strange list in a couple ways. more than one guy that wasn't on the 32-to-cut-down list just a month ago.

and 5? poles? for a several week tournament? just one goes down, you have all 4 attempting to play every second on d if they can even do that, you don't get another injury, penalty, yada. they're likely to be throwing a pole in a shorties' hands.
weird the infatuation with attackmen these days. they have plenty of spots.

While it doesn't make a lot of difference, I tend to think of Hunter Aquino as a midfielder.

they have 5 poles!!!
They still have 2 alternate players on the roster. Counting Aquino as a midfielder, we have
2 FO, 2 G, 5 D, 9 M, 6 A
The 2 alternate players will probably be an A and an M, giving for the final 22
2 FO, 2 G, 5 D, 8 M, 5 A

zack, it's possible you're not understanding my point and are stuck on another one.

they have 5 poles. i dunno, but i'm gonna guess that has never happened before at any level of international play for us.

it would be akin to having 7 total offensive players (call them mids or att or slashes) but worse because you can bury an extra guy or 2 on offense and they won't be getting attacked.

they're not going for a weekend. while in most of their games they'll be playing a lot of offense, they will still have to play some d throughout, and 1 or 2 teams will be more competitive than others.

one injury and immediately they don't have enough guys to play man down correctly for a penalty on a pole. then there's all 4 remaining poles have to take every single shift for whatever remains of the tournament. even with no injuries, there are essentially no breaks for the close d no matter what.

meanwhile, they will have at least 3 extra guys to play offense beyond 6. and 4 if they cut a ssdm. will it matter? probably not. could it? absolutely.

then again, the way these cuts and training camps and selections have been going, maybe they'll have 7 or 8 guys at pole by flight time, and they'll all be people that haven't shown up on any lists yet.

I do understand what you are saying but I can't really remember how many defensemen they got down to in the final 22 during the old U-19 days.
It appears that they want a strong group of ssdms

dating to 1999, never fewer than 6. the 2 cycles before that, can't tell for sure as there were at least that but they don't show hoo ended up being alternates.
caveat most of those years, 23 was the max (2022 was 22).
2008 they had 6 listed, but joel white listed as mid may have ended up playing lsm, so maybe 7?
1988 there were 7 (out of 22), but probably could have more longpoles on the field.

basically, always at least 6. not going through it, but i'd bet good money men's senior team is the same.

with 5 poles, they def should want a strong group of ssdms. because in all likelihood, they'll be out there instead of a pole.

the average heat index will also be 93°, fwiw, so likely half the time higher.

They definitely plan to just put a pole in a SSDM hands if there’s an injury. I feel like you do see that nowadays more. Coach must feel he wants 6 solid defenders (ssdms) out there and will take the risk on having another true pole on the roster to make room for more defensive midfielders. What’s Canada look like at the tournament? Maybe they’re midfield heavy and we’re strategically thinking ahead there too?

For those interested. Dan points out in a later tweet notable names left off -

Hunter Aquino, Benn Johnston (pretty sure he took himself off the team), Chase Cellucci, Nikolas Menendez, Peter Buonnano and Brady Pokorny
