2022 Yankees Season

It really won't be long before balls and strikes are called electronically. But even then, people will find reason to bitch about something.

As for last night's game, that home plate umpire was hosing hitters on both teams, but it's the last hosing that gets the most attention.

I understand that. And like I said, it's been that way for a long time. The technology behind the strike zone box needs some work. Half the time I see the top of the zone is only belt high. Regardless of the source of the error, that needs to be corrected and made more consistent as well.

Yes, how they define an equitable strike zone will be the tricky part.

Yeah I wondered about that too. It has to be some sort of optical illusion when they are showing the box on TV in 2 dimensions (or something). Using Stanton as an example, when he swings at pitches that appear just at the top of the box or a little above that, it appears he is swinging at pitches that are shoulder high which is not in the strike zone. But those are often called strikes. More egregious though are pitches below the knees (Judge) or pitches that are outside the zone that are called strikes. When they showed the 4th pitch to Torres last night from the overhead camera, it was at least 6 inches off the plate. Again, it could be an optical illusion, but those calls are the most frustrating for me as a fan. I guess it goes both ways (last pitch in the Tampa game on Sunday) so you just have to live with it.

When Don Larsen threw his WS perfect game in 1956, the last pitch for the final strikeout (on a checked swing) was called into question. According to the legend, the umpire's response was, "Under the circumstances, it was close enough. "

Second hicks doubled leading to 1st being open , I knew yanks were hozed.
At the time I was thinking the Yankees were cooked no matter what Hicks does (other than hit a 2 run HR) in that situation because they would walk Judge anyway and take their chances with Torres and IKF. Man that lineup SUCKS.

It's been like that for as long as I can remember. The only real question is, given the advent of more modern technology, why is it allowed to continue? I think there's a way to figure it out, but I don't believe there's a will to do it.
There is an easy fix to the strike zone problem, have the best umps work strictly behind the plate.
There are some umps that are spot on calling balls and strikes and a lot of terrible ones at calling games. How about having some kind of school that teaches nothing but calling balls and strikes and that’s the only thing they do? Have the other three take care of the rules of the game and everything but the balls and strikes.I dont believe it would be that hard to come up with 15 or 20 guys in this country that could actually be good at that.

I think it’s a lot more physically grueling behind home plate. These guys are not exactly world-class athletes.

That’s why I’m suggesting a school to train young guys that are good at calling balls and strikes. That would basically be their only job, let the other three handle everything else that comes along in handling a baseball game. We don’t need 60 year old guys that are naturally aging and losing eyesight behind home plate.

It's not that easy. HP umpire specifically assigned to HP would need some type of hazard pay for being pelted with foul balls and then having all that gear on during swelter summers in places like Chicago & St Louis. Plus they will get the most grief compared to other umpires. You in a sense would be making a judgement on all umpires and the MLBUA would not sign off on that, Also the HP is responsible for all calls when the balls don't reach past 1st or 3rd base. I like the current rotation as is as it allows you to see / scout the next umpire as they have tendencies (good and bad) just like the players.

You like balls 10 inches outside the zone called strikes? Some of these guys have no business behind the plate. MLB has enough money to train young guys to get the damn calls right.
Even the best won’t get them all correct, but there are some darn good umpires that call a very good game. How about MLB try and do a better job of keeping these guys that ruin a game away from the dish?

Anybody but Guzman. Might even be worthwhile to try Donaldson there until Rizzo or Lemahieu can get back.
Tino looks in pretty good shape. Maybe he'd be interested.

Yep, he's just flailing. Not to brag, but I called every pitch in that sequence. Why can't they see this?
That PH performance must have been too much for Mr. Glass. Not in the lineup tonight. DFA him.
