24 Team CFP?

4 was perfect
I'd be perfectly happy going back to the 1980's, small/compact conferences, bowl games with history and luster, and no tournament to determine a single champion, with all the chaos that could entail. And have everything done on January 1 for heaven's sake.

To me it feels like adopting a playoff was a cheap attempt to make football like hoops... which is a step down IMO.

I hate the idea of expanding to 24. I don’t want to ruin the sacred college football regular season by 8-4 teams making the cut. I see 12 as a sweet spot.

But the system in the 1980s was terrible also. Split national champions, 1 and 2 often not being able to play each other due to Rose Bowl commitments, undefeated teams being left out, etc. Any system where a team can “claim” a championship is fundamentally stupid.

I do 100% agree with you that the smaller conferences with regional identity was way better.

Nah. 4 wasn't really a playoff. It was a bloated BCS. I'd also be ok with 8. What I really want is smaller conferences that aren't geographically idiotic. Give me those and get rid of the dumb conference championship games, and 16 makes sense. The first round takes the place of the conference championship games.

16 works. No bye’s, all first round games on campus. The Big 10 douchenozzles are insisting on it going to 24 after a few years and that is screwing things up
It adds a full 4 games to the season. That’s an extra 33% more games. I get most of the players now are paid and many a lot on the teams that would be competing but that’s a lot of extra mileage on the body before they even enter REAL pro ball.

They need to do away with conference games if they are planning to expand.

It's no more than what we already have for teams that don't get byes. Miami played 4 games in the playoff this year.
