Big changes to the faceoff are on the horizon. TLDR

“… multiple sources tell Inside Lacrosse that discussions have been raised about the possibility of shortening the 80-second shot clock after face-off wins to 60 seconds.”

And

“ Another rule introduced into the topics of discussion is the possibility of eliminating clamps during face-offs. Instead of a clamp leading to control and possession, coaches proposed that players would instead swipe at the ball to create a groundball situation.”

Seems to be they are just delaying the inevitable of getting rid of the faceoff completely. They keep trying to change the rules to make it more “even” but players always find a way to be dominant. They need to just rip the bandaid off. All these little tweaks just seem ridiculous at this point.

Hell bent to continue to ruin a great sport
Doesn’t the faceoff, as currently constituted, already do that? Make-it, take-it is fine for the school yard basketball court, but one small aspect of a game shouldn’t completely dictate the outcome as it so often does these days. Syracuse wins the 2013 national championship by 10 if the faceoffs were even close to equal. But one kid in one small aspect of the game won what is supposed to be a 10v10 team sport for Duke.

figure out how to play against great fogos better. get better wing play. be better at gbs. pressure the fogo. cut off outlets.

coaches are idiots here. there should be a czar with veto power on stupidity.

I’m fine with doing away with it wouldn’t bother me a bit the problem is with the rules committee need to constantly change the game. This latest suggested version won’t last long and how many more versions will we have to endure before they do get rid of it. Lacrosse use to be naturally fast naturally exciting now we need to impose a new rule for every nuance of the game because it’s become incredibly specialized and overcoached

Hard disagree. Face offs (while certainly not perfect per the rules) and ground balls are critical components of the game. Always have been. Success in both translates to wins.
the easiest rule change has always been move the wings in 5 yards. we're way past time where the only coaches allowed on rules committees should be those who recruit good faceoff guys. so they'll give us some air.

Not a big lax fan, but why does the fastest game on two feet slow itself down after every goal? Take the ball out of the net and go,

Make it similar to bball. Alternating positions each quarter and after scores.
Did that in the 70s. Everyone thought it sucked. IIRC there was a faceoff to start the game and maybe the 2nd half (or each quarter?). After a goal, a defender was given the ball on the restraining line and the offensive players usually were between the restraining and midfield lines. JHU adopted the "We want more" count-up from Cornell back then. During the no-faceoff experiment, some fans started yelling "faceoffs" after the "We want more".

This will bring back the "Rake" technique. It's so old and out-of-date, I couldn't find it on YouTube to use in this discussion on our board. It's not like raking a ground ball. The FOGO pulls his stick across his body while taking a step with his right foot (for balance) in an attempt to get the ball out toward a wing. It wasn't used a lot and was done in by the moto grip.

60 seconds off a face off is a good change that should have happened sooner. Teams start with less than 80 seconds after they clear it down field so it should be more even if they make that change at the X. Didn’t go too crazy with the time difference like the PLL.

I’m just going to assume the whole completely changing the face off move doesn’t happen again. It just can’t. No more of this beyond stupid bs. Hopefully the total collective outrage from nearly all lax fans has an impact. It has worked before with other idiotic proposed rule changes. They will come to their senses eventually.

That’s fair

Just change the stick specs - no pinched sidewalls and offset head.

Eliminate the duramesh fishing nets through enforcement.

Keep the faceoff and 60 second shot clock (if it’s still needed).

Could move the wings in to, say to 5-10 yards.

*edit - see now you already suggested that. Makes too much sense.

I personally love the face off. Keep it.

Not a lax purist like you guys but I hate it...Kids win the draw (or lose it) then run off the field and don't play the game.

I'm a lacrosse neophyte compared to most of you, but I would support measures to limit the importance of the face off. Reduce the initial shot clock down to 60 seconds (you're not clearing) and do one of/some combination of adjust the ball position so the clamp is harder to get, regulate the face off heads more, move the wings in, and/or mandate that the person taking the face off stay on for at least one possession (with their deformed fo head).

At the youth level, the position is dominated by kids who have access (aka money) to the best and most specialized coaching. That seems antithetical to "growing the game" (I'm not sure how sincere the powers that be are about the proposition anyway).

maybe do something radical.. Start the 2 guys in a circle 2 ft from the ball and blow the whistle. But also if you start on the faceoff no one can leave until the ball changes possession or goes out of bounds or something.

Maybe make the faceoff player limited like timeouts? Your faceoff specialist can be used 5 times per game or whatever number works best. It may get more players on the field and cut down on specialization. Teams could ”save” their FOGO for moments when it really matters. If a team get off to a great start at the faceoff the coach would have to decide wether to exhaust FOGO eligibility or substitute to have the option later in the game.

The Oklahoma drill, essentially
