20+ Years Later, I can't let go...

I was sitting in the end zone where the 'pass interference' was called - I think to end the first half? Sitting with a bunch of co-workers who were up from our Tennessee office and they had a good laugh at some of the calls in that game.
I assume all the boys came up for this one? Slightly before my time

Make sure your knee pads are in place if you see this clown:

Correct. The penalties were 15 yard "uniform / equipment violation" penalties. We had two called against us by an SEC crew.

I watch a ton of college football, and literally have never seen that call made in any other game before that or since--no exaggeration.
I think it was player's jocks they were "checking".

I end up noticing knee pads and where they are located relative to knee in every game I watch at every level up to pros. I'll never forget that call

"those calls"

The most frustrating play of that game for me (aside from the penalties) was that 60 yard scamper by Tee Martin followed by a 15 yard late hit penalty. If we get a stop there on 3rd and long, very good chance we win that game.

The pass interference call on Will Allen was just as bad, if not worse. Took 5 seconds for the flag to come out from a ref at the other end of the field. We win if not for that call. Disgraceful.
I may get murdered for saying this, but that was actually the correct call even if it was made by the wrong guy. I've slow-moed the replay and Allen got there early. It should have never came to that though. Without the screwings we received earlier, the game would have been out of reach. That may have been the best game McNabb ever played. He looked like the best football player on the planet that day.

Actually the violations resulted in loss of timeouts. Which would have been very valuable on Tennessee's final drive.
I'm pretty sure there was some sort of yardage penalty on at least one. I remember it taking us out of scoring position.

Could have been both. I'm going solely on memory since I haven't watched the youtube link.

im going on memory too, but they threw a flag...something happened.

either the play was incomplete and they just reset down and distance...basically gave them a 2nd..3rd down we'll say...or they got yards...or both.

they didnt stop the game, trot out Joan Rivers and have her publicaly embarass the player by saying 'your pants are too short and you cant wear that belt with those shoes'...and then just resume play.

something bad, something negatvie towards the Orange definetely happened.

I have no problem with the calls -- IF IT'S A RULE. But apparently it's only a rule sometimes. Correction, it was only a rule in THAT game. I am of the opinion that the UT coach kept that in his back pocket and then used it when he needed it. "Hey ref, do you see that guy with his knees uncovered?" (Then to his own players, "Pssst. Guys, pull your knee pads down."

Agreed. It's just convenient as fans to blame the officials. It was the right call. Could they have swallowed the whistle? Sure - it was very close. But this is nothing comparable to FG skibbie.

Anyhow, it was meathead defensive coaching on our last drive that cost us the win if you really want to boil it down. We get a 1st and goal... and run 3 conservative plays to set up a FG. Bottom line: winning teams overcome adversity, and it starts with coaching.

Hey, it's my recollection of the events, and I'm sticking to it.
