2021-22 Yankees Off Season / Spring Training ...

Why the Yankees pitching staff is embracing a new slider and how the ‘whirly’ is different from a traditional slider

It’s behind the paywall, but if you’re not reading The Athletic, what are you reading?

It’s often thrown with a two-seam grip, works the horizontal plane more than a typical slider does, and is developed to play off of true two-seam fastballs using a recently discovered scientific theory called seam-shifted wake.

Those around the Yankees organization are calling this type of slider a whirly. Elsewhere, it’s becoming known as a sweeper. Whatever it is, Yankees pitchers are finding that it’s getting them soft contact and strikeouts, and it’s a sharp example of the way the sport continues to evolve based on developments in technology and statistical research.

Ok now I know for sure you all have been making up players for me, there's no way this guy is a Yankee

Banuelos pitched far better than JP Sears. Don't get that decision.
