2023/2024 Syracuse Transfer Portal Entries

These guys left during or after the 2023 season:
Kevon Darton
Damien Alford
Stefon Thompson
Leon Lowery
Mekhi Mason
Jeremiah Wilson
Myles Farmer
Bralyn Oliver
Quan Peterson
Destin Hawkins
Ike Daniels
Aman Greenwood
Malcolm Folk
Jakobie Seabourn
Josiah Jeffery
Wes Hoeh
Isaiah Jones
Steven Mahar Jr.
Terry Lockett
Francois Nolton

These guys left before Spring practice:
Kendall Long
Muwaffaq Parkman
Khalib Gilmore
JJ Branham
Max von Marburg
Austin Roon
Austyn Kauhi
Belizaire Bassette

That's 28 so far.
A couple of the guys I would have thought could have found homes, seem to still be in the portal.

Thought 8 to 12, but after Fran’s comments about a lack of mental toughness and players stating how it use to be different maybe more.
Some guys that don’t have the talent to make it to the two deep might realize that all of the hard work required to be on the SU football team under this new staff might not be worth it.

Seeing this thread get bumped made me curious where our transfers from last year ended up. I know some were medically DQ'd and a lot of them likely got "the talk" and might not have had much say in it.

Happy to see pretty much everyone landed somewhere and got to continue their education on a scholarship (which is my main concern with the proliferation of the portal).

Some of these guys had great seasons - Josiah Jeffery was a DII All Conference selection!

Lot of hand wringing over some of these departures last year, doesn’t look like a ton of production from any of these guys even at lower levels. What did Alford do at Utah? He was the 2nd coming of Randy Moss according to some here

Somehow forgot to add him. He played in 4 games with no stats.

You're right though, in recent years it seems like things haven't panned out at their next stop for most of the guys we thought were going to be big losses.

My sense is A LOT more kids end up doing about as well or worse than do better.

FIFY.

Also, more telling - note how few of the transfers OUT ended up at P4 programs.

So yeah, some of these young men had nice seasons,
but only after dropping down a level or 2 (or more) from P4.

Which is more evidence that Dino’s recruiting was pretty mediocre.

My friend is a Utah fan, and he said their approach to WR transfers for the 2024 season was, "bring in a bunch of P4 guys and see what sticks."

Personally, i think with Fran living DART the coaching staff has to be really careful who they recruit to the program. HS and Portal. They have to be really careful with who they pay and how they pay. Bringing a kid in from the outside and paying up for him better work. Meaning the kid better be worth the money and better be a good leader. If not, you will create major problems. Just ask FSU. A few strategic portal kids are fine but most of the NIL needs to be spent on retention.

Thank you for putting the list together. Helps to give a prospective on our recruiting.

Dino did a good job of bringing 2 or 3 guys a year who blossomed into stars - Tucker, OG, Allen, etc.

The hope is that Fran continues this, but is also able to raise the floor on depth / role players.

Per IthacaMatt the top 5 or 6 guys had the talent to help us. Oliver showed excellent speed and size in last year's spring game, not sure why it didn't work out - happy he's doing well. Lowry and Thompson (post injury) were clearly talented but went bag hunting. Alford is an enigma. The rest either weren't a fit for ERob's scheme (Gordon, Lockett, Darton), or were better suited for non-P4 competition (Hoeh, More, Bass, Mason), et al. Always want to see these guys succeed wherever they wind up, but many don't seem to be doing much.

Coming out of HS, I thought Alford was a can’t miss. The shame of it is I do believe he might have blossomed under HCDB and Nixon, with McCord. We will never know.
