2017-18 Fall Ball / Mumps Ball / Preseason Ball

LOL, that would require them to be proactive for a change. For the spring scrimmages I am thrilled if we can get a box score at this point.
You can count on word of mouth and a short story with like 2 glimpse of the scrimmage...

I wanted to share this with you folks because I thought you'd appreciate it.

We didn't scrimmage against another team this fall; we only had an alumni game. This is from Coach Lars Tiffany's e-mail newsletter he sends to former players. One of them posts it on the Sabre (I assume with Lars' permission). As many of you may know he has deep ties to the Native community in CNY.

"This past weekend’s Alumni Game was presented as a healing medicine game. This is consistent with the true origins of the game of lacrosse which was always referred to as a game of good medicine and healing, played for the benefit of the community-at-large. The events of August 11 – 12 here in Charlottesville, VA prompted us to choose this route. Words for community wellness for Charlottesville and UVA were provided by Cody Hall (Cheyenne River Miniconjou/Hunkpapa from Eagle Butte, South Dakota). Cody and his Očéti Šakówiŋ Sports Council manage the 7 Flames Lacrosse program, a non-profit that supports the cultural tradition and future of the game in Indian Country. Cody spoke with our men before the game in UHall, discussing issues of social and racial justice. Joining him were two younger members of his program, Pearl and Angelo, who also provided their thanks for the game of lacrosse and for being a part of our Alumni Game. Our men responded with their points of view and discussed how we can serve as agents of change. On the field, a few minutes before game time, Cody and his assistants performed a sage smudging ritual for each man of both teams, who stood in a large circle around the faceoff X. As this was happening, I addressed the crowd providing insight into the meaning of the day’s game and sharing some words of the Haudenosaunee Thanksgiving Address. "

Syracuse Health Setbacks

The mumps situation in Syracuse definitely grabbed my attention. I guess it’s not that surprising since diseases like that are known to spread quickly amongst those in close quarters, like a bunch of students or teammates, and I guess this shows my ignorance with mumps since I thought most everyone was vaccinated for such a health concern and thus it was pretty rare and not that contagious. In terms of lacrosse though, this feels like a big setback for the program. As Terry Foy mentioned after making a trip up to CNY, a lot of instruction goes on at Orange practices, particularly in the fall. For a team that lost some key guys and now needs to develop their next rising stars, losing the majority of a fall development season seems huge. I’m sure guys are still working on their own, and who knows, maybe having a semester away from the game will make them hit the new season hard, but if they struggle early, this could be a big reason why.

That Syracuse Can't Practice

I was at the Orange's first day of practice, and I came away thinking “This team looks better than most people expect them to be.” Without an opponent, however, there's no baseline to compare Cuse to, so I was really looking forward to their performances vs. the Iroquois Nationals, alumni, Maryland and Stony Brook. In one of the oddest stories I can recall, however, an outbreak of mumps has prompted the suspension of team activities, so the first time we get to compare Syracuse to an outside opponent will be in the spring.
The fact that the mumps are still prevalent enough that an outbreak can occur, and that it materially impacted this Syracuse team, is my surprise of fallball.

Transfers seem to love the terps.

Makes sense if he wants to say in the Maryland area but your right they have become the new hot destination the last few years.

Call in the ncaa there's something fishy going on!!!!!

Oh wait the ncaa doesn't care.

Eh, thinking it's more just the result of their title & them graduating a bunch of seniors. The Terps are one of the top brands in College Lax & have quite a bit of PT to offer. Some realize they're not cut-out for a service academy after a semester of prepping.

That was just a joke...lol

Figured I would post this here -

Staff Debate: Based on Fallball, Who is Your Dark Horse Team for 2018?

"Terry Foy (@TerenceFoy)
Acknowledging our role as “expectation setters” by virtue of producing Face-Off Yearbook, I cruised the message boards to glean which fanbases' hopes are hanging low heading into 2018.

Can't call them a dark horse, ever, but the Top 20 team I think will exceed expectations is Syracuse. I can understand Orange fans' concern. First, they won such a high percentage of their one-goal games, they must regress to the mean (wink, wink). Second, they graduated their two most reliable scorers in Sergio Salcido and Nick Mariano, plus a top-flight face-off specialist in Ben Williams and an All-American defender in Scott Firman. Add to that the departure of some young talent via transfer, and there are reasonable questions about the Orange's talent overall.

All those concerns were present prior to a fall's worth of missed practices due to a health scare outside the team's control, and it might seem like too much to overcome.

But having been to a Syracuse practice in September prior to the suspension of team activities, I saw the seeds of a good team. Austin Fusco has the makeup of a good leader. Nate Solomon has the persona of a burgeoning star, and Bradley Voigt and Stephen Rehfuss have the background of emerging stalwarts. Danny Varello leads a competitive group at the face-off X. There's experience defensively with Tyson Bomberry, Nick Mellen and Marcus Cunningham and at the midfield with Brendan Bomberry, Matt Lane and Ryan Simmons. And the freshmen are fast and athletic."

“Fall” practice resuming on Monday for the men’s team. Going to get a couple weeks in before finals. Glad they will get some work, don’t believe the women’s team has been cleared to resume organized practice.

Hope they get the full 3 weeks back, or as much as possible.

Love that video! Pumped for the season! It interests me whe. We have a so called reload year to see who steps up and to seee the Frosh in action!

You certainly earned your pay this week. :p

Brendan Curry, Grant Murphy and the transfer from Nazareth are missing.

No Brett Kennedy, Drake Porter, Dom Madonna or Josh Pulver?

Can't be the full roster.

It’s not an official roster I have gone off what the new guys have posted their numbers as on social media (and from yesterdays video) and the existing 16/17 squad numbers, players missing are because they haven’t posted their number or if existing players have changed their number (freshman now have their number).

Someone is wearing #10in video it maybe Curry.

Pulver graduated.

Madonna wore 26 last year

Pretty sure in the video you can see #17 in the back with a long stick and a bulky knee brace. For my money that sounds like Brett Kennedy.

Kennedy and Curry are 100% on the team.
