Now he's going for 900! Important game Thursday. A win for the Caps clinches the division (I think unless Carolina loses before then). My friends are bummed, as they have tickets to the next game. Oh well!
Congrats Ovi !!
Thanks. I think Ovi also leads in overtime goals and maybe in game winning goals (I think I saw he just passed Jaomir Jagr in that last Friday night). He also scored his 895 goals in the exact same number games Gretzky scored his 894 in. Of course Gretzky has more assists than anyone else has pointsSome interesting stats I saw when comparing Gretzky and Ovechkin goal totals:
Shots on Goal
Ovechkin - 6852 (All-Time Leader)
Gretzky - 5088 (8th All-Time)
Short Handed
Ovechkin - 5 (826th All-Time)
Gretzky - 73 (All-Time Leader)
Even Strength
Ovechkin - 565 (3rd All-Time)
Gretzky - 617 (All-Time Leader)
Power Play
Ovechkin - 325 (All-Time Leader)
Gretzky - 204 (18th All-Time)

With Carolina losing in Buffalo tonight, the Caps have clinched the Metro Division. And with Toronto losing tonight the Caps only need at most 2 more points to clinch the top seed in the Eastern Conference. In all likelihood they will play either Montreal or Ottawa in the first round. They are 3 points behind Winnipeg for the President's trophy with 1 game in hand.
His current contract goes thru next season. Ted Leonsis, the Caps' owner, I think expects he'll play next season, but some have wondered if he will. I don't believe Ovi's given any indication either way.Is Ovechkin planning on playing next season?
Thanks, really appreciate it. I'm not following the NHL heavily (despite now having Utah Hockey Club nearby) but obviously it's been fun seeing updates about the goal chase. It'll be interesting to see how much distance he puts between himself and Gretzky. His current contract goes thru next season. It sounds like from this that he'll at least play next year, and maybe longer. As one of the announcers on a national TV broadcast said last week: no one has ever retired after scoring 42 goals in a year.Is Ovechkin planning on playing next season?
