2026 Winter Olympics: Milan-Cortina

Apparently there have also been some significant delays to date for the construction of the hockey arena for the Olympics -- it has yet to start apparently.

Could be quite the mess.

It does make you think though whether the Olympic venues / the use of multiple locations & cities/countries can be re-imagined into something logical. Asking one city to take on this burden seems to limit things at times.

Wow! Cortina used to be one of the prime bobsled venues on the Wide World of Sports. The Wiki for Eugenio Monti, the driver of Italia #1 and always on WWS, says that the bobsled events weren't held in Squaw Valley due to "economic reasons (for the only time in the history of the Winter Olympic Games)."

there were many reason of the Squaw valley debacle..

One was the timing back then of only announcing 4+ yrs out.
The US was actually pretty good in those sliding events up until then and after that it was many years before we medaled again.
But really it was money and the fact the Olympic committee didnt think many countries would send sleds to the US to run so they removed it and nothing was ever built.

I mean they also did remove the running deer shooting from the 1960 Olympics.. Who remembers that?

They were just in Italy 20 years ago.

What happened to all the facilities in Turin?
A lot of previous winter olympic sites are not longer suitable due to global warming.

Posted 2+ years ago and it looks like they just got it playable and open to public. But nowhere near full specifications.

My 11 year old daughter who is not a sports fan at all got hooked on skiing last winter. She got up this morning and turned on the downhill racing training runs (which I didn’t know would be on, so she figured it out on her own). Apparently I will be watching a lot of skiing events this week.

Just finished watching the Miracle documentary on Netflix. What a powerful show and a great preamble to the Olympics.

There were a lot of great moments in that documentary - but to me the best one was when they showed the video to Dave Christian of his mother and sister starting the USA cheers before the hockey game vs the USSR. In about three seconds you can see in his facial expression as he went through about 12 emotions.

A close second would be seeing Steve Janaszak story about his Olympic experience.
