2024-25 NHL THREAD.

great game

USA got hosed by the refs in ot

Clear icing they ignore
8 men on the ice they ignored
then marginal icing the call leads to a goal

Bennington saved it for them though
Compared to most NHL games of the past 2-3 years, that was a masterclass in officiating.

USA lost their heads at the wrong time. Refs, thankfully, had nothing to do with the outcome.

When I read a story about the books preferring Canada wins I put my $ on the hosers. Emotional hedge.

Phenomenal game, congrats Canada.

Game really opened up in OT and Matthews (unsurprisingly) choked twice and blew it defensively for Team USA. Hilarious when he’s wearing a Maple Queafs jersey, hurts like hell in a USA sweater.

Maybe don’t take 3.5 mediocre Rangers to Italy next year if you’re unwilling to scratch a clearly injured Tkachuk.
Ya I am no expert but it definitely seemed like sub-optimal roster management.

Between that & KC I wish I didn't win so many of them. But even without that i'm not sure how they were +175 after Saturday.

Much preferred to Doc Emerick's endless supply of Ricochets & Caroms with seven and three quarter minutes remaining.
I couldn’t stand listening to Doc Emrick. Of course , I was raised listening to Bob Cole and Harry Neale. Best in the business

Mathew’s was puck chasing on McDavids goal. He drifted in to the corner to get the Canadian player with the puck, who already had a US player ready to collapse on him. Puck gets fed to McDavid, wide open, game over.
McDavid was his man
it was marner who had the puck in the corner. Matthews was ridiculously lax there. It you aren’t going to cover 97 then you cannot let the pass get through from 16. He did neither. Half hearted effort to break up the pass and 97 was left all alone. And Mathews is known as a great defensive player .

People who didn’t grow up watching hockey night Canada actually thought Doc was good. Imagine that. He broadcast TV like it was radio. He had a nasally voice. I mean Dan Kelly was better

As a Devils fan, I liked Doc Emrick. Totally see why others don’t care for him though.

2012 Eastern Conference Game 6 OT is an example - I love his call of Henrique’s goal…but it was absolutely a “radio” call.

Rick Jeanneret seems similarly polarizing - I loved him watching Sabres games as a kid, but he’s got a ton of detractors.

Cole was good announcer in his younger days. During the latter half he struggled to find coherency. But HNIC has often put some terrible announcers on the air. Chris "Squints" Cuthbert sounds like every time somebody does something it's the first time he's ever seen it. Listening to Harnarayan Singh is like drinking warm milk. Gallivan and Dick Irvin were god-awful Montreal cheerleaders. Brian MacFarlane, Gary Dornhoffer, George Strombolopoulos was a disaster. And then of course the ultimate Clown Prince and his water boy, Don Cherry and Ron Maclean.

What was most egregious was sitting Kyle Connor knowing Tkachuck was a shell of himself and unlikely to give you much .

What happened to Jim Hughson ?

The Binnington hate posts aged so well in this thread. Chef’s kiss.

Did he play poorly in the first game vs the US? Yes, he ABSOLUTELY did. Frankly he’s the reason they lost, outside of him Canada looked to be the better team. So is it a shock when the weak link on a team plays well that the team wins? No - it is NOT a shock.

The reason you think the Bennington posts “didn’t age well” is because you seem to think a post about ONE GAME is a comment which applies universally. Stop being a clown.

Even goaltenders of compelling mediocrity can get hot, achieving a level of success that belies their reality. Sooner or later they regress to the mean. Tim Thomas, Dwayne Roloson, for example; more recently there's Alexandar Georgiev, Artūrs Šilovs, Aidan Hill, Robin Lehner, Ben Bishop, etc. Binnington was hotter than a firecracker the year St Louis won the Cup, and he was a huge reason they won. But otherwise he's been a B to B+. The reason the Canadian team played him is because there's a serious dearth of good Canadian goalies in the NHL right now. Personally I think in a short series like that Marc Andre Fleury might have been a better call. And I have no idea why Logan Thompson was passed over.

Don Whitman was solid

A friend of mine worked at CBC, where he was known as Don Witless.
Yeah . Don’t think you have to be a genius to be good at play by play . In fact being dumb might help

After listening to some NHL former players , Fox’s initial mess up Lead to the Matthews debacle
