2026 Winter Olympics: Milan-Cortina

here's a little tidbit. which NCAA school has the 5th most athletes participating in the Olympics? yep. that major university up north from here. CLARKSON. GO GOLDEN KNIGHTS. 10 btw.
Yeah, yeah. 10 of them are hockey players and only one is on the American team.

It is actually 11. I miscounted. 10 hockey players representing 6 countries and one alpine skier. One female hockey player and the skier are representing USA. 3 hockey players represent Canada.

Interesting note is he was a skier but is competing in men’s skeleton this time.

I’ve often wondered how these people get into those type of sports. I mean I know exactly zero people that have ever done either of those events or even thought about doing those events. How many skeleton or luge tracks are there in the United States?Do they have junior luge tracks or travel skeleton clubs? If Junior says ‘Dad I want to be the next great Luger” where would a guy start?

Lake Placid. We know a kid from here who did luge for a while. That’s where he trained.

When you were a kid how did you go down a snowy hill on a sled? I can at least understand skeleton.

Skeleton you are laying on the sled on your stomach and go down the track head first. Luge you are laying on your back on a sled and going down the track feet first. Both are nuts.
If you've ever gone kayaking or canoeing with rapids, they tell you to go feet first if you get capsized. Although both are nuts, I imagine the same holds true of luge vs skeleton. If they get tossed from the sled, it must be "good luck - you chose skeleton when you were a kid!" and pray to the Olympic gods for mercy.

Cause I've watched both and no way I would choose skeleton! As you said, nuts.

Meanwhile, I think the last person to lose their life in either sport in the Olympics was an athlete from Kazakhstan in the luge preliminaries a few years ago. Very tragic.
