Their D was awful this year.I’m hearing Greg Schiano is about to get canned at Rutgers. If that happens Fran should be on the phone yesterday. People forget how damn good Schiano has been as a defensive coordinator. At Miami he built a unit that ranked top 5 nationally and laid the foundation for their 2001 national title run. At Ohio State his defense in 2016 finished top 5 in scoring defense and churned out NFL studs like Marshon Lattimore, Malik Hooker, and Denzel Ward. Even at Rutgers, fighting uphill in the Big Ten his defenses punched above their weight. In 2023 they were top 25 nationally in total defense despite nowhere near the talent of the rest of the Big 10. That’s not hype that’s production.
Schiano’s New Jersey ties are unmatched. He owns that pipeline. He’s been pulling tough, gritty Jersey kids for decades, and we used to thrive on that exact DNA. Lately those players have been slipping to Penn State, Rutgers, and ACC rivals. Drop Schiano in as DC, pair it with the current staff's ties, and suddenly Syracuse owns Jersey again.
Schiano is fiery, detail‑obsessed, and demands accountability. He’ll rip into players for sloppy tackling and have them playing like their hair’s on fire the next snap. Syracuse’s defense has been soft, undisciplined and flat out embarrassing. You drop Schiano in and suddenly you’ve got a unit that plays with edge, swagger, and physicality.
TL/DR: if Rutgers cuts Schiano loose, we should pounce. Proven defensive mind, proven recruiter, and the Jersey ties that plug directly into Syracuse’s DNA. If Fran wants to stop the bleeding and actually build a defense that doesn’t get torched every Saturday, Schiano is the guy. Enough excuses. Bring in a proven Jersey grinder who knows how to win.
I would take him as a coordinator. He could be of immense use for Fran's development and could address many weaknesses on the staff.
Mark Stoops would be a grand slam.No it’ll be better than Don. Not sure he can be a full time DC anymore. He’s up there in age. He just likes to get out of the house.
Myth? The guy was named the #1 recruiter just a few years ago, was he not? Do you think he's not recruiting anymore? But how do we know this? This seems more like myth than fact.
Aside from Diggs what studs has ERob brought in?Myth? The guy was named the #1 recruiter just a few years ago, was he not? Do you think he's not recruiting anymore?
Their D was awful this year.
He is under contract through 2030.
He’s walking into the sec as a DC $I guess I'll randomly stump for Al Golden. Would make a good DC/LB coach. Did really well at Notre Dame in the same role and obviously has not done well in NFL.
Of course NJ roots.
I thought Fran owned Jersey? Did he sell it to Schiano? Maybe traded it for a helicopter ride?I’m hearing Greg Schiano is about to get canned at Rutgers. Dale Williams. Never take pride in somebody’s firing but thank goodness (respectfully)
Williams is a good coach! He was the scape goat for the offense. Firing him is pretty much saying he is responsible for entire offensive failures. Come on! Let’s be real! Never “Great” when a coach’s is fired! Why is Dale being canned not great? SUfootball ?
He doesn’t. The very best have not come to SU.I thought Fran owned Jersey? Did he sell it to Schiano? Maybe traded it for a helicopter ride?
The OL couldn’t block or open holes in the run game it was on the coach. He had some great talent on the OL and couldn’t do anything with it.Williams is a good coach! You left out the injuries! And it takes more than a year to develop freshman that were playing! But hey you have all the answers! SMH!The OL couldn’t block or open holes in the run game it was on the coach. He had some great talent on the OL and couldn’t do anything with it.
At Purdue he was know for pass not run blocking. We say similar issues here and then the pass blocking went down hill. You left out the injuries! And it takes more than a year to develop freshman that were playing! But hey you have all the answers! SMH!
Dale, you’ll land on your feet. Take a deep breath. You left out the injuries! And it takes more than a year to develop freshman that were playing! But hey you have all the answers! SMH!
Syracuse’s overall pass-blocking grade was 55.9, the third-worst in the ACC. Its run-blocking grade of 56.1 ranked 53rd of 68 Power Four teams. And if it’s about developing players then entire offensive staff should have been gone. Cant throw, cant catch ETC….
we also went bargain shopping for an OL coach last time because we spent more on coordinators. Dale was probably one of the lowest paid P4 OL coaches and we got what we paid for. My hope is we invest more heavily in such an important position.Syracuse’s overall pass-blocking grade was 55.9, the third-worst in the ACC. The Orange didn’t have a 100-yard rusher in any game this season. Its 123.2 rushing yards per game ranked 108th out of 136 FBS programs. Syracuse also allowed 3.08 sacks per game, which tied with Michigan State for 123rd in the country.
Yeah totally not the OL coaches fault at all.
Ouch, was worried that's what happened. Hopefully we learned we can not cheap out.we also went bargain shopping for an OL coach last time because we spent more on coordinators. It certainly seems that Fran learned that lesson. He also knows now what type of coach can better relate to the players on the line. Dale and the OL did not get along. I sit near where they are on the sideline and it got worse as the year went on.Ouch, was worried that's what happened. Hopefully we learned we can not cheap out.
Agree. Time to give Robinson and Nixon pay cuts and reallocate the money. If they don’t want to take less money then they can move on. They both owe a refund from this season.
