2026 QB Situation

Spot on, now stop making sense.

These Angeli injury posts makes it sound like Odom will be QB1 for spring practices. If Odom is that good, it might even be difficult for Steve to regain #1 status if he isnt fully ready to go until late summer.

Odom and the Gtown transfer will likely get the lion shares of the spring reps. Angeli is out injured, the freshman isn't on campus and Filardi won't be with the team in the spring.

Don't rule out a freshman. How many games have you watched in your life, where a freshman had to come in and ended up being better than the starter? And then became the starter. Not saying that this QB is that guy, but who knows.

Honestly who the hell wants to come in being QB3?
It's almost an impossible sell.
Not really. I'll do it.

Look, I'm retired, I go to the gym 6 days a week, and I go skiing once a week.

Give me NIL$ and pay for my relocation. Being QB3 means I am unlikely to ever get in a game. No need to worry about a DL killing me. And believe me, that is a real concern.

So many advantages from my standpoint. I am on the team. That's #1. If something strange happens and they need me go in, I play "good teammate" and give that job to the guy behind me. To be fair though, there isn't likely to be anybody behind me and if there is, the QB room is screwed. That should be a real flashing red light. But for the sake of argument, let's forget all that and focus on my needs, shall we?

I get to use the team gym and Syracuse has better skiing than Michigan. So many advantages. Plus, I get to hang around on campus, visit relatives and friends, maybe teach a class or two. Non tenure-track, of course. I keep hearing about DART, so I assume there is a great dart board in the locker room. That would be fun.

Now you might be saying "why would this be attractive to SU?" I can't think of a single reason, but PAcuse wasn't asking that question, was he? He only asked who would want to be QB#3.

And the answer is me.

Fran, if you are reading this...and you KNOW you are...just go to the alumni office and get my cell #. Give me a call and we can discuss NIL$...I mean, "this outstanding opportunity for you to bring in a solid QB#3 and get this squad back to national prominence, etc etc etc"

Do you have any eligability left???

Do you have any eligability left???
I must have because I never used any of it when was an an undergrad or grad student at SU.

Look, I was born in what was then Memorial Hospital, a short walk ( in this case, because I was a baby, a crawl) to the campus.

I was meant to play for SU, but at the same time, so far down the depth chart that I couldn’t lose any games for us or get ridiculed by the people on this board. I know you guys too well, and we both know you would do that.

I 100% agree with this. You need a good viable back up. Syracuse isn’t going to waste NIL dry powder paying a 3rd string QB and no QB worthy of playing time is going to come to Syracuse to sit and just cash a small check. Those types want to play and they only have so much time. The 3rd stringer is always going to be a wildcard or a true freshman.

I have been so confused why we would ever pay a 3rd string QB. The problem last year is and always was that the staff 100% whiffed on Rickie Collins nothing more nothing less.

I do get why, given our QB health history, that people are so interested in who QB3 will be.

But good players don't want to come here to be QB3. Kinda surprised that we even got a solid QB2 who left an FBS starting job. But money is money.

I had said I would have been happy if Rickie stuck around for that role and developed further. I only said it because it took him so long to announce his portal entry, I thought he would have been the first.

I agree that the true freshman (or plural if you can pull it off) will be the 3rd string most years going forward.

Which makes sense, never heard of a full recovery from this type of injury in 6 months
I had a minor achilles strain that took about 13 months to fully heal. There's just only so much you can do, though I imagine he's getting much more aggressive care than I opted for.

yea the difference between professional rehab and personal is massive. we made sure he got the very best surgeon in the country and have prioritized his rehab. If he doesn't recover well, you can't blame what we're doing.

He's also a high level athlete in peak physical condition, and this may be surprising to learn, but I'm not. And even an injury like an Achilles, that has to matter.

With the Angeli situation, before the portal opening up I also had my doubts in what we could bring in if we were looking for 2 more QB's to compete. I didn't want to say anything negative in the recruiting threads as I certainly would not want to effect any recruits decision negatively. But from Fran's comments and the talent leve of the QB's we were bringing in, and it still seemed like we were involved with them after Odom's signing, my hopes were a little higher at that point. My disappointment is more in regards to what it seemed like was going on and who we may get as a 3rd option and QB.

But like I said, if we surely consider Lauter to be just QB3 or so, I think it all makes sense. And while its possible Lott could play if needed and be serviceable , any dependence on a true freshman QB is not something we should count on at all. So I don't want to even consider Lott as QB3 at this point considering any possible uncertainty of Angeli's health. We saw why this past season. My uneasiness is if Angeli isn't ready to go. I'm not a doctor and I didn't even stay in a holiday in last night. So i'm not sure what the likelihood of him being ready in the weeks before the start of the season. is it maybe 90%? I don't know. I'm just saying there is some chance he isn't ready and then I'm a little nervous. Now maybe if others are saying he is looking good so far maybe that raises the likelihood a lot? For the instances where athletes are not ready in 10 months or so, maybe that slow progress presents itself at this time. If that is the case, then awesome.

If Angeli is ready to go, I think Odom will certainly be better than Rickie, so that is a great start.

Serviceable is a massive upgrade over our QB situation last year. So I'll take it!

Another scenario is that Odom does so well we roll with him deeper into 2026. Angeli could be "ready," but also in a position that there is no need to play him in September if not 100% necessary. Is there a scenario where Angeli gets to redshirt for 2025 and 2026?
