Cano was at best an average player. But you forgot to mention the Mets paid him one of the highest salaries in baseball while he was here. And they still have to pay him $40 million more before he is off the books. Imagine how much more could have been done with that $90 million (not sure of the exact number but it is around there). It could have been used so much more productively. The Mets took one of the worst contracts in MLB taking Cano on and had to shoulder that burden for 4 years. Edwin Diaz has been an enormous disappointment. Has any closer blown as many saves as he had since he joined the Mets? I doubt it. The guy has talent but to date, he has been pretty terrible as a Met. Justin Dunn didn't just fall off the face of the earth. He is now on the Cincinnati Reds. He was a big part of a trade last winter that got the Mariners Eugenio Suarez and Jesse Winker. He strained his shoulder last June and has not pitched since, which had put a hold on a promising start to his career. Suarez has 196 HRs, 551 RBIs and a .251 lifetime batting average and is 30 years old. He has had over 100 RBI twice so far, made an all star team and hit 49 HRs in another season. Winker is 28, has 66 HRs and a lifetime batting average of .283. He was an all star last season, when he hit .308 with 24 HRs. Kelenic was rushed to the big leagues last year and played badly. Hit .181. He continues to struggle, hitting .141 this year. Probably needs to be sent down to AAA for a key months to figure things out. He only has 143 ABs at AAA so far. Even if he never figures it out (he is 22, there is plenty of time for that), and even if Justin Dunn has his promising career end at the age of 25, just being forced to take on Cano's enormous salary for essentially nothing makes this a bad trade. If Kelenic and Dunn play even somewhat close to their potential, yes, this will go down as one of if not the worst trade in the history of baseball.
