finally got to see what i missed in person.

1) Wake passed pretty well the first half.. all the talk of soft coverage.. didnt happen. except for the final drive of the half when they got 2 passes they only had one other completion against a soft corner.

2) dowels struggled

3) the first Wake TD the WR got away with PI pulled wingham off balance and then beat the safety who was watching inside for no reason

4) first drive of game we went down field. ran a rub route, Dungey sat on the TE who was open but fell, but Ish was wide open in the seem with no safety over the top. read that better and its a TD.

5) SU stopped ourselves the first half, Te falls down drive 1 Dungey takes sack, bad snap drive 2, Estime had jet sweep for td and let DE get him, i think phillips a bit quicker turns that corner.

6) amazing how wide open the WR reverse pass was, deep was open but throw was late, backside RB was uncovered and WR run was open too.

7) wake too advantage of some nice play selection. the long TD pass, the tunnel screen against a blitz, and several times matched the TE/WR/Slost against the outside LB for several nice gains

8) missed tackles on several key plays that should have gone for zero turned into about 75 yds of wake first half offense. clean that up quickly i hope.

9) the first time we went 5 wide the RB didnt get into the DE which let him drop off and deflect the slant which was open.

10) on the first PI call before the wr pass. awful route by Estime, he never sold the out or hook just lazy and thats why he got so little separation.

11) the formation call on he punt at the end of the half was a terrible call, no wonder coach got so upset. dont know what the ref was thinking, we had 7 on the line cost us 25 yds and maybe limited wake being aggressive.

12) we had bad field position one time. the RB needs to make the first down on the draw lots of room to run but hesitated in the hole , could have just run outside and got the FD too

13) only a few bad reads by Dungey, one 2 man rush they had no push and he hurried a throw into coverage and threw it poorly lucky no INT. missed one zone read that he held it and led to aloss when the RB would have had a huge gain backside, but pretty well done the other times.

14) after the targeting call they forgot to restart the clock gave wake more time to move the ball

the 2-3 quarters were really a story of not having the ball, only ran about 10 plays but still scored 3 times. really the play calling was there for 40+ which is good for how we seemed to struggle. a coupe better decisions and we score 24-27 the first half.

Some good observations in there.

Good analysis except point number 1.

On almost every play, the wide side corner, usually Whigham, played at least 8 yards off his receiver. This allowed WF to pitch and catch without route disruption and their timing was nearly perfect.

Thankfully, halftime adjustments and increased pressure on the QB changed the tempo of their passing game.

Exactly. I counted 10-12 yards off line of scrimmage on each play by 1 of 2 corners. We got killed on that in first half. Don't you only do that when you are doing a full on blitz? Then in the 2nd half we played closer to the line of scrimmage and blitzed even more. What was the reasoning for that in the first half?

except in the first half it happened twice.. not saying we didnt play off some. but they only thew 2 passes to those guys.

Is soft coverage by the corners a suggestion that there isn't much faith in the safeties yet to get the right read and come over the top? Or do they so far lack faith in the corners to prevent big plays in man coverage?

we played a ton of press. they did a bunch of 3 wides and we played the soft LB. i think people need to look at other teams more as not many press all that often. wake played soft corner a bunch too.

I rewatched the game last night just to confirm what I saw at the game. We played with one soft corner consistently. I was shocked.

we do it every game. it had no bearing on the game at all

Probably a little of both.

With our preferred blitz-heavy defense, it's important that we can trust our CB's. I'm not sure DCCB has reached that point yet.

If I remember correctly we tried to go deep a couple of times but Dungey didn’t get the passes off due to pressure. (memory is faded) but on his hit and fumble I believe he pumped faked looking to air it out.

Stalled in the redzone due to mistakes, though i wanted to take a shot at the endzone on first or 2nd down both times.

I wish we’d try to hit the edge more with the running game. I thought a good ole fashioned toss sweep at times would’ve worked.

I respectively disagree. All you have to do is look at the first downs and time of possession stats.

During the HCSS reign, I can't remember when we ever played that soft for such an extended length of time.

Probably a little of column A, little of column B.

i wonder if we have that sweep. Wake was really trying to stuff the inside run

so if they only threw passes to the soft corner once out of 20+ throws how much didnt it effect that game in the first half, they threw to the TE and slot guy much more and that was far worse cover issues.

Watch the game again. Even the color-guy mentioned it during the telecast.

It's ok to be wrong.

I think it's a bit of both right now. Williams and Cordy looked out of position several times including as the OP noted, on the first WF TD. Scissum was even worse on limited duty.
