2013 NYC DE

not short sighted at all. would rather spend the time and monet elsewhere. target a couple key guys and move on. what other school goes all out in nyc?
how hard can it be to "target" NYC at this point? seems that all the D1 prospects come from the same 5 or 6 schools. With the relationships already in place at those schools, the current NYC kids on the roster to help and the close proximity to LI/HV/ and NJ schools & kids that SU needs to be down there recruiting anyway - it seems like a no brainer to target whichever NYC kids are legitimate D1 prospects at this point, even if they may take an extra year or two to be ready to contribute

I just don't see it as an issue or even an either/or type situation :noidea:

Laray Smith for next year is the main target in NYC. Don't know if there is anyone else besides him we are recruiting. We need to land Smith though, kid's tape is tremendous.

One thing about nyc that I've noticed is the relationships between the kids tends be a major recruiting tool. Reddish and Morgan are friends for instance. I thought I read somewhere that Smith and Morgan are friends. Keep the pipeline flowing.

We have great contacts in NYC/LI, why would we ignore them??? Easy to get there from Syracuse. Built in fanbase..Great Athletes.. Produces NFL players..Here's a few NFL players from NYC/LI area:

KEITH BULLOCK-SUFFERN NY -hmmm where did he play college ball????
STEVE GREGORY...Art Monk was from White plains
D'Bricksaw Ferguson
Lyle Alzado
Chris Baker- TE for 8 yrs
Marco Battaglia
Terrel Brown- went to Un. Texas
Chris Canty- plays for the Giants- went to UVA
John Elliott- played 14 years for the Giants and the Jets
Jay Fielder
Boomer Esiason

And one of my all time NFL Favorites - Art Donovan

Here's the link...the list is a mile long with NFL players from NYS- comb through it and find all the kids from NYC/LI area on it. .

http://www.databasefootball.com/players/player_bystate.htm?state=NY

There are a ton of them. Anyone who thinks we shouldn't recruit NYC/LI is nuts.

And we had a guy who was recruiting western NY/PA...
the problem is the majority of the guys on that list are not playing now or were not even afterthoughts in the nfl or college for a lot of them. ishaq did not play this year and notre dame is loaded with what seems to be better talent at OLB and DE. i really don't see him ever playing...of course that would be different at su but at nd he will be a bust. yeah, ferguson is a great player, and so is bullock, but for how big the city is...there should be a lot more talent than there is. the main reason is that there are very, very few quality high school coaches there. i think we are spending more time with nyc and li than anywhere; if we don't land morgan then we might as well scrap nyc altogether. i just see more of a payoff to recruit ohio and pennsylvania harder along with georgia. sec leftovers are going to be better than what we're getting from the current strategy. we've only just started recruiting in georgia because of the recruiting building su just opened in atlanta (or where ever).

Marrone's first five star is probably going to come from NYC.

There's usually one every two/three years, and we're now at a point where SU is mentioned with every prospect/borderline prospect down there. I like the odds.

Don't really mind if the kid won't be a world beater right out of the gate, perception means something, and it's been pointed out the NYC players all know each other anyway.

Well, that's true if you think playing in 10 games as a true freshman means he "did not play" this year.

And Tull came from Xaverian, where Laray is attending IIRC

Thomas Plonski out of brookyn tech. I like his size. Im assuming SU coaches now about him

He was at Rutgers' Junior Day on Saturday, which by the way, was just another opportunity for RU to get a leg up. Say what you will about Schiano, but he continues to think outside the box with regards to recruiting. Holding your first Junior Day while others schools are doing official visits is genius. The list of prospects they had was incredible. I wish HCDM would start to think outside the box with regards to recruiting!!

Everything I've read tells me we are being out worked by Schiano and others. And thats what will be the end of DM... Not losing Conley or having a dance instructor run his offense.

Is Marrone himself being outworked? I thought the guy slept on the couch in the office.

If not, then maybe more changes are in store among the assistants, and people will still kvetch and gripe.

I think holding your junior day in front of 34,616 people against Nova, and getting 100% attendance from invitees is better but hey what do I or Doug Marrone know?

How many years has Schiano been in place and able to establish his recruiting cycle?

Marrone has been very public about how they have been behind the power curve and are just now getting to where they need to be.

Exactly how much information is out there to make a judgment of how SU is being "outworked".

Freakin' Marrone, what an idiot.

Disagree. While I understand why it may seem this way, no football recruit is going to base their college decision on the attendance at a basketball game. While it is a good showcase of fan support, Junior Days should be about showcasing your football program, not your basketball program.

And that is ludicrous. No way that ever happened and if it did, I am even more concerned about recruiting. To me (if true) it means the staff only invited the prospects they knew would come and didn't take a chance on inviting any of the big fish.

Yeah, because showing the game day atmosphere in the stadium where kids are going to play is always a bad thing.

Ehh, I think Deep has a good point. The kids are going to be playing in front of a football crowd, not the biggest basketball crowd of the season. We all know there's a big difference.

I can't really blame Marrone though. I wouldn't want to have a big visit day during a game the way the attendance has been. Might as well show them what could be.

I think Marrone is an old-school guy with an old-school way of doing things. Whether that works in today's 21st century is debatable, but it is what it is. And unfortunately, I'm not sure it's going to change.

I think this is much more about overall philosophy than it is about recruiting areas. I think one of the biggest things that is needed in order to be a successful coach in today's world is adaptability. In coaching on the field, in coaching off the field, and especially in recruiting.

I'm willing to give Marrone a little more time -- he was tossed into a tough spot and needed to change the culture, at whatever cost that was. Bees and certain others may disagree about the tactics used and who was sent packing, but ultimately it produced an 8-5 season in his second year after having gone five years without even sniffing a winning record.

But this past season certainly was not what I expected in a lot of ways. We should have won more games, plain and simple. And a lot of the reasoning behind not winning falls on the laps of the coaching staff, IMO.

They're not showcasing the basketball program. They're giving the kids some on campus entertainment - you know like schady takes kids to time square and espn zone to showcase his football program right?

you guys should dominate the eastern block of the new CUSA - good luck.
