2024-25 NBA Season / Playoffs

If Troy Weaver is advising Joe Dumars, he did not learn much during his failed tenure in Detroit. What was that trade last night?

I like Queen (think I had him #6 on my final board), but man, that's a weird fit and I don't know why New Orleans has so much faith that they'll be good next year. That trade had to be made under the assumption that they'll be in the playoffs next season and while they could theoretically make it if things go right, it feels like a less than 50% proposition.

I saw a rumor on a Jazz forum that the Hawks promised Asa Newell they drafted him, traded out of their pick to pick up that unprotected first rounder, and then somehow still get him at #23.

If true, wild they pulled that off.

The New Orleans trade is truly one of the more baffling trades I can remember. What are the odds New Orleans conveys a pick better than 13 next year? 75%?
It really is baffling.

They must really, really like Queen.

But it sure seems like they got played.

The only reason I don't think I'm willing to go THAT high yet is because they admittedly suffered from a ton of injuries last year, but it also feels like a losing proposition to be betting on Zion staying healthy, Dejounte is returning from a torn achilles, and Trey Murphy might not be healthy for the start of the season sooooo yeah. I'd say odds are they are a lottery team but IF Zion can stay healthy and IF Dejounte returns and is close to his usual self and IF Murphy returns and is his usual self, they could get into the playoffs. They're only a year removed from nearly winning 50 games.

I'd probably say like 60-65% chance they're giving up a lottery pick though.

I admit I made up the number so maybe it’s a little high, but….

Murray tore his Achilles at the end of January; he may not play all year. The west is loaded.

Also there is the optionality with the bucks pick; it sure looks like giannis is staying but 1) maybe he doesn’t? 2) he could get hurt.

I do think it’s much more likely they’re sending their own pick but you never know. And all this for queen.

I think your last sentence is the ultimate question - Queen may turn out to be good but his old man game could also bust and they plan to play him with Zion?

If they thought he was that great to include a potential top 5 pick next year, they should have just drafted him with their first pick
Exactly. Just wild really, I think if they stink again this year they will sell everything off and get some picks back. Trey Murphy will still have 3 years left on a really good contract, Herb Jones would probably get a decent return as well. Who knows with Zion or Murray but at least protect the 26 pick top 5, good lord

I mean the stockpiled all sorts of draft picks with David Griffin and got nowhere with it. Now they are doing just the opposite. I will say this Queen will be loved down there even if he has modest success, he's a great fit with his personality a for New Orleans community but the trade was reckless to say the least and if he turns out to be really good it's still crazy considering the situation in Milwaukee. I have little doubt that one of the Bucks or Pels picks will be top 5.

I think Dumars is going to take huge shots and if it doesn't work he will be fired in 2-3 years and retire. I don't think he is looking to play the long game. Not going to be much gray area. That said, If they win 35 games this year, Willie Green, Zion, anyone left from the old regime will be traded or fired. It's no secret that Willie Green is loved by owner Gayle Benson and him being from Detroit didn't hurt with Dumars. If it were up to Gayle Benson 100% I think Zion would have been traded a year ago. The porn star/ allegations etc doesn't sit well with her and I don't think that's really a big secret.

Yeah, if god forbid Giannis does get traded, this is instantly a major loss because the Bucks will probably be terrible (and even if he doesn't, all it takes is one injury and we're probably toast).

If Giannis stays and plays, it'll almost certainly be the Pelicans pick that gets conveyed. Like I said, probably better than 50% odds that they're in the lottery, and as we just saw with Dallas and San Antonio, all you need is to be in there and that pick can jump.

I don't really think it's a defensible trade even if they like Queen as much as I do. Even beyond the question of whether or not Queen will translate, the fit next to Zion is, being charitable here, interesting lol. I think Queen can defend in similar ways that Jokic does where he's not going to protect the rim but he'll probably get his hands on some passes here and there. But unless Zion shows a commitment to defense that he's frankly never shown before, I don't see how a team built around Zion, Queen, Poole (and possibly Fears if he's thrust into things quickly) avoids being a bottom 5-10 defensive team.

Zion and Queen do give them maybe the best frontcourt in the league from a creating off the dribble standpoint though and they're both good passers when they get downhill too. It could be a lot of fun to watch on offense but I am highly skeptical that it will get them to the playoffs unless they have other moves up their sleeves.

I would love to know what those negotiations were like because it feels like even protecting it for like the top 10 picks or even for the lottery should have still been enough to get the deal done.

So over Reinsdorf and his billion dollar cheap ways…

Coating his pockets with cash. Such a cheapskate. The worst owner. Another year of suiting up Cash Considerations…

With Fatty McFat's health record that's not a bet I'd make.

Tate Fraser was intimating that this trade was above Dumars . The ownership wanted it. How he knows ? I don’t know
