2024-25 Portal

He's one of the worst defenders on a team that got blown out repeatedly. He'll fit right in.

Yeah I’ll pass on guys with big numbers for really bad teams. I’m sure there are examples of it working out but someone else can take that gamble.

He kind of reminds me of Jason Sudekis from SNL's "What's Up With That?" skit.

If we need a solid, veteran point guard for next year (which I think everyone on this board agrees that we do), why would you want to immediately rule out a guy who posted the #2 Assist Rate in all of D-1 (!) and who shot 38% (57-151) from 3-pt range this year? Maybe we end up finding somebody better, but an immediate "No way!!!" sounds a bit foolish to me.
We don't need a minny guard, if they say 6-1 probably a few inches shorter, no thanks. Need a point guard at least a true 6-3 or bigger.

eh thinking in absolutes like this isn't wise

I’m not local. Just wondering what the rumors are about Freeman? Is he returning or going into the portal?
My understanding of Bulldog's recent post was NBA or SU, but with the caveat that it can always change.

Based on two years of evidence, I don't believe these coaches can identify and land the players they need to play the style of basketball they promised. Also, I think they lack the ability to teach any players to play the style they promised. I hope they prove me wrong next year.
Do you think they landed their first choice every time in the portal. No. The landing of the players is the difficult thing. The SU brand was tarnished by the time JB left. It is unclear if Red is the guy to bring back the shine. Freeman, Choppa, White, Anthony, and the Aussie guard seem to indicate he can identify and land very good talent.
The play of the team the last few games has been encouraging. I think there could have been some better use of timeouts to stop some runs, but I liked the zone with McCloud. Another thing I like is the kids have (seemingly) played much harder that the early part of the season. That tells me that Red hasn't lost them, despite all of the outside noise.
I think a good to great portal, 20 plus wins, and the NCAA are musts next year (odd things like another major injury to an important player.

At the same time, better usage of players has taken way too long. This team has played well enough in halves to suspect that it should be a .500 team... and should have been dominating the early season opponents (Lemoyne, etc.).

Yup. I think (from the comfort of my living room) there was too much adherence to everyone plays, especially with a whole bunch of new parts. The smaller rotation, by necessity, has helped with more consistent play. Bringing in the 2nd group, almost as its own unit, has helped as well, IMO.

SMU clearly knows the type of players they want and struck quick

Now that our season is officially over we should be doing the same

And they still aren’t anywhere near the bubble. That’s how much we have to improve. A terrible loss in the OOC to Butler and a loss against the 9th place team in the SEC in Mississippi State.

JJ with 16 points on 17 shots including 9 points from behind the arc. So he scored 7 points on 9 2pt FG attempts. Jyare somehow with zero rebounds or assists. Bell with 7 pts on 6 attempts and zero rebounds. He had a beaut where he got caught watching the shot and Cross just stepped in front of him for the board and put back.

So our roster makeup for next year is likely this, if Donnie and JJ return?

PG - JJ / Moore / Cuffe
SG - Kiyan / Fennell / Westry
SF - Womack
PF - Donnie / Sadiq / Petar
C -

Potentially could remove all three from PG spot, Westry from SG, and Donnie from PF.

Hopefully the coffers are full because we are going to need to bring in four guys minimum.

At least one pure PG, two C, and a PF

We have really poor roster balance.

Am I missing anything?

Edit - based off response below, updated.

Freeman isn't coming back, Moore is not a PG nor is he coming back. Sadiq is a PF like Grant. Anything other than putbacks or dunks are bonus on offense.

I wouldn't be surprised if Petar and Cuffe are the only returnees.
