I was at the Caps practice rink on Sunday watching my granddaughters travel game. Watched the goal on my phone. They updated the “goals to go” sign immediately. And they unboxed tons of new merchandise in the team store

And with Toronto losing tonight the Caps only need at most 2 more points to clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference. In all likelihood they will play either Montreal or Ottawa in the first round. They are 3 points behind Winnipeg for the President's trophy with 1 game in hand.

Ovi scores goal #896 in a Caps' loss at home last night to Columbus. The new NHL record (as each regular season Ovi goal will be). This time he adds another goalie to the list he's scored on. The Caps are 3-6-1 in their last 10 games. Last regular season game is Thursday night in Pittsburgh. Last 2 games Tuesday & Thursday are on ESPN. Playoffs start Saturday.

His current contract goes thru next season. Ted Leonsis, the Caps' owner, I think expects he'll play next season, but some have wondered if he will. I don't believe Ovi's given any indication either way.

Thanks, really appreciate it. I'm not following the NHL heavily (despite now having Utah Hockey Club nearby) but obviously it's been fun seeing updates about the goal chase. It'll be interesting to see how much distance he puts between himself and Gretzky.

It sounds like from this that he'll at least play next year, and maybe longer. As one of the announcers on a national TV broadcast said last week: no one has ever retired after scoring 42 goals in a year.
