In prioritizing the safety and well-being of all members of the campus community, Syracuse University today announced that the men's lacrosse team will not participate in the Deyhontsigwa'ehs The Creator's Game, Lacrosse Weekend.

During the past week, the University has been working closely with New York state and Onondaga County Health Department officials due to confirmed cases of mumps that were identified among its student population. At least one member of the men's lacrosse team is confirmed to have mumps.

"After much discussion, and out of an abundance of caution, we've reached the hard decision to withdraw our team's participation in the lacrosse event this weekend," says John Wildhack, director of athletics. "We are disappointed our student-athletes won't be able to participate in Sunday's games. Ultimately, we prioritized the health of our student-athletes, our scrimmage opponent athletes, the Syracuse University student body, our community and beyond, when reaching this decision."

Since confirming the positive mumps diagnoses, and under the direction of the Office of Health Services, the University immediately activated its strong response protocol. This included isolating the potentially infected students, sanitizing all areas with which the students came in contact and notifying all people who may have interacted with the affected students.

Lacrosse weekend organizers announce new scrimmage schedule at the Carrier Dome

Albany has stepped in to pinch-hit for Syracuse University for a set of lacrosse scrimmages Sunday in the Carrier Dome.

As part of the Deyhontsigwa'ehs The Creator's Game Lacrosse Weekend, Albany will take on Team Israel and the Iroquois Nationals.

The schedule is as follows:

• Game 1: 10:30 a.m.-11:30 a.m. Iroquois vs Israel
• Game 2: noon-1 p.m. Albany vs Israel
• Game 3: 1:30-2:30 p.m. Albany vs Iroquois

Shame. Would have been productive scrimmages especially against Iroquois. Good to know that University has protocol n quick response teams in place but cancellation seems overly cautious as I assume players are still practicing after the sanitization. Perhaps it was the opposing teams that wished to take no chances Understandable , know mumps are contagious but aint Ebola n quick actions had already been deployed. Oh well, maybe scrimmages can be rescheduled

I fully understand/agree with SU erring on the side of caution, but this is really unfortunate & frankly, a big missed opportunity.

Since it was announced, the Iroquois-SU scrimmage had been a big deal amongst the Native lax community. It would've been great evaluation for our coaches, as the international/historic aspect would've made it much more competitive/spirited than our alumni scrimmage. Add to that Miles/Lyle playing against SU & this would've been a spectacle & a great test for our players. Now, it allows Albany to get their foot even further in the door of the Native lax community.

I'm interested to see who plays for the Iroquois. All the Thompsons will be in town for the box showcase so I'm sure they'll suit up. I wonder if Randy Staats plays and, more interestingly, Austin, who's listed on the Nationals' roster.

Throw in Tehoka, and they might be unbeatable into championship weekend. No surprise, most people expected them to be good going into this season based on what they brought back from last year, Ierlan, and Nanticoke. The good news if there is any is that Albany will lose a ton to graduation next year including Fields, the goalie, 2/3rds of the starting attack and close defense and more. Going to be tough with what they are brining in but they lose a lot.

Agree. Want to reiterate that I don't believe they've jumped us as a program in anyway, and probably can't given the unique advantages the dome and ACC bring. That said, they have put together a great group of seniors, which unfortunately for us cuse fans, lines up with what will be a rebuilding year for us... and we play them early. Not sure we will have all our parts aligned fully be then. New goalie, new offensive leaders, new Fogo. Gonna take time in 2018.

I expect Bomberry to get moved back to midfield. Bomberry can play attack but its clearly not his strong suit. After Desko moved him there correctly I might add to help the overall offense his production dropped like a rock into a canyon. He was pretty much our leading scorer for the first handful of games and after he moved I think he had one maybe two decent games but for the most part he was a non factor. He's much more comfortable playing a middie where he can play around the crease but is going to draw a shorty versus a close defender. Some will probably disagree but I think moving him back is a no brainer.

As for the attack that third sport is a total mystery. Wisnaukas bailing after sitting out the entire year really hurts and I think was completely unexpected. Not a lot of thrilled SU staff members to say the least. He really threw a wrench into the staffs plans. Based on him leaving I think Rehfuss becomes pretty much a lock to start along with Solomon. So what about that third spot, well at this point I give a slight edge to Seebold. Wisnauskas and Thorpe are gone and Burt is more of a project guy from what I know. That really leaves it down to the incoming frosh and Voigt. Voigt is a nice player who can adds a welcome element to the man up unit but I don't see him a starter on the attack unit. He is decent in most offensive aspects but doesn't really excel anywhere and Bomberry can play the same middle/crease sort of position from the midfield. Unless Forkin is somehow playing out of his mind after his injury last year I think your looking at one of the frosh or keeping Bomberry there. Personally I would rather go with one of the new guys because Bomberry to me is completely wasted at attack and would give SU a pretty weak unit by its normal standards. Keep in mind Rehfuss isn't going to be able to sneak up on anyone, he's going to have to really elevate his game as he's likely to start drawing #1 defenders. With Wisnaukas gone I expect SU will move one of the incoming middies to attack for depth purposes and to compete for that third spot. If I had to guess I would say Curry is the most logical option and then probably Lauder. I think Nelson is a lock to redshirt. Next year with Cook, Berkman, Aburn and fingers crossed Staats the unit will have a major influx of talent.

For wing play I am starting to think our positioning is out of whack. To many times SU has moved a guy to the wing and he looks great for the first few games and then slowly starts regressing to the inconsistency we have seen for the last decade. Someone pointed out astutely last year that SU was having there wing guys line up either rway off or running away from the scrum often having it end up being a 3-2 situation against SU. For this season I have heard real good things about Fernandez and if he doesn't redshirt I think he could see some run there. I don't have a problem playing some of the D guys way down the depth chart there. Would give them a purpose on gameday instead of having to wait on an injury and allow them to really hone in on developing some techniques/skill for the position. At SSDM I wouldn't mind seeing Helmer with a shortstick, he loves to be physical and scrum it up. Perfect guy for a wing player.

I would guess Solomon, Rehfuss, Bomberry (with sprinkling of Voigt and eventually Seebold).

Martin would be interesting. He had a unique skill set coming out of HS in that he was seemingly first a face off guy, then developed his offensive game, all while being a very good multi-sport athlete. The skills required of the face off wings are GBs, being able to handle the ball, play defense when you lose the face off. It seems like he has that skill set, but I think what the SU coaches are finding is they need guys on the wings who play with a certain attitude (relentless pursuit of the ball, physicality) as well. I think Schwasnick and Paduda earned time because of their attitude when playing on the wings, not because of their abundance of skill. They tried Martin with a long stick last year, but it didn't result in any playing time. I always root for the midwest kids on the roster, so I hope he makes an impact on the field at some point.

Chavez got a little playing time last year. Dilts was a crease defenseman in high school. He's probably not a vacuum on GBs. Edwards didn't come in very highly regarded.

Hopefully this is an area of focus, because none of the FOGOs are going to win 60%.

Any word on D Brett Kennedy? There was talk that he really impressed the staff & would've earned time as a Frosh had he not suffered the season ending injury.

I haven't heard much about him this fall but I suspect he is in the mix as I believe hes fully recovered from his knee surgery or close to it.
