2008 vs 2017

I know Mike Williams was a little crazy, but still think he was the most talented WR this program has had since Harrison. Nothing against Amba, Ish or even Alec.

With the right head on his shoulders and an offense like this, he could’ve been an All-American.

You’ll here from the yards per play folks, but I think both are important. At some point you have to look at all that yardage and say “they have to defend us all 400+ yards at tempo”

Not a yards per play guy as much as a points per possession guy as I believe it is the statistic that most closely correlates to success in college football and correctly takes into account the pace of play and its effect on overall possessions/plays in a game. Here are the numbers going back to 2005 (Grob 1st season). The numbers below represent national ranking in Points per Possession on offense and defense as adjusted for opponent (strength of schedule) and home/away games (statistics are courtesy of cfb analytics). Additionally, I have included the regular season record of each team for uniformity. The three bowl years (2010, 2012 and 2013) were all wins.

Year Offensive points per possession rank Defensive points per possession rank Record

2005 109th 52nd 1-10

2006 89th 48th 4-8

2007 102nd 112th 2-10

2008 97th 94th 3-9

2009 79th 87th 4-8

2010 87th 30th 7-5

2011 70th 69th 5-7

2012 36th 61st 7-5

2013 95th 46th 6-6

2014 112th 28th 3-9

2015 57th 96th 4-8

2016 91st 91st 4-8

2017 68th 57th 4-3

It was a sad exercise looking back/remembering the past decade+ of Syracuse mediocrity and I am hopeful that this all comes to an end sooner than later. Will be really interesting to see how things play out through the rest of this season. As stated previously, this offense eventually needs to score more points in order to be a consistent winner on a season to season basis. I am hopeful and excited that they will start turning all these plays/yards into points soon and what that will look like when we get there.

An offensive explosion and win this week would do wonders toward that goal. Go Orange!

Or Marrone* or Shafer or P...

*except year #4, 2012, maybe

No you can't.

Good run down :).

My only quibbles:

1. I don't think you can *just* compare tempo-free stats. How many more possessions are we getting in 2017? If it's 2-3 more than any year other than 2012 (we used some tempo then) than the ranking is deceiving (we're scoring more than the other years). For example, lets compare the two closest years in PPP:

2011
70th in PPP on O, 24.2 points per game good for #83 nationally
69th in PPP on D, 28.5 points per game allowed, good for #73 nationally

2017, so far
68th in PPP on O, 31.3 points per game good for #52 nationally
57th in PPP on D, 24.3 points per game allowed, good for #56 nationally

Tempo is a modifier.

2. You can make the case that last week was an offensive explosion given the competition (Clemson gave up more yards to us rushing, passing and in total - than everyone else they've played - including Louisville, Auburn, and VaTech). We were top 3 in O vs NC State, and top 2 vs LSU - and were very, very far from playing like we did on Friday night.

Now - I'd love to see it again this week vs another dominant defense. But don't miss out - this offense is trending up.

No because the space between those teams and Robinson’s are enormous.

My argument wasn't that the gap between Marrone and Robinson's teams were similar - just that this years team is putting up numbers unlike all those coaches, sans 2012 Marrone. Also of note - Clemson's D was by far better than any of 2012's opponents.

No - if I were to rank our past 4 coaches, I think you have to go:

1. Babers
2. Marrone
3. Shafer
4.
5.
6.
7. Robinson

I'd put Pasqualoni behind Marrone, then Maloney and Shafer following Coach P.

I was too young to rate Schwartzwalder and only saw the team once or twice. I'd put Coach Mac number 1 for now but Dino if he stays could replace him at #1

Coach Mac is way, way up there for me.
