm not sure the pacers have been back since.

shaq did movies, tnt and rap albums. he may have coached, but where?

gait took a moribound women's team and coached them to their best success. he never played women's lax.

But, Gary Gait did very well at MD and with the women's team at SU. I think for those reasons alone GARY was the best LAX player ever and isn't a lousy coach.

I believe he needs another year and more talent, like 5 more Joey Spallinas.

Ain't like it used to be - very good players are going to other schools. There's no direct pipeline into SU anymore. I hope he's getting out to recruit the best players.
