Spallina had lots of good games against good teams. I think the idea that he doesn't do well against top teams is carryover from last year.
In the regular season:
four points vs Maryland
four points vs Harvard
five points vs Hopkins
five points vs Notre Dame
five points vs Duke
five points vs Nort Carolina
seven points combined in two ACC tournament games
That's pretty good. He had some clunkers (UVA and Cornell combined two points), but other than that he was productive, even in defeat.
All those are other players are very good, and I don't want to take anything away from them, but Spallina has put together a very good season against very opponents.
Did he have inflated stats against some lesser teams? Yes, but he's not alone there. Chris Kav put nine points vs Cleveland State. Jackson Eichner put up 23 combined vs Mercer, Lafayette and Holy Cross. CJ Kirst had 12 vs Hobart. Sam King had nine vs Marquette. Mackesy is the only guy who didn't do something like that, but he scored only three combined points vs Cornell in two games.
Chris Kav put up six more shots than Spallina in four fewer games, and produced just four extra goals. Spallina nearly doubles him in assists (54 to 27). Plus Spallina's team beat him twice. I don't really see the argument for Kav over Spallina. Jackson Eichner had a great season, but shouldn't strength of schedule play some sort or role? I also think he should have made it over King and Mackesy. I know I am biased but I'm not sure what else he needed to do.
