2024-25 Portal

Based on two years of evidence, I don't believe these coaches can identify and land the players they need to play the style of basketball they promised. Also, I think they lack the ability to teach any players to play the style they promised. I hope they prove me wrong next year.
Then they shouldn't be here, but they got another year from JW.

Eh, some of these things were known. JJ and Bell haven't played defense in their career and no one should have expected otherwise. Red even said that they planned on outscoring teams. Bell is shooting about as well as he did last season, but he can't stay on the floor because his defense is non-existent and he doesn't do much more on offense to make others better. Westry hadn't played in two seasons for various reasons and counting on him to do more than a few spot minutes would have been foolish. Naheem is a senior and has averaged 11 minutes per game in his career. Freeman is a frosh and its hard to rely on them to be a key component to any team.

The roster was flawed from the get-go and Red didn't bring in any difference makers.
Even with every thing you said being true, a lot of ills are cured of any two of the five things happen would have made a huge difference. A top notch transfer PG or Freemen being healthy and the top freshman we thought would be would have been huge difference makers.

Bell playing well, McLeod had all world rate stats coming into the season… Was he ignored or injured? Westry being relied on, was that entirely a fan construct? Did the staff know all along he couldn’t play, or did they count on him to no avail?

I’ve said it a few times, the staff knows more than us, but they don’t know everything. We don’t know exactly what was their mistake vs. bad luck.

We know for certain that Starling and Freeman’s injuries weren’t expected… nothing a coach can do except recruit good depth. That is what they did, they got veteran stars from lower level programs. Those guys weren’t expected to be starters.

To try to get back on this thread’s topic… I don’t think this years transfer strategy was a bad one. Solid veteran depth moving up a level, and Two solid starters from the portal, and they would have been golden. If we had Richmond, Mack or even Leffew out there instead of Carlos, our win/loss record is probably reversed, and that’s just one of the Five things I pointed out that might not really have been in the control of the staff.

Their strategy for next year probably should be the same. Their implementation of that strategy was undesirable at best.

And that is completely separate from in game coaching, which has been very hard to watch this season.

Brown and Girard aren’t good enough though.

Whoops.
Just trying to get ahead of the sure-to-happen discussion about how the *only* P5 players available will be guys who weren't good for their teams.

I can feel it coming on, like a bad cold.

Also, we should not be targeting P5 “washouts”. We should get strong, accomplished P5 starters.

You know, guys like Jesse Edwards, Joe Girard and Malik Brown.
The not-particularly-charitable read is that teams higher in the CBB pecking order are cherry-picking our best players, while we are left taking players (McCloud from Florida State, Cuffe from Kansas, Taylor from Wake) who were shown the door.

I know it’s more complex and relationship-driven than that, but it wasn’t long ago that we were on the cusp of being considered a blue blood and in the blink of an eye, we’re all here hoping that some 30-year-old scout with a magic algorithm can identify a high-ceiling freshman from Fairleigh Dickinson because our current coach keeps recruiting players who can’t shoot, defend, or run an offensive set

I think its more the staff being caught flat footed and not recognizing which players are valuable in this current environment. Hopefully this is something that Kline can help with. Top-20 programs aren't targeting volume shooting combo guards who don't play defense and can't shoot. Every team is looking for a top-flight center that's shown they can play in high D1 and 3 and D guards/wings. Kind of pro sports teams, programs need to figure out which players are the rarest combination of skills and size who provide the most value and target them. Then sort out what you feel you can compromise (e.g, players like Flagg are highly sought after) to be able to acquire them.

The CBB pecking order has changed and its infuriating and yea teams have basically jumped the line. We pretty much saw the SEC and ACC flip flop overnight with the talent.

I like to cruise the reddit cbb threads to see some of the comments from these new SEC fanbases that all the sudden find themselves at the top of the college hoops world. Let's just use Auburn and Alabama but you could add any of the 6-8 other SEC teams that found themselves with 20+ wins and a pile of Q1 win and will be in the tourney.

It's shocking that they are complaining about the same things we're complaining about only they are paying 15 mil for a coach, have a 15 million dollar roster, along with an administration that supports their sports programs without question and also the big donors that will just drop a bag of cash without any drama or even knowing their name.

Every time they lose or they drop a seed line in the Lunardi projections they're complaining about how college hoops isn't fair for them or some other team has an advantage over them cuz they have more money or how they wish they got better portal players or coaches. These are programs that most of their fanbase didn't even know where their basketball games were played not too many years ago. I'm not even sure they put their games on tv and now all the sudden they're the biggest games of the year.

I just want to smack them over the head with a hammer and say you have no idea what's going on with the programs that used to be you before everything changed in college hoops.

Cuse along with alot of other places just didn't think they would get crushed as bad as they did. We can all say we should've seen it coming and planned ahead but I don't know how much it would've mattered sometimes or if we could've stopped the SEC or BIG from doing what they did.

6'1 160 pounds!? No way!!! Did we learn nothing this year
If we need a solid, veteran point guard for next year (which I think everyone on this board agrees that we do), why would you want to immediately rule out a guy who posted the #2 Assist Rate in all of D-1 (!) and who shot 38% (57-151) from 3-pt range this year? Maybe we end up finding somebody better, but an immediate "No way!!!" sounds a bit foolish to me.

He's one of the worst defenders on a team that got blown out repeatedly. He'll fit right in.
Thank you. I feel like I'm taking crazy pills here. A 160 pound Pepperdine Junior.

Carlos looks like a boy among men trying to get around screens, finish at the rim and defend at the ACC level and has 20 pounds on this guy.
