Some pitchers have a slow, smooth, rolling motion. Max is a howitzer. He pitched 3.2 innings only coming out because of a pitch count, (he threw 59). Of the 11 outs he got, 7 were strike-out, mostly on swinging strikes. His highest velocity was in the mid-90's, which was normal for him. He gave up a home run with nobody on. It looked like a fly-out to right field but just caried and carried. Kalil Lee leapt for it but it was just out of his reach. (Lee made a couple of great sliding catches later in the game. Too bad that he's hitting .211). Max gave up two singles, a line drive to center and a blooper to left and walked a guy. If he feels OK, I would assume that he'll make his next start for the big Mets and again go for win #200. Alvarez was 0 for 3 and is now batting .179. He walked and was hit by a pitch on the wrist. he was in considerable pain for a time but stayed in the game. Still, he flexed the wrist several times after that, and I hope there wasn't something worse than they realized about it. He goes deep in the count and his OBP is almost double his batting average but when he swings, he's trying to put the lights out and his bat winds up pointing at the umpire's left foot, (he's a right-handed hitter). I saw him almost pick off a guy at first throwing from his knees. He also tried that to second, but the ball bounced past the second baseman into center field. The centerfielder bobbled it, then thew the guy out trying to score. it was a 'strike 'em out, throw 'em out from center field double play. The home run Scherzer gave up held up until the SMets tied it up in the 8th inning but we gave up a run, (the 'free' runner), in the top of the tenth. We had the tying run on third and the winner on first with two out when Dom Smith looked at a third strike and pounded the ground with his bat in frustration. The crowd was actually small, probably due to the late announcement that Scherzer would be pitching. the evening was comfortable of the most part but in the late innings a cool northwest wind made its presence felt.
