2017 Yankees Off Season / Spring Training Thread...

With Dellin Betances headed back to a setup role, to give a sense what an elite, non-closer reliever is worth in fantasy, the past eight relievers with 100-plus strikeouts, a sub-2.50 ERA and single-digit saves finished as RPs 20, 40, 13 (Betances, 2014), 16, 40, 41, 18 (Betances, 2015) and 25 on the Player Rater. Though they're difficult to identify in advance, these are immensely undervalued assets in fantasy year after year.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman said that with the pending Aroldis Chapman deal, he is mostly tapped out of money for this winter.

When asked to describe the predictability of relievers over five years, Cashman said they are "volatile," but the market said that Chapman needed five years.

Yankees GM Brian Cashman wants to improve the starting rotation but the trade market has been too unforgiving and the free agent list is thin.

Scott Lauber ESPN Staff Writer
Dave Dombrowski didn't exactly call the Yankees "the Golden State Warriors" after the Aroldis Chapman signing, but the Red Sox honcho did say this: "I wish that somebody else would have made him a better offer so he would have gone somewhere else, for sure. No question."

Yankees GM Brian Cashman has been pessimistic about adding another starter. It seems possible he could add another bullpen piece.

Rarity in Aroldis Chapman's contract
Chapman is only the second free-agent reliever since 1990 to get a five-year deal, ESPN Stats & Info notes. The other was B.J. Ryan, who signed a five-year, $47 million pact with the Blue Jays in Nov. 2005. Ryan made it through only 3 1/2 years of his deal before he was released.

Padres load up in Rule 5 draft, acquire RHP Diaz

Yankees GM Brian Cashman has repeatedly said he is pessimistic about adding another quality starter this winter. That, of course, won't cool down the Hot Stove with the latest re-linking the Yankees to the White Sox Jose Quintana. Cashman touches base for nearly every available player; especially when it is need base. However, the White Sox want a boatload of prospects. The Yankees have been disinclined to trade any of them so, unless that changes, it seems unlikely Quintana will end up in the Bronx.

Midwinter report card: Sale swap puts both Sox teams at head of the class

New York Yankees -- Grade: B+

Offseason goals: Controllable starter, closer, DH.

Key acquisitions to date: LHP Aroldis Chapman, LF/1B Matt Holliday, RHP Albert Abreu, RHP Jorge Guzman, RHP Zack Littell.

The Yankees were able to bring Chapman back on a record-breaking five-year, $86 million deal that includes a no-trade clause the first three years of the contract, and they solved the DH opening by signing Holliday. Holliday will help the Yankees immensely in the clubhouse and will be a tremendous mentor for some of the Yankees’ top prospects, including Aaron Judge and Greg Bird. GM Brian Cashman continues to stockpile arms for their farm system in trades, while holding onto his first-round draft picks instead of signing free agents that would have eliminated his. While continuing their long-term rebuilding program, the Yankees are staying on course and should be wild-card contenders in 2017.

We need another starting pitcher IMO!
Yep, it doesn't sound like it's going to happen. For now, it's:

1. Tanaka
2. Sabathia
3. Pineda

Cessa, Green, Mitchell, Severino, and maybe Warren will battle for the final two spots.

This rotation doesn't say "win now."

that and the lineup says...win enough.

WC would be nice, then win it.

How much does Sabathia have left in the tank?
he started to make an Andy Pettitte transformation last year, if he can continue that, then 12-15 Ws and maybe 4.00 era would be great.

obviously the path to success is...

- healthy Tanaka
- 30 starts for Pineda with minimal 'head' issues
- Severino get back to what he was as a rook
- Sabathia see above
- patch together Cessa, Green and Mitchell

I think Warren stays in the pen, but would be ok with him winning the 5th job.

FWIW: my $$ is on Mitchell

And for Mateo to tear it up early and often this year in the minors. I think he's the guy they hope to trade at top value.
